Texas Gov. Rick Perry originally endorsed Newt Gingrich as the top candidate after dropping out of the Republican presidential race.

But with Gingrich set to quit the campaign trail, Perry on Wednesday evening gave his support to the probable nominee, Mitt Romney.

"Mitt Romney has earned the Republican presidential nomination through hard work, a strong organization, and [a] disciplined message of restoring America after nearly four years of failed job-killing policies from President [Barack] Obama and his administration," Perry said in a statement provided to FOX News Channel.

"So today I join the many conservative Republicans across the nation in endorsing Mitt Romney for president and pledge to him, my constituents and the Republican Party that I will continue to work hard to help defeat President Obama.

You do realize that Jefferson and Madison created the original Republican Party (now the Democrats), and Adams and Hamilton were founders of the Federalist Party (died in 1816). Despite their intentions they wasted no time in creating political parties. The same people within a five year period created the Constitution and political parties. It wasn't different people, but the same people.

I don’t know what the heck you’re talking about, but Rick Perry was the best candidate we had.

More people should have supported him.

I’m glad he endorsed Romney though... that should make Texas a lock for Romney although he would have gotten it anyway.

You retain your title as an obnoxious troll who helped to drive our best candidate out and now you’re whining about who’s left.

The Founders did NOT want a two party system.

I'm not going to try to argue intent, others can no doubt do that better than me. The result, whether they wanted it or not, IS a 2 party system and has been almost right from the beginning. We've had 1 political party collapse (the Whigs) and be entirely replaced by Republicans who immediately became the second leg of the two party system. And it didn't happen at the Presidential level first, and no Libertarian Party, Constitution Party, or any other newfangled Party people dream up this time around is going to be even remotely competitive or make a single iota of difference.

So long as there is no opportunity for coalition government with multiple party's, there will be a 2 party system with both aiming for 50%+1 of the vote for the win.

I don’t think he HATED doing it. Obviously he wished for another outcome but he cares about America unlike some of the people who come on every thread to brag about voting for Obama.

Newt’s endorsement will cause an earthquake ‘round these parts.

When Sarah endorses it will be one of those pole-shifting, Mayan end-of-the-world dealios.

I don’t care what you “were” Perrywinkle or otherwise.
I know what you are and that’s a jerk.

So? They also knew that political parties would tear the country apart and tried to avoid it. Their first design lasted for 4 elections. Yup. They had to change it. But that doesn’t make what they knew less true and that is that parties are divisive and become factions that control. The losers are the people.

We’ll have to compare damages. You might have as much corruption and misery, but you lose points for every day of nice weather.

The GOP is dead.

They consistently work with Dems/MSM against Conservative candidates and our issues, any Conservative who continues to support them at this late date, has simply refused to face it.

The GOP campaigns AGAINST Conservatives in elections and even more importantly, trashes Conservative legislation to the American people we are trying to reach.

They marginalize us, and undermine us in the press.

They are embarrassed by Conservatives, and in many cases hate us.

Romney and the RNC will destroy Conservatives in the House and Senate.

And they were right. Political parties are divisive and allow a small faction of people to have control. The people are the losers.

I think they would be neck and neck at this point. And Rick Perry doesnt have the presentation or communication skills to win the appeal of anyone beyond a small core of supporters. I honestly cannot figure out what is up with the Republicans. Perhaps conservatives who actually want to and can improve American economy and social structure are getting turned off of politics altogether ?

Unfortunately, if Free Republic is any indication, many will 'sit' out or vote 3rd party.

I don't think the strongest anti-Romney voices here on FR are any real indication of the national electorate as a whole.

I think the fall election will be a referendum on Obama and I think most people have pretty clear preferences regarding him.

You started it, dumba$$.

Seems to me several people here think YOU are a jerk!

Again, your type of behavior is why people don't come to FR anymore. You are shallow and a waste of time!

You could not be more wrong about Rick Perry.

He has great communication skills. He makes a barn burner of a speech, he’s funny, likeable and is a true conservative.

If he decides to campaign for Mitt, he will be a huge asset.

I suspect you are like so many other people who knew almost nothing about Perry and believed the lies told about him.
