Man answers cell phone twice during local show, told off by famed "Star Wars" actress

A man learned the hard way that you don’t take a cell phone call when Princess Leia is preforming.

Carrie Fisher, who portrayed Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” movies, had her one-woman performance of “Wishful Drinking” interrupted twice (you read right, twice) Saturday at the Victoria Theatre by a cell phone user.

A man near the front row apparently couldn’t resist the urge to answer two calls.

Fisher laughed it off when the man answered the phone in the show’s first act, asking if his wife was in labor or something, Diane Schoeffler-Warren, a spokeswoman for the Victoria Association, said.

She was not in a laughing mood when he answered it again in the second act, Warren said.

The man left the theater with Fisher and her sharp tongue on his heels.

“She told him how rude he was,” Warren said. “She handled it with humor, but at the same time, she called him out.”

To Fisher’s apparent surprise, the man later returned to his seat, another audience member told me.

After the show, Fisher said that was the most disrespectful thing she’d ever experienced at a performance, Warren said.

Warren found the whole thing puzzling.

“It is so obnoxious that someone thinks they are so important that they have to answer their cell phone at a show that other people paid to see and that they paid to see. And to do it twice, ” Warren said. ” I don’t know any one that important.”

This isn’t the first time noise at a performance has caused controversy in recent months.

Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Neal Gittleman bounced a wailing baby from a performance in January.

A crying baby is one thing. A jerk on a cell phone is quite another.

And don't forget the Pez dispenser incident at the piano recital.

I love it when someone has got their face in a cellphone and they cross the street and a truck zooms down and obliterates them. Isaac says that's cool.

"Right on!"

If I was a betting man I would put my money down he was dragged there by the wife, didn’t want to be there, and probably enjoyed irritating his wife by doing it.

This is just a modern day version of snoring at the opera...

Then. Now...?

"Then" was, as the saying goes, "A Long Time Ago..."

Have you seen the YouTube videos where Fisher and William Shatner trade insults? Most entertaining.

If someone can’t spend 20 minutes without a cell phone, they better marry it.

there's an app for that.

I don’t think anybody in the theater paid to listen to his phone ring.

The problem isn’t the phone going off. It’s the guy answering the phone.
Some people can’t ignore a phone call. They are REALLY important.

chiding the guy for taking two cell phone calls.

If the guy was sitting next to me I would have been annoyed the first time. The second time I'd have grabbed the phone and thrown it into the balcony...or on the floor, depending how my throwing arm felt.

“Hollywood types are so important, no dare interrupt their play acting.”

Hmmm...let’s try this:

“Conservative speakers are so important, no dare interrupt their speaking.”

or

“Preachers are so important, no dare interrupt their message.”

or yet again

“Children’s music programs are so important, no dare interrupt their performances.”

I’m sure you agree.

THAT is how you handle it.

Recently, people using their cell phones in the restroom has gotten out of hand. In my company, I’ve taken it upon myself to nip this in the bud. When I hear some moron on the pot chatting way, I houst myself up over the stall partition and yell “No cell phones in the restrooms!!!”

HR hasn’t called me yet, but I’m sure they’ll take my side.

I LIKE it when they remind you at the beginning of the show to mute or turn off your phones

At my daughters high school play the teacher said one went off during a crucial dramatic scene last performance and if it happend again she was going to run on the house lights and come down and beat them with her baton

LOL

everyone turned them off (that I could see)
