Do homophobic people actually fear their own unconscious feelings? A new study suggests that people who repress their own sexual attraction to the same sex are more likely to express hostility towards gays.
"In many cases these are people who are at war with themselves and they are turning this internal conflict outward," study co-author Dr. Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, said in a university written statement.
In four separate experiments conducted in the U.S. and in Germany, each involving an average of 160 college students, researchers attempted to measure any differences between what people say about their sexual orientation and how they actually react. Their findings are published in the April issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
For one experiment, researchers used word and picture tests to subliminally prime participants with either the word "me" or "others," and then asking them to place the words and images into "gay" or "straight" categories. A second experiment had participants browse same-sex or opposite-sex photos to test implicit - or unconscious - same-sex attraction. Other experiments measured participants' levels of homophobia through questionnaires or asked about participants' upbringings and their parents' perspectives.
All together, the study showed that participants with parents accepting of homosexuality were more open and aware of their implicit sexual orientation, while those with authoritative parents were more likely to deny their implicit sexual orientation. The researchers found participants who said they were heterosexual but revealed different reactions on their implicit tests were more likely to act with hostility toward gay people.
"In a predominately heterosexual society, 'know thyself' can be a challenge for many gay individuals. But in controlling and homophobic homes, embracing a minority sexual orientation can be terrifying," study co-author Dr. Netta Weinstein,

Hate the sin, love the sinner.
written by a HOMO no doubt.
That is a University sexuality expert to you. :)
They know people secretly want their sex, espeically when they tell to to get lost!
let’s see if I have this ‘logic’ straight...
unless I’m 100% on board with everything the homos do, I must be a homo?
yea, sure.. you betcha.
the only thing that ‘frightens’ me about homos is what I would do to them if they molested anyone in my family
I just don’t care. One of the guys I grew up with is a turd burglar. I still get along with him just fine but don’t care to hear about his preferences.
Yeah, OK. Makes perfect sense.
Ahhh, the liberal mind. Where up is really down. Down is really up.
True is false. False is true.
Left is right and right is left.
And now, gay is gay and straight is gay. And ambiguous is also gay.
Firstly, for the sake of discussion, let’s say that what the authors of the study are saying is true, that those whose parents are more domineering - this means, probably, that they have only tried to instill morals in their children, however imperfectly - are less likely to acknowledge their inclinations to homosexuality. Does anyone out there note that this actually makes sense when you think about it?
Secondly, let’s admit that it might even be true that there are people out there that feel some kind of temptation in regard to homosexuality, but don’t want to admit it. Again, this makes sense if you think about it.
The real news here is that this research is all being done in regard to matters of the Sixth Commandment, which concerns the proper framework for sexual relations versus other, improper frameworks. Or, to put it another way, valid and God-pleasing sex as opposed to that which He has condemned and forbidden. What if, instead, a great deal of research had been done vis-a-vis the Seventh Commandment, that is, “Thou shalt not steal.” What do you think would have been discovered? Are there people out there whose parents instilled in them the sense that stealing was wrong - in whatever form, and no matter how subtle, sneaky, and self-justifyingly it was explained! - who are tempted to be like those who steal in subtle, sneaky, and self-justifying ways? What do you think? Did the instruction of their parents make it hard for them to associate themselves in their mind with others who openly practice such things so that they took any even harder line toward such people? Duh!!!!!!!
I was just having a similar thought. Homophobia is magically the only revulsion to something that actually is a love response. Just like the logic they use when it gets cold it must be due to global warming or raising corporate taxes strengthens the economy.
The very concept is retarded.
I guess we execute murderers because we are jealous that they took action and we repress ourselves??
I won't ask if you won't tell.
These assclowns can’t figure out the difference between revulsion and genuine homophobia. Plenty of people dislike homosexuality for a large number of rational reasons.
Here's a little problem with homosexuality that you won't find reported in the media, and have hard time researching on the internet: Pedophiles are EXPONENTIALLY more likely to be homosexual. How do we know this? 27% of all women and 16% of all men report being the victims of some incident of sexual abuse as children. But women are far more likely than men to report this. So somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of all sexual abuse victims are boys. Meanwhile, virutally ALL sex crimes against children are committed by men. And just 2% of all men are gay. Do the math. Taking homosexual and hetrosexual males as seperate distinct groups, an extremely disproportionate group of all pedophiles are gay men.
I believe my conclusion here has more scientific basis than the "study" in this article.
I doubt REAL
mean men ever doubt THEIR manlineth.
I know I don't doubt mine, but I do doubt others at times.
Now if YOU feel that others MAKE you doubt YOUR manlineth...???
And Obama is just like Ronald Reagan. Nobody would believe that one if I made it up.
I bet the writer of this column hates roaches - maybe he just has this repressed sub-conscious thing for roaches.
“the only thing that frightens me about homos is what I would do to them if they molested anyone in my family”
Same here. Be real careful not to get any of their blood on you when beating the $hit out of them.
So heterophobia practed by militant, vile homosexuals really means they have opposite-sex attraction and it’s deep-seated and driving them crazy? That’s the logic this study would claim for heterosexuals also applied logically to homosexuals.
might not agree with you about intellectual property but on this we see eye to eye.
Haha...these guys never have an original thought, do they? Just keep repeating the same B.S., hoping to convince people through repetition.
Sad thing is, it works on a lot of people that aren’t paying attention.
“correction: not -phobia. -disdain.”
LOL! The title is enough. So my suppressed feelings for screwing some guy in the ass is my reason for not going along....These folks kill me.
***What the hell is homophobia? Phobia suggests fear of. Im not the least bit fearful of the disgusting freaks****
Disgust? Sounds like you have a case of (trumpets and flourishes please)....HOMOMISA, a disgust of homos. Some also have ISLAMOMISA, A disgust of Islam.
uh yeah, that’s the ticket.
Listen, when I was in the Army, a surgeon general came to give a talk and one of the asides was this: The human poop chute was designed as an exit, not an entrance.
Homosexuals give a lot of normal heteros the creeps. End of story.
Homophobia is like a gag reflex.
Homophobia is a misnomer, it’s not the fear of queers, but the revulsion of them.
It should be called homonausem.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.”
Studies like this have a political motivation.
According to this logic, you secretly desire to eat human flesh.......uh huh
“...Would that also explain the hostility of gays towards hetrosexuals?...”
It’s called herophobia.
Where are all the studies on heterophobia?
Funny thing is, there was a lot of speculation back in the 70's on the idea that the Nazis were all gay or repressed gays until the lavander mafia put the ix-nay on that.
I don’t hate homosexuals and I’m not afraid of homosexuals...I just feel better when they’re not around.
“Homophobia” is a made-up term meant to imply that there is something wrong with heterosexuals.
"You either .... .... or you do not .... ...., there is no in between."
I react negatively to *all* the psychiatric paraphilias.
Same sex attraction disorder.
They’re all the same mental disease, just with different objects of fixation.
Most of them have not [yet] been “delisted” by the shrinks.

I want the graphic of the guy with the headache and "Not this **** again"!
These people are mentally ill perverts so they see everyone else as mentally ill perverts. It's really quite simple.
Many of the Nazis were indeed homosexuals.
“The Pink Swastika” is an excellent and well researched book, a couple of places online. A simple search will find it.
"Disgust" works too.

Hmm, now it’s a link.
I believe it's the same with pedophiles. The very first girl I ever "fell in love" with was in the 6th. grade but so was I. My age preference for girls advanced as I did. Perverted minds are still stuck on that same age group that they were first attracted to.
I won't ask if you won't tell.
I hear the first step is just thinking about it. It's only a matter of time before you two are firing up the grill and swapping recipes.
