The suspected shoplifter who died after being shot during a scuffle with a loss-prevention officer inside the College Station Walmart was killed by his own handgun, College Station police revealed Saturday.

The man was identified by police as 47-year-old Michael Alan Bradshaw of Robertson County.

Bradshaw was pronounced dead at College Station Medical Center at about 8:15 p.m. Friday.

Police said Bradshaw had been detained by store personnel as he attempted to leave the Walmart with a shopping cart of stolen merchandise sometime around 4 p.m. Friday.

After being escorted to the store's loss-prevention office, Bradshaw began to struggle with employees and pulled a handgun from his pants pocket.

The gun discharged during the struggle and a round struck a filing cabinet before a loss-prevention officer was able to get control of Bradshaw's gun.

Bradshaw then pulled a knife, investigators determined, and began to approach the loss-prevention officer wielding the gun.

The employee shot Bradshaw once in his mid-section, police said.

The gunfire in the Walmart sent customers running for cover toward the back of the store, where employees directed them outside.

Police could not say what items Bradshaw was attempting to steal from the store.

According to Brazos County records, Bradshaw had been released from the Brazos County Jail on April 10. His confinement had lasted for 20 days because of two writs of commitment.

Although the record did not reflect the reason for Bradshaw's incarceration, writs of commitment can be issued for such infractions as failure to pay child support.

Bradshaw also had been charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana and a DWI in the 1990s.

The investigation of what police were calling an aggravated robbery was ongoing late Saturday.

Walmart closed its doors after the incident but reopened at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Business seemed to continue as usual as customers' cars filled the parking lot.

Just one more reason to be familiar with weapons from all over the world. You never know when you might have to take a weapon from a goblin and use it on them.

Especially if you work somewhere that you are not allowed to carry to defend yourself.

I would like to see a follow-up on this and see if the Wal-Mart employee suffers backlash.

I’ll never understand why people with knives think they stand a chance against someone with a gun pointed at them....

Bradshaw was white so the Wal-Mart and the College Station police won’t have Sharpton’s rent-a-mob showing up anytime soon.

Depends on color, age, party affiliation.

If the gun is already pointed and a round is chamvered, a knife is useless.

If either of those isn’t true, a properly wielded knife can easily be effective within 10 feet. EASILY.

How convenient and thoughtful - the thug provided his own pistol and ammo with which to be shot.

My lady friend is third in command of a security company, managing all security officers (armed and unarmed) as well as loss prevention officers in a multi-state area (southeastern U.S.).

Their LPO’s are unarmed....and have a VERY dangerous job. They are routinely getting into altercations with Obama’s ‘sons and daughters’ who just decide they had the right to take whatever they want, and by God no one can detain them.

It gets ugly far more often than you’d imagine.

I don’t understand why a private “loss prevention officer” has any right to detain anyone. Either call the real police, or I’d walk right out on them.

In 1974 I worked as a floorwalker for Sears while going to college. Lots of apprehensions and, while not in writing at the time, we were not allowed to frisk detainees. I did anyways and confiscated four pistols, five knives and a set of brass knuckles. Wouldn’t want the job now, too old. But Lord, was it fun.

I don’t understand why a private “loss prevention officer” has any right to detain anyone....You,as an LPO, are taking the place of the owner of the property,ie the company who hired you, so you have the right to protect that property and bring it back. Sort of like YOU can protect your house and use force to get back, or protect your property. F’ the “real police. they do NOT work for the stores. And I’d really try not to walk out on some the guys I’ve known, including myself.

Balony, a private store owner or their representitive has no right to detain anyone. If the accused demands the real police be called, they have to do it, or the accused is free to leave.

The cop’s are sometimes called and issue a summons. Sometimes the owner or his representative goes to the local court and files charges on his own. What is so hard to understand that the Bill of Rights says we are allowed the right of life , liberty and the pursuit of property (before it was changed)?
