With young adults not nearly as enthusiastic about pulling the lever for President Obama as they were in 2008 (as my colleague Nat noted recently), President Obama has seized on the impending hike of interest rates for subsidized Stafford student loans (they are slated to go from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent in July, if Congress does not intervene).
But Mitt Romney announced his support for an extension today, taking the air out of Obamas argument. Given the bleak job prospects that young Americans coming out of college face today, I encourage Congress to temporarily extend the current low rate on subsidized undergraduate Stafford loans, he said in a statement. I also hope the President and Congress can pass the extension responsibly, that offsets its cost in a way that doesnt harm the job prospects of young Americans.

Speaking of financing your college education. Here in North Carolina, one young man (age 15)impregnated his 18 year old neighbor and received free college funds from the federal government because....drum roll....”he is a single parent.”
I like that plan. Time to have a talk with my son.
That’s going to make it hard to balance the budget Mr. Olympic turnaround.
he could kill has parents an earn a bonus stipend for being an orphan.
Dictator Obama Nationalized the Student Loan Debt, which is larger than all Credit Card Debt, when Obama signed Obama”care” into law.
RINO “Obamalite” Romney needs to re-privatize this horrific taxpayer burden of debt, the first day that Romney is in office, AND end all future Student loans, financial aid to students, etc.
We cannot afford Obama or “Obamalite” Romney.
It is all about the money, our Grandchildren’s money.
Here is a question. Since the student loan government takeover was wrapped up in the Obamacare legislation, does that mean if the Supreme Court overturns Obamacare the student loan part is voided as well?
Really glad my family sacrificed in order for our two children to get through college so they could begin the rest of their lives debt free. Silly me, I should have had them load up on debt cuz da gubmint gonna pay. Seriously, I understand not every family can pay for college even if they plan and sacrifice but this bailing everyone out for choices they willingly make is getting old for us 53%rs. The well is running dry paying for my family and everyone elses.
Clearly our citizenry need to be better educated based on their choices lately.
However, they need to limit loans to curriculum that are in demand as evidenced by high post graduation placement rates and salaries. Shelling out $60,000 for a student to pursue a degree in stained glass only for them to end up shoveling hamburgers doesn't make sense.
Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble
Fire burn, and cauldron double.
Aren't we still working through the last subprime mess?
Tell the Children, here is how to fight educational costs:
State school over private school. There are many state schools that have equivalent or better programs than privates schools at 3 times the costs. Savings- $30K per year...
Big Division I schools may play in bowl games and the NCAA tournament, but smaller schools have manageable classroom sizes, professors that teach (opposed to Grad students) and are willing to offer scholarships to get students. Savings, up to $8K per year..
Don't buy books at the school book store. Savings, up to $1K per year
Get college credit in High School. Done correctly, one can easily start college as a sophomore. Savings $15K..
Take summer courses at your local community college. Savings is $2K to $8K.
Finally, work in College. Get a job so employers feel you have a work ethic instead of someone who spent spare time playing video games or posting on FACEBOOK.
Sad fact of the matter is, probably 60% of our electorate would be willing to vote for a candidate promising to cut them a break on their student loans.
And we know Obama is cooking up such a scheme for the fall.
Gotta stay competitive somehow. I have to pin this one on the electorate more than on Romney.
...or he could have said, “Yes, I am all for increasing the interest rates on student loans.”
And then we would have heard what a stupid move that was.
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
Frankly, this issue is miniscule compared to the loss of our credit rating under Obama, the $5T in debt accumulated, and the detrimental degeneration of our foreign policy...
Any Republican nominee would keep the interest rates for students low until students can find JOBS.
Frankly, Obama’s record at helping create an environment favorable for jobs for students blows...and that fact needs to be exploited by the Republican party.
Just like he did running against Ted Kennedy, he tries to out-liberal his opponent. And he loses.
Why doesn’t obama just sign an executive order and be done with it?
OK. All the Romney lovers on FR, please explain to me how it is that Mittens differs from Obama? Romney is the Mini Me to Obama’s Dr. Evil. No, don’t give me the nonsense that Mittens is “the only electable candidate”. He’s an Obama-clone.
That is exactly correct!
Government schools are not cheaper than private schools when the massive taxpayer subsidies are included. They are staffed from top to bottom with government hirelings, and they vote Democrat. We shouldn't let them get anywhere near our young.
