That song brings up a question. My memory is cloudy after all these years, but didn’t Levon act in a movie about a short line railroad going out of business? Wasn’t he a locomotive engineer in the film?

Abnak Records was founded in Dallas by insurance mogul John Abdnor as a vanity project for his son John Jr., who had pretensions to musical talent. Abnak had one moneymaking group, the Five Americans, who had two hits in the mid-Sixties, “I See the Light” and “Western Union”. John Jr. was the “Jon” in Jon and Robin, who had the only other hit Abnak ever produced. This little ditty was the second success for Wayne Carson.

Jon & Robin: “Do it Again a Little Bit Slower”

John Jr. cut a fine figure in this early video, but he ended up in a mental hospital where he murdered a nurse. Life sometimes takes some strange twists.

Those two will get their chance to travel when their new hoomins come to take them to their furever homes. We’re keeping Monkey (the one on the right in the first pic) and have homes lined up for the remaining three.

Janis (the white/gray kitten in the duffel) and Morrison (the orange tabby) are going to a couple of my racing buddies, in fact.

It was time for Wayne Carson to intersect with Chips Moman, ring the cash register and achieve musical immortality.

In 1967, Dan Penn, songwriter of “I’m Your Puppet”, teamed with Chips and began looking for local bands to record. He hit pay dirt with the Box Tops.

Box Tops lead singer Alex Chilton was only 16 but had the voice of an old grizzled Negro blues singer. Chilton had his own distinguished lineage, for his father was a respected jazz sideman. Besides being a brilliant musician, Alex Chilton was wilful, pigheaded and a pain in the ass, which was to lead to a musically significant but financially ruinous career later on. Chilton enjoyed giving the finger to his fans.

Penn and Moman found a song for Chilton and his band, and so Wayne Carson hit the jackpot.

The Box Tops: “The Letter”

Note how Penn sets up Chilton with a mere two bar intro. He knows just how startling Chilton’s voice is, and he wants to give it maximum impact.

”The Letter” was recorded over the years by over a dozen artists, which made Wayne Carson a rich man. The most notable cover of this song was by Joe Cocker in 1970.
