Not Much Suspense Likely in New York G.O.P. Primary
NY Times ^ | April 23, 2012 | THOMAS KAPLAN

Three weeks ago, Republican officials in New York imagined presidential candidates barnstorming across the state, voters turning out for the state’s primary in droves, and people across the country waiting in suspense for the results.

But it was not meant to be.

With Rick Santorum’s exit from the race, and Mitt Romney’s ascension to the status of presumptive nominee, New York’s presidential primary on Tuesday has been reduced to what many had always expected it would be — an electoral footnote...

--snip--

New York was not without any preprimary action: Newt Gingrich attended the state party’s annual dinner in Manhattan on Thursday and campaigned in Buffalo on Friday with Carl P. Paladino, the Republican nominee for governor in 2010. And Ron Paul spoke before several thousand people at Cornell University on Thursday.

Those candidates had a new incentive to campaign in New York this year, because the state Republican Party dropped the winner-take-all system that it used in the 2008 presidential primary.

This year, it is using a hybrid system that will award two delegates to the winner in each of the state’s 29 Congressional districts. An additional 34 delegates will go to a candidate who gets more than 50 percent of the vote statewide; if no one meets that threshold, those delegates will be distributed proportionally among the candidates who win at least 20 percent of the vote. The final three delegates are top state party officials who decide which candidate to support.

Polling places in the New York City area and in Erie County will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday; in other parts of the state, polls open at noon. There is no Democratic presidential primary.

On June 26, will the Conservative Party hold primaries for federal and state offices as well? Or will Mr. Long get to appoint whomever he wants? With giantkiller Congressman Bob Turner likely to win the GOP Senate nomination to take on Gillibrand, it would be a travesty if Long’s unilateral decision to nominate a different candidate on the CP line guaranteed Gillibrand’s victory.

I don’t know, but it’s a good question.

The June 26 primary is for US Congress and US Senate ONLY!

For all other state offices in NY, assembly, state senate, county executive, judiciary, etc. that will be on Sept 11.

If Turner is the Republican nominee, somehow a deal will be worked out, to assure him the Conservative line as well.

Gillebrand, at this point, is a prohibitive favorite, but to have any chance to defeat her, the GOP and Conservatives MUST have the same candidate. Next case!

I agree on both points, although I think that Gillibrand’s support is very soft and that Turner could be competitive.

If Turner wins the GOP nomination on June 26, how can he get the Conservative line as well? Remember, Hoffman had to stay on the ballot as the Conservative nominee in 2010 even after he ended his campaign and endorsed Doheny. And didn’t Rick Lazio have to get nominated as a judicial candidate in the Bronx in order for Paladino to be given the Conservative Party line?

I admit, I am not too up to date on this situation. I guess I would have pointed to Lazio stepping down at the last minute to allow Paladino the Conservative line.

Mike Long chose Wendy Long to run against Gillebrand. Turner could could have forced a write-in primary (opportunity to ballot) against her. Did he do this? I have not really been following.
