I have posted info several times about getting back dues used for political purposes and about giving all of the dues to charity. In Southern California, I have helped a few teachers do so. Okay, with all the complaints on FR about the evil thug unions, will someone please step forward and tell us you have actually done it. I'd like to hear from you. If you are in a union and have not demanded money back that was used for political purposes or opted that all you dues money go to charity, you have no right to complain about the unions. So, who will step forward? Do I heard the sound of crickets?
You can also use this info to help union friends, particularly teachers.

With all do respect, your assertion here is a bit naive with regards to some industries. For government unions (teachers, state workers, etc.) your approach may not have consequences.
But for construction, factory workers and truck drivers, folks that are frequently fuloughed and layed off until the next opportunity arrives, you do not want to draw attention to yourself as a bad union member, especially if you have many years in toward a pension.
I would not recommend this approach for a member of the labor union, carpenter’s union, Teamsters or UAW.
