FREEPER COMMENTS REQUESTED: Is it just me, or is Mary Matalin way off base today with her entire theme for the show (guest hosting for Rush). Now I normally like her work tremendously, but her idea that we should search for "virtue" in government and for "virtuous people" to be in government seems extremely naive.
The only virtue in government is its limit. We will never get a government full of virtuous people. By definition, government is power and virtuous people are not drawn to that. Our Founders knew that. This is why they insisted on LIMITED government. Wake up Mary!
I bet that’d do it. But damn, I quit drinking 15mos ago. Almost makes me want to go back to it. Nah; I just switched to another program.
If there is public virtue, there are no parasites. People have enough moral values to not abuse the system. People have to have a certain level of honesty and dignity with constrained government. No public virtue means no good judges, no good public officials to put common sense practices into place.
We have been sold out on all sides. The Rush show a Carville Matalin show now. I don’t turn on his show to hear two of the biggest frauds in the political business yuck it up.
If you were elected, the unemployment rate would increase
for a time, because you would..
1) Close the Department of Energy
2) Close the Dept. of Education
3) Close the EPA
4) Give illegals 60 days to leave.
5) No I.D. no vote.
6) Drill like no tomorrow
But in a year or 2, business would boom, and the debt shrink
And America would get real witty one liners !
SOL 2012 !!
” Carville is always mean, nasty, vicious, and dishonest.”
And those are his GOOD virtues...
” ROTFL.
I hope comeone sends her this thread.”
imarriedaserpent.com ?
Given who Matalin’s husband is, I’d say having one child who is conservative and one liberal is expected in that household.
Was she desperate? I am thinking, “yes”.
Well, I’d add Dr. Walter E. Williams to my “approved” guest host list. He usually has Thomas Sowell on, and it doesn’t get much better than that.
>> Whose next to host? <<
Newt may be in the market for a new gig soon. I’d love to listen to him on a daily basis. But I’ll bet Rush wouldn’t let him be a guest host, because Newt probably would outshine Mah Rushie too much!
Yes, we should hope to find virtue in government and we should encourage the virtuous to seek office. However, we should assume that anyone seeking political office has the morals of an alley cat. We should assume that they’re all scoundrels looking for a bribe or a piece of tail or both. We should never stop digging for dirt.
I’ll bet the RINOS did Cain in (not kidding)
Ann dated Bill Maher?
Please tell me it is another Ann you are referring to!
Desperate is a mild term......kinda like me marrying Rosie O’Donnell......uh oh......gulp......barf....bathroom please.
“We, the people” get duped over and over again by having our government and special interests in one concentrated are for most of their “reign”.
This is 21st century. Send ALL politicians back to their states and districts. Every last one of them. The give them “Skype,” “Go to my PC”, “Go to Meetings”, ability to teleconference.
Anything less than this is putting the government at peril and really shafting “we, the people...”
“Poor dear. In a book of just-missed-the-mark quotations. A limit on government is something that is antecedent to government. It is something the founders said lay in the people, that was expressed in the Declaration and the Constitution, and that the people should re-impose on government by whichever means are most appropriate when government, whether large or small, starts to trample their liberties.”
The horses done left the barn already, Clem!
Us stupid, simple engineering folk saw us some right wisdom without the $0.50 words and was sayin’ ‘Good on ya’!’
You lawyerin’ types keep settin’ the rest us of simple folk straight.
I feel so out of the loop - well, think I'll go run those young whippersnappers off my lawn and think about adopting lots of cats!
Your response proves you didn’t listen to the program, have no idea the point I was making, but you damned sure think of your self as righteous - but really its just naivete and self righteousness.
I’ve written in American Thinker several times about a virtual congress, keeping them in their districts. It is the future of our nation, if we are to have one.
Keep spreading the word.
You are a brick wall: I am tired of beating my head against it. You have yet to show any grasp, even the faintest grasp, of what is being discussed here today.
But you have no doubt made yourself feel superior. Congrats.
Yes, the Founders knew that the PEOPLE, not those in government, must be virtuous and they also knew that those in power would do what those in power always do - try to increase it - which is why they focused on the LIMITS of government and the VIRTUE OF THE PEOPLE NOT IN government.
Something you, and Mary Matalin, miss.
See 188 AND 139 - and get a clue about the conversation, and get off your high horse.
Mary Matalin is what you’d expect from a GOP-e insider.
Little surprise to hear her say that she grew up a liberal and ‘converted’ to being a conservative. There are a lot of this sort in the ‘conservative’ media whose instincts were Left. Medved and Krauthammer being two more.
No, the only incentive is to LIMIT what they can tax and what they can do - which means she MISSES the point and that I HAVE a point. Think about it.
I listened off and on this morning and I found no fault. I was disappointed Rush was not there, but she was not insufferable. And I thought it very realistic when she had her husband on (though he needs an interpreter) and he was explaining how well he and rush get along. I have a lot of liberal friends and relatives so I understand. He seems like a very loving husband, and I can think of a handful of conservatives that may have their politics together but not their families.
I don’t mind the exposure to others if rush has to be gone. My favorite by far is mark Steyn because he is brilliant and funny.
Perhaps Mrs. Rush, ‘Katherine’, had a role in the selection. Just who calls their wife ‘Katherine’ anyway?
We can, but not with some kind of naive nicey "pick the nice person" kind of unrealistic plea. We can ONLY limit the scums in government by taking away that which incents scum to run - which is money and power. Take that away, and the scum will go away on their own. THink about it. This is the genius of limited government and liberty - not some kind of Glenn Beck Mary Matalin special divination of who the angels are and are not.
I was commenting on your remarks, not the radio show.
AMEN and keep preaching it.
So what? I post occasionally on Beck threads, and I make it clear I don't like him. Are you such a fanboy that you get butthurt when folks do that? You post every day on Trayvon threads. That's a pattern I've noticed. And I couldn't care less. You shouldn't take dislike of Beck so personally, Chris. It's getting a little weird, this preoccupation with my posting habits.
" and no, I havent, Im listening to Glenn right now since Mary Matalin is so utterly boring."
Oh, okay. I recall you saying you were done with Beck, would never listen to him again, etc. Whatever. The heart of a true fan wins out in the end, I guess. :)
This is where a little info is dangerous. The Founders designed a government that would work well for virtuous people with a government populated by very few people with very little power because the Founders knew that power attracts those of little virtue. You have it wrong.
Is mark Davis the Texas one whose asides have asides? Drives me batty.
Made up example:
“Yesterday what Obama did, well, what I mean is what his Justice Department did, and when I think about the word justice, I guess what I really mean is that Holder doesn’t have the first inkling of knowledge about justice, I’m not sure he knows anything more about anything except race pimping, which is what we have going in the Trayvon case, have you seen the quote from the attorney?...”
NO NO NO NO NO - limited government can only occur when the population is both free and virtuous and they thereby limit the power of government. Your equation is government central and therefore NOT AT ALL NOT AT ALL NOT AT ALL what the Founders intended. WE, not THEY, have to keep them in CHECK because the Founders KNEW they would not.
The burden of virtue is on US, NOT the elected folks.
So you admit you were off subject? Thanks.
Little surprise to hear her say that she grew up a liberal and converted to being a conservative.
An awful lot of people fall when young for the liberal bs all around them. Don’t fault anyone for that. Especially when they get smart and become a conservative.
I became a Conservative when living off a government at 90% of my salary, staying home with my baby. It was just so wrong yet I did not refuse the money. Instead I became a conservative because now I got it. Taxes were sky high to pay for my luxury? Wrong wrong wrong.
Google is your friend, so is the search for truth. If you don't like the truth - well, that is your problem, isn't it?
As a matter of record, there were abundant stories about Benjamin Franklin's affairs with the 'ladies'. He, himself, often wrote those stories and promoted their distribution. Read, learn and stop calling people names. You look foolish.

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2522/whats-the-true-story-on-benjamin-franklin
It was rumored that he had several 'flings' while serving in Paris, as well as giving a friend of his a letter on advice in selecting a mistress.
Ben Franklin was a genius, an inspired leader among men .... but he was not pefect, he had his flaws - as do all men. You would do yourself a service to look up some facts on these founding fathers, rather than flame someone who has taken a bit of time to research them - as individuals.
For example, did you know that in the 1770's George Washington grew and wrote papers on how to grow marijuana? Some would argue that the crop was grown for it's hemp and as a soil 'stabilizer' however, that does not explain his papers on removing the male buds. Of course, at that point in time, this was perfectly legal, and there was a market for this crop (primarily rope and canvass), if you chose to believe he never smoked it, that is your priviledge; however naive it may be.

I tend to think a poster’s opinion about things is on-subject.
I believe you are right. On second thought and listening to the show as it went along, I believe it represented the start of the GOP presidential campaign. Starting on the basis that character counts, i.e. virtue is an excellent beginning. My initial reaction was premature and based on my repulsion of the corrupting meme of ‘can’t we all get along’. I realize it was not this at all. Well done Merry M.
Of course the burden is on us, but if we don’t put a virtuous person in power, nothing will happen.
That is why recognizing that virtue is important is... well, so important.
If we, as voters, don’t think that virtue in an elected official will lead to smaller government, then we will continue to discount the importance of virtue, and we will never get smaller government.
You can’t have smaller government until you have virtuous men in power.
That is the dumbest statement I’ve ever read!
My comments were clearly intended to take into context the radio show - very very clearly - actually being meaningless outside of the context of the radio show - and by your own admission, you don’t have any idea what was said on the show, which means you just admitted that your comments solely on my comments are meaningless.
I’m not exactly sure of his quote but the point he was making was typical Milton Friedman common sense. He of course was not arguing along the lines of instituting any form of tyranny as could be misunderstood. That’s certainly not a Milton Friedman trait.
My husband and myself took a trip to Ft Myers, Fla back in the Iran Contra hearings that were televised. (they always are if they think they will snag a pubbie).
My oldest son sat and watched them and was a huge Ollie North fan. That boy was raised right.
A few years later he went to Indiana University. They turned him into a lib. He isn’t as bad now as he was about 5 years ago. But indoctrination when they leave the nest happens.
Doesn’t make a person a failed parent. I love my boy, he is good to me and we get along. We just don’t talk politics without getting into a verbal battle. LOL
You post about Beck on non-beck threads i.e. this one, and yeah I can tell you don’t like him, and it’s apparently such a burden that you can’t keep it to yourself.
Yep, I post everyday on Trayvon threads, that’s a pattern I’ve noticed myself.
I don’t take your dislike of Beck personally, wonder what makes you think I do...and I’m not preoccupied with your posting habits, they just jump out at me because, well, they are weird.
I was definitely mad with him over his inability or refusal to see the game being played here. He, of all people, should have been able to see it, as he is the one who showed everyone else how the media manipulates.
Personally, I think he is so fearful of black riots that he is willing to toss a single person under the bus to avoid them, but I could be wrong on that, bcause he has changed his tune on Zimmerman from what I can hear, but he already did damage, and he should pay for it in a civil court IMO.
But yeah, I am a fan of Beck, so what? Dude has done a lot of good and has a lot of insight, certainly much more than say, you. And you can keep up your little smiley’s all day, you’re not bothering me at all with them. If it makes you smile to know that I am a fan and listener of Glenn’s, then smile away, because that is the case.

Really? LOL. Sounds to me like you have quite the vivid imagination.
I am sorry, but public virtue is a meaningless phrase. If it is anything it is only something that exists in an imaginary world.
It can and will never exist in the real world. Please understand that Government is force, nothing more, nothing less.
If government was the size that our Founders intended, we would hardly know it exists. Then, it would not matter if there were busy bodies or control freaks running it. They would not be able to do much damage.
As it is, the virtuous are in the process of controlling every d*mn aspect of our lives; from our toilets, to our light bulbs, to what we eat.
Please tell me virtuous public servants would go about drastically reducing the size of government??? It will NEVER happen.
Governments are, without a doubt, the most destruction institutions ever created by man.
The bigger a government becomes the more it becomes inhabited by utterly evil and sadistic people.
No I am afraid it’s the same Ann who at one point was dearly loved here on FR, where her articles drew hundreds of posts and calls for pics to be posted of her.
Now the admins have to delete some posts and she may get 50 posts.
Rush is too big to be pushed around by anyone - including Clear Channel. He has direct and sole control of the editorial content of his program. If his guest hosts are all spouting the pro-Romney line....well, it doesn't take an Einstein to figure out where Rush is on this election.
YEP
Sad deal.... Is anybody left with us ?
