Does the US debt matter? Ryan says yes; bishops, no

One lay Catholic defending Ryan is Marc Thiessen. In his latest column, Thiessen argues that it’s not Ryan’s budget cuts that are “unjust and wrong,” it’s the attack on Ryan by the chairman of the bishops’ Committee on Justice and Human Development, Bishop Stephen Blaire of Stockton.

Thiessen echoes Ryan’s argument that a debt crisis will “hurt the poor the first and the worst.” ... Bishop Blaire has written several letters this month to various Congressional committees. The word debt doesn’t appear in any of them. Nor does he address the issue of expanding welfare statism that Pope John Paul II raised in his encyclical Centesimus annus, also quoted by Ryan and Thiessen

Bishops attack Paul Ryan's budget but completely ignore the debt disaster and the problems of the welfare state. They also haven't noticed Greece's bishops, who have made themselves almost completely dependent on their debt-ridden government and now have discovered money doesn't grow on trees....

When the whole economy collapses under the weight of the debt, that’ll REALLY hurt the poor.

Wisconsin Bishop attacks paul Ryan ping

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping.

It must be fashionable to attack Paul Ryan. The faculty at Georgetown U (where he is scheduled to speak soon) went after him yesterday. Paul must be hurting the leftists.

This should be required reading in the seminaries. Then the clergy wouldn't be so misguided on economic matters:

That’s being missed: the cuts are reductions of volume of spending increases. Suppose the government was spending a hundred bucks a year supporting the unemployed. Next year, they plan to spend another 50, for a total of 150 dollars a year. But instead, a plan is put forth which cuts that to thirty bucks more a year. So the total still increases, but the degree of increase is less. That’s essentially every plan that been put forth in the last few years.

If the Congress uses Ryan’s plan, or any similar plan, the spending volume, or amount, will still be more, just not as much as originally planned. Thus, the amount that we’re in the hole still gets larger, and when the whole thing goes kerblooey, the pain of it lasts longer.

Perhaps it’s still better than the raping of the treasury committed by another party; it’s still neither enough to fix the troubles, nor will it likely make a dent.

Bishop Blaire can go to hell.

Literally.

Continuing to fund debt out of the pockets of future generations is literally evil, and Blaire supports it.

The Bishops should look at the portion of the annual budget that is used to pay nothing but interest on the debt and understand that the more debt we have, the greater that number - and all of that could be used to spend on other things if the debt is reduced and eventually paid down. Just balancing the budget is also not enough.

The Catholic Bishops are not a unified bloc. Most of them are Fabian Socialists. Some do deserve praise for standing up to the “mandate” but most of them are holding their noses and hoping Obama offers a compromise: Obama drops the mandate; the Bishops preach in support of immigration amnesty. The Bishops have already sent the signal on that. Follow the $!

Stupid-ass bishops. Seriously.

If the debt collapses 95% of the country will be “the poor”.

What a bunch of liberal numb-nuts. This is what happens when you have church leaders that do not live normal lives and have to actually a) do their own shopping, b) budget their own finances, c) pay for their residences themselves, d) raise a family, and e) also work a job and do it well.

And I know what I’m talking about if anyone will attempt to say I don’t, my mom was a parish secretary for over 10 years and we were family friends of all the priests there. I spent plenty of time over there and I know how they are taken care of - and it’s VERY well.
