Rural kids, parents angry about Labor Dept. rule banning farm chores
The Daily Caller ^ | April 25, 2012 | Patrick Richardson

Posted on 04/25/2012 6:07:51 AM PDT by yoe

A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”

The new regulations,(first proposed) August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course.

Rossie Blinson, a 21-year-old college student from Buis Creek, N.C., told The Daily Caller that the federal government’s plan will do far more harm than good.

“The main concern I have is that it would prevent kids from doing 4-H and FFA projects if they’re not at their parents’ house,” said Blinson.

Here's another negative consequence they haven't thought about.

In just a matter of a few years there will be a huge increase in the number of injuries and deaths on the job.

Nothing is more dangerous on the job than an 18 yo kid that has never worked a day in their life at anything with any kind of risk.

They have no concept of danger and will put themselves in a position where they can get hurt or killed, and have no thought about it.

They also get other people hurt or killed because they have no concept of the risk involved with the job.

They’re coming for you if you live on a farm.

I don't, but I suspect they'll be coming for me anyway.

Remember who really got Elian Gonzalez returned to Cuba. It was Archer Daniels Midland.

This will run the Amish out of the country.

I started driving the tractor to plwo and cultivate at about ten. at 12 I was in the barn hanging tobacco and spearing it. at 14 I was hiring out to other farmers after we had harvested our own crop.

Do kids get hurt? Occasionally.
But they learn good work habits, They gain strength, and they don’t need to go to the gym most important they are with their dad.(God I wish I could be with him doing that again.)
They are much better off than joining a drug gamg in the city.

We had plenty of time to play after the work was done and we got hurt more often on the playing field than on the farm.

The family farm is the last place children are ALLOWED to learn non-union work habits, therefore it must be destroyed.

Neither big labor ,big agribusiness, nor big government want independent people.

The child labor laws are at least as much about preserving union jobs as they are about protecting children from exploitation.

It is a further attack on agrarian religious organizations like the Anabaptists, Amish, Mennonites, etc... (bible clingers).

These kids are stealing jobs that could be held by good hard working UNION employees. We need to organize the Family farm so that Obama’s UNION supportors can have good paying jobs and put the family farm out of business. Ya that is the OBUMMER way.

Oh, no worries about the near future.
70% of “men” aren’t “grown up” until they are 30 these days,
so that means that they aren’t holding any sort of real job,
just hanging out in their mom’s basement playing video games.

We are so screwed when an EMP takes out our infrastructure, society will collapse in a matter of hours, because nobody will know how to cope. We just always assume technology will be there for us. We stop teaching people how to live off the land, at our peril.
