Wow, no one saw this coming. The University of Florida announced this past week that it was dropping its computer science department, which will allow it to save about $1.7 million $1.4 million. The school is eliminating all funding for teaching assistants in computer science, cutting the graduate and research programs entirely, and moving the tattered remnants into other departments.

What is wrong with Landscape Architecture? It is not a crip course.

Isn't that what the illegals do in this country?

Microsoft, Bill Gates, and other tech companies now have another excuse as to why they absolutely need to import tech people from Asia, where they turn out hundreds of computer people every year like football factory Florida and other Southeastern Conference schools turn out football players.

Sad. When all those highly-recruited Florida football players are in their thirties and looking for work in the tech field, they will be shocked to see a lot of imported nerd-appearing young people holding all the tech jobs. Sad.

Many of these 30something used up football players will turn bitter and wonder why they played stupid football and why no body in authority prepared them for the real world of work when they got into their 30s.

These forgotten Florida football stars will wonder why they ended up as security guards during the main part of their lives. Sad.

Yes. I have the feeling that prominent tech people like Bill Gates are happy to hear that Florida is shutting down its computer science department so that he can go before Congress and tell Congress that he just can't find good help in the United States, and so he must go overseas, especially to Asia, where they have more computer science graduates than they can find jobs for. Sad.

I hear Bill Gates is going to lead a group of tech leaders to try to save the Florida computer science department, and these leaders will contribute a lot of money to do so.

Yeah, right.

No. It is part of A/E civil design. I have worked on several projects with one. It’s not rocket science, but it should not be lumped in with Women’s studies.

Maybe the vast majority of UF freshmen are too intellectually challenged to work with computers.

Well except in Cam Newton's case, he just stole them.

Wow, no one saw this coming. The University of Florida announced this past week that it was dropping its computer science department, which will allow it to save about $1.7 million $1.4 million.

The School could have eliminated the entire athletics dept. and had plenty of money left over to not only keep but upgrade the computer science dept.

But you know,Athletics/Sports are so important.NOT.

PR stunt.

According to the article, the state has cut university funding by 30% over six years.

Want to create some funding drama?

“Slash” the C.S. department.

Notice that ZERO C.S. faculty have been fired - just “re-assigned.”

And the funding comparison to UF’s athletic department is completely bogus and malicious.

The A.D. is completely self-supporting.

Half the money earned by the football program is used to subsidize other sports programs that don't make a profit.

And the “shortage” of engineers and computer techs?

Tell that to the thousands of white, middle aged programmers here in Seattle who have been replaced by 25 year old H1-B’s from India and China who have USA work visas.

"All charges against Newton were dropped after he completed a court-approved pre-trial diversion program. "I believe that a person should not be thought of as a bad person because of some senseless mistake that they made," said Newton in 2010. "I think every person should have a second chance. If they blow that second chance, so be it for them.""

Interesting....(Another NFL thugee, who'da guessed?)

"Meanwhile, UF is attempting to save $1.4 million by overhauling one of its engineering departments. But the department, Computer & Information Science and Engineering, isn’t being eliminated. Instead, UF is considering merging it with another department, Electrical and Computer Engineering. No one's major would change, and course offerings would remain the same."

Sorta funny. “landscape architecture”, as gardener.
It is not an easy road, I know two people who have those degrees and and their work is really interesting, from design of amusement park grounds to back yard gardens.

Turf Management actually makes sense here in Florida, the others not so much.

OTOH, can UF compete with UCF and USF in Computer Science? How many choose either one of those over going to Gainesville? Should every school try to compete on all levels? And how hopelessly out of place would those nerds be in the swamp anyway? UF is the party school. If the entire university system was abandoning CompSci it would be an issue, this one might actually make sense if one knew the grand plan.

What a stupid choice. It would be better to drop women’s studies, minority studies, black studies, gender studies......good grief these people are idiots.

They are Gators, and they call their stadium The Swamp for a reason-- they are swamp people.

But seriously, it's OK if they choose not to participate in the 21st century-- their CompSci program didn't compare in the rankings to that of their hated rival, FSU, anyway.

p'raps not but I'm betting it's very tilted towards urban this and that which is all politically correct globally approved bullsh!t; for the simple reason that most LA's work for a government. I said "most", not all.
