The Marine Corps said Tuesday that it is taking another step toward allowing women to serve in combat roles.
Gen. James Amos, Marine Corps commandant, said selected groups of female Marines will get combat unit assignments later this year as part of a study on the appropriateness of women on the battlefield.
Amos announced the initiative in a message posted on a service website.
The program calls for assigning women officers, gunnery sergeants and staff sergeants to combat artillery, tank, amphibious, engineer and assault units.
Current law restricts women from serving in direct combat in all but a few assignments, such as motor transport or aircraft crews.
But in practice women have served in combat jobs as special "attachments" during the Iraq war and in Afghanistan. More than 140 U.S. military women have been killed in the wars.
Last year, Congress ordered a review of the policy formally excluding women from combat roles.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta took that a further step in February by directing the services assign women to some combat roles and study the results.

We can make it worse by removing sexual boundaries regarding fraternization.
I actually believe that is coming, because a gay leader will be denied access to a gay lower ranking lover in his own unit.
That will be interpreted as homophobic and restrictions will be removed.
That will contribute to utter chaos.
Absolutely agree, and that really narrows down the women that would qualify.

The jobs these women were detailed to do after they got to SWA theater went beyond “basic” combat related patrols
They got trained in the field in a catch-up fashion to be able to defend themselves in combat patrols and back up the men
This DoD evolution in assigning their roles formal recognition as “combat” is recognition of their effectiveness in certain WOT combat situations
Not every woman - or man - is cut out to fight another Pork Chop Hill, but many battlefields these days bear little resemblance to Verdun, Pork Chop Hill or Battle of the Bulge.

And what we’ll see happen is that as women step up to do front line combat the men will step back and do support roles instead. Before you know it the majority of women will be in those roles.
All I can say is...ladies first!
In addition- I think there have simply GOT to be a few places left in the world where men can get away from us (women). Not that it’s a reason to enlist in the infantry but I look around these days and realize there’s almost no hallowed ground anymore where men don’t have to be on alert to possible crazed and angry women trying to get their “rights”.

I watched every female in my plebe company at the USNA go down with shin splints during the first week. Several could run well, but put them in boondockers and have them double-timing under arms. Shin splints.

And you have devined that such scenarios will never happen again? Please reecall the admonition against fighting the last war.
I would also refer you to “House to House” BY SSG David Bellavia on Fallujah as a small scale Stalingrad or “Outlaw Platoon” by Sean Parnell with a light infantry platoon performing similar feats to Merril’s Marauder’s in Afghanistan.
Your PC fantasies do not confuse those of us who have experienced infantry combat at the sharp end. We simply do not need large numbers of women in this role on the first teams to engage the enemy considering the fact that this nation’s population is over 300,000,000. There are more than enough men for the role. When we are getting defeated like the Soviets were in Operation Barbarossa we can either consider surrender or creating Night Witches Flying Squadrons.
