Obama: I only paid off my student loans eight years ago
ABC News ^ | 04/24/2012 | Olivier Knox

Posted on 04/24/2012 1:12:29 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

President Barack Obama, courting young voters crucial to his reelection, told a rowdy college-age crowd at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Tuesday that he knows first-hand about the burden of student loans because he only managed to pay his back a scant eight years ago.

"Michelle and I, we've been in your shoes," Obama, who turns 51 in August, told a cheering, capacity crowd of 8,000 at Carmichael Arena.

"Check this out, all right. I'm the president of the United States. We only finished paying off our student loans off about eight years ago. That wasn't that long ago. And that wasn't easy--especially because when we had Malia and Sasha, we're supposed to be saving up for their college educations, and we're still paying off our college educations," he said.

The president's emphasis on his modest upbringing seemed designed to invite comparisons to presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. The White House has denied specifically targeting the multi-millionaire financier with such attacks even as the Obama campaign has pointedly attacked Romney's personal finances.

Obama's stop in North Carolina was the first on a two-day, campaign-style swing through battleground states to reengage young voters who powered his historic 2008 campaign but seem less enthused about the 2012 election. His chief policy message was an appeal for Congress to pass legislation to stop interest rates on a popular student loan from doubling July 1 from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. "I didn't just read about this. I didn't just get some talking points about this. I didn't just get a policy briefing on this," the president said to laughter from the crowd.

Dear Hodar,

In terms of tuition at top-tier schools, the poorer you are, the less you pay.

Currently, Harvard, Princeton and Yale generally expect students with family incomes of $65K/year or less to pay 0% of their tuition, room and board. They are provided grants to pay for all of that. These schools no longer provide student loans as parts of their standard financial aid packages (although they did when the Kenyan anti-Christ was in school), so, if you're not well-to-do, you can go very cheaply, or even free, to some high-profile schools.

If you can get in.

Dear pepsionice,

As I explained to you in a previous thread, folks going to premier schools get financial aid. At Harvard, there is little or no money for “merit scholarships,” but 70% or so of students get financial aid, which nowadays comprises nearly all grant money (my own son's package to Harvard this coming year is over 90% grants and less than 10% work study - no loans whatsoever).

For poor students admitted to high-profile schools such as Columbia, total costs imposed on the students and their families are very low.

As well, these schools didn't cost “$125K for two years of tuition, room and board.” Not in 2010 dollars, not in any dollars. Because college costs have risen much faster than the overall inflation rate for several decades, tuition, room and board at these schools was much lower, both in nominal terms and in real terms 20 - 30 years ago than it is today.

He may regret cracking this door. Didn’t he apply for student aid as an Indonesian exchange student? If the fraud opens the door, we can kick it completely open.

Wait.....didn't Michelle's MS stricken father work really hard to send hereto college?

From the White House Historical Association website:

Mrs. Obama’s journey began in the South Side of Chicago, where Fraser and Marian Robinson instilled in their daughter a heartfelt commitment to family, hard work, and education. Her father worked as a pump operator for the Chicago Water Department while her mother stayed at home to care for Michelle and her older brother Craig. As she watched her father refuse to give in to multiple sclerosis, use two canes to get to his job, and save money to send her to college, she learned that "the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work hard for them."

Now I realize that politically, you get more miles out of daddy working hard to give you a better life, especially when you need to invoke his MS in the wake of an orchestrated attack against another MS victim however, they really need to get their stories straight.

In 2010 dollars, two years of Harvard Law School runs $140k for tuition, room and board.

Law school is generally 3 years.

Paying off the loans 8 years ago doesn’t mean he was in default since he graduated law school in 1991 and his wife in 1988. As long as they made the required payments they wouldn’t be in default. I think you have 10 years to pay it back without extension or other provisions. We’d have to have the details about their student loans, both graduate and undergraduate to know the details. 1991 to 2002 (8 years ago) is 11 years and since school normally ends in June that means the loan was probably paid back in 10 years. What we don’t know is the amount of the loans, were they paid on time and who actually paid the loans back.

When a person has a black and white parent, they always claim blackness. I guess it doesn’t work that way if you’re “white Hispanic.”

It does for one pair of our great nieces, who claim to be Hispanic, "Mexican" even. Their paternal grandparents were both born in Texas, don't know how much farther back that Texas thang goes for them. I have one friend for whom it goes back to the 1600s. Only it was part of New Spain in those days. The great nieces' grandmother sounds just like the wife of that friend of mine. Looks a little similar too, but her father immigrated, legally, during WWII. (He was a barber on a Naval Air Station from then until he retired)

I also have a niece and nephew who have one black, with a touch of American Indian, parent, and one white parent. I think she thinks of herself as Black, but acknowledges that she's "yellow". I don't think her brother thinks of himself as anything but himself. His girlfriend is blond, but she too has a touch American Indian, in common with many an Oklahoman.

1991 to 2002 (8 years ago) Eight years ago was 2004, thus 13 years.

Sounds like a valuable “hook” for some Conservative investigative Journalist to “look into the validity” of Obama’s claim. Thus cracking open a door to Obama’s past history.

Prove it. Let's see the college tuition bills and payment receipts. (In fact, show anything that proves he was even enrolled in the college.)

Exactly! Show us the college tuition "loans" you AND Moochelle both had and paid off...yourselves.

I'll believe it when I see it.

His typical white grandmother was the VP of a bank. His grandparents were much more his family than their daughter was. he also went to a prestigious private school in Hawaii.

She became VP in 1970 and retired in 1986, so that would have meant high income during Obama's high school and college years.

Grandpa's a bit of a mystery. He went to work for Pratt's, a furniture store in the Honolulu area. He left them in 1967 and the branch closed in 1973.

So what was he doing later on? Was he a house husband? Some say he was a CIA operative, but you don't go from a quarter century selling furniture to being a spy. If he did have a job, that would also make a contribution to his grandson's tuition bills.

So he was in default on those loans for 20 years before he paided it off? Only in america.

*******

I wonder how much newly graduated Obama paid on his Colombia and Occidental loans between the time he graduated from Columbia and the time he entered Harvard a few years later.

I bet it wasn't very much if he paid anything at all.

I wonder if he told Columbia financial officials that he had an outstanding loan at Occidental, and I wonder if he told Harvard about his Occidental and Columbia loans.

The loans at Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard must have been huge, because there is no record that Obama worked at a job during his college years.

And living in expensive New York could not have been cheap for Obama while he was a young undergraduate at Columbia.

In my opinion, President Obama has unexpectedly and dangerously raised more questions about how he financed his college education.

I bet Obama now wishes that he had never brought up the subject about his college loans in his recent speech at the University of North Carolina, because he now realizes that reporters will surely pressure him to answer in more detail this question: How did you pay for your studies at 3 different colleges?

The elite school Obama went to in HI is $18,000 a year today, looks like a college campus. He tried to create a picture of a the poor struggling childhood and student.

He has no proof of the loans, but has proved to be very good at lies.

Not a problem, it simply implies he had a substantial amount of income in those years working for a charity of Churches when he only became “Christian” in 1988 and then worked to become a “community organizer” before going to law school.

Those substantial incomes, even if they were gifts, are surely reported on his income tax returns, along with the payments of those Boston tickets.

In 2007, then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama missed two votes on the student loan interest bill that he now wants Congress to extend. Obama twice skipped the Senate vote on the College Cost Reduction and Access Act when the bill came to the Senate floor first in July and again in September of 2007, according to public records.
Resident Omuslim continues doing what he does best. Nothing! He either abstains, misses the vote; or goes on vacation. He has been AWOL his entire life.

“I hate to do this, because it’s just not me to criticize typos and misspellings. However, this one is so glaring. It’s not payed, it’s paid. I hope my little reminder helps you in the future.”

Many English language dictionaries disagree with your assessment and list “payed” as a verb: “A past tense and a past participle of pay”.
“However”, if it feels so good for you to point out others’ perceived shortcomings, carry on. Narcissists often do so. I hope my little reminder helps you in the future. :-)

OMG. You are projecting your own emotions on me. If you read my post with any comprehension, you would know that I said it doesn't feel good to me to point out others shortcomings, etc. In fact, I hate it and have never done it in all 12 years of posting on FR. Thanks for the little reminder of arcane and nonstandard usage of the word “payed.” It will remind me of you who would intimate that I was narcissistic without a soupcon of proof or knowledge of me. How's that for arcana? I hope you enjoy trafficking in your secret and mysterious language and spellings. Go for it. We low-brows will try to keep up.

EVERYBODY is narcissistic. It’s a necessary stage of child development. Some adults are just pathologically so the extent that it is a personality disorder. :-) I studied on it, haha.

I was not suggesting you are the latter. As a matter of fact I was trying to be funny in my antisocial way.

Anyhow it feels great to be right and if that’s our motivation we should probably just keep quiet. Just my opinion.
