About 100,000 women in Britain have undergone female genital mutilations, with some medics in the country offering to carry out the illegal procedure on girls as young as 10, it has been reported. The Sunday Times' investigators claim to have secretly filmed a doctor, dentist and alternative medicine practitioner who were allegedly willing to perform circumcisions or arrange for the operation to be carried out.

The practice, involving the surgical removal of external genitalia and in some cases the stitching of the vaginal opening, is illegal in Britain. It can invite up to 14-year-imprisonment, the Daily Mail reported.

It is also against the law to arrange female genital mutilation (FGM).

Known as "cutting", the procedure is traditionally carried out for cultural reasons and in Africa and with large numbers of immigration from countries like Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia, it is becoming more common in Britain.

It is believed to be proof of a girl's "purity" when she marries. The victims, however, often suffer in silence and are rarely given anaesthetic.

Research suggests anually up to 6,000 girls in London are at a risk of the potentially fatal procedure, and over 22,000 in Britain as a whole.

You're right, of course. But consider the degree of suffering that might be imposed by islam as opposed to any other religion.

And note too, that in conflict, a god based philosophy will always win-out over a secular one. Time though it may take, that seems the verdict of history. That's why the grounding of American Judeo-Christian ethics made the US what it...was at least. God only knows what will become of us all in the future. If people would do their research, the headline does NOT mean that in Britain, 100000 women are being mutilated. It means that 100000 women living in the UK have undergone this barbaric practice (which btw isnt exclusively Muslim).

NOR have 22000 UK females or 6000 London females actually undergone the practice. They are merely at risk because of their cultural background.

If you read other newspapers, youll see that 166 cases in London have been identified, so one would assume a figure of 200-300 in the UK as a whole.

That is 166+ too many, but that is a million miles from a figure of 100000. What the headline actually means is that 100000 women have suffered this obscenity in Africa, Asia or the ME, and have moved or fled here as immigrants of refugees.

As an American I have every right as every other citizen and even considered an equal to the head of state of my country. All are equal under the law with no inheritly special rights or privileges another citizen cannot attain with hard work or even luck.

Never am I expected to bow or curtsie to another citizen, not even to the highest official in the land. And even the president has to have a expected to pay taxes and have a passport, just like every other citizen..

Can you as a British "citizen" say the same?
