CONCORD, Mass. -- Concord became the first town in the country to ban the sale of single-serving PET bottled water on Wednesday night, our news partner Wicked Local/Concord reported.

After close to two hours of debate, Warrant Article 32, the Drinking Water in Single-Serving PET Bottles Bylaw, narrowly passed by 39 votes during Wednesday’s session of Town Meeting.

The official teller count showed 403 voting in favor, and 364 opposed.

The bottled water bylaw passed at this year’s Town Meeting bans the sale of non-sparkling, unflavored drinking water in single-serving polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles of 1 liter (34 ounces) or less in Concord on or after Jan. 1, 2013.

Supporters say it's the most sweeping water bottle ban passed by any municipality in the nation and will cut down on pollution and limit exposure to toxic chemicals.

They’ll regret that one is they ever have any emergency that cuts off the municipal water supply.

I think all us folks in eastern Massachusetts should make it a point to throw our empty water bottles out while driving through Concord.

Coming next year, the 35 ounce two serving bottle. Share it with a friend - but don't you dare drink it in one shot by yourself.

“They’ll regret that one is they ever have any emergency that cuts off the municipal water supply.”

Good point.

Everything is super sized nowadays. No reason why water shouldn’t be. Buy a gallon of H2O!

Remember drinking water fountains?
They should bring those back.

Given the idiocy of that state, it appears that they may want to give up the local water and start consuming more of the bottled stuff.

You gotta be kitty'ing me!

Well I'm not Kitty'ing here either: Tonight they vote on whether or not to have a local income tax! That's right, in addition to Federal and State.. kind of like BIG cities like NYC do, Concord will vote tonight on the little town having a local income tax. The "rationale" is that it would help "decrease" property taxes. You and I well know, unless it is voted on to REPLACE the property tax, it will be used to MAINTAIN it... and add revenue with income tax.

Population of 17,668 at last census, and this got passed with 403 votes.

I have a feeling a whole lot of the silent majority are regretting not voting today...

Look for these Concord phonies to be stocking up on bottled water at supermarkets just over the town line.

Well as one living in Arseachusetts and on well water I can assure you it’s not in my water...and my water is almost perfectly balanced, nor hard like most.

A stupid bylaw for sure. Like someone else said, good luck if the SHTF.

Will they allow single serve water in GLASS bottles instead?
I miss Perrier in glass bottles. Doesn’t taste the same.

I am okay with that as long as the cat is strong enough to maintain control of his pet dog on the leash at ALL times. No exceptions.
