Richmond International Raceway
Racing actually began in Richmond in 1946, when Ted Horn drove a Champ Car to victory over a .5-mile dirt track at Strawberry Hill Speedway.
NASCAR was founded in 1948, and five years later the sanctioning body staged a race in its Grand National Division at Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds on April 19, 1953.
Since that first race in Richmond in 1953, the track has undergone three name changes, four configuration changes and one surface change, from dirt to asphalt.
Lights were also added to the facility in 1991. RIR is the only track to hold all of its major events under the lights.
Richmond's unique, .75-mile layout produces tremendous side-by-side racing, yet drivers obtain high enough speeds to give it a superspeedway feel. That rare combination still allows for the beating and banging that fans love, with the drivers' skill playing a major role.
The track's fall date is now the final race leading up to the Chase.

Richmond Saturday Night race thread Ping!
Im in! Thanks Norm.
Working on a barbecue menu for Saturday Night Racing. It won’t be any part of a dog..
I don’t think I will be there this year. Will go in the fall. I bet attendance will be down to 70000. Hope I’m wrong. HD TV is helping to kill racing. Lots of people would rather watch at home, which is what I will do.
Opps correction, just saw the number on tv, its 388,000 people.
If an HDTV can ever emit a burnt Sunoco fuel smell it’ll be game over for us ever going to another race - even with 1/3rd of the televised event dedicated to commercials. A good surround-sound system can raise the roof of the house on those ‘crank it up” moments.
He's fast so far.. and smoooooth. Hope the weather plays nice.. Qualifying coming up ..
WTH is your point Dog???
HOW DID YOU KNOW HE IS ONE OF MY TEAM MEMBERS????
lol.. he ain’t one of mine.. darn. but Mark Martin is.. whew!
50’s and rain for Saturday night. Not looking good.
Yuck. fingers crossed
Luck - Been lucky this year, so far. Wasn’t last year.
Dog? Political - We’re having Tri-Tip tonight.
Burnt Sunoco fuel? I love the aroma of burnt race car fuel. The only thing I like more at the track is the fly-over.
as of now..

Saturday Night Racing under the lights and gray&moisture on Fox !! Ping
April 28, 2012 6:48 PM, EDT
6:43 p.m. ET — Kyle Busch has won the past three spring races at Richmond and rolls off fifth. Could this be the race that snaps his winless drought this season? Carl Edwards may have something to say about that and would like to end a streak of his own. The No. 99 rolls off second and Edwards is looking for his first victory at the .75-mile short-track.
5:41 p.m. ET — The rain has cleared out of Richmond and the track dryers are on the track. If Friday night is any indication, this race is going to be phenomenal. Make sure you watch the race with TrackPass, follow along with Live Leaderboard and join our live race chat.
4:35 p.m. ET — It’s race day in the Commonwealth of Virginia and 43 of the world’s best drivers are ready for 400 heart-pounding laps around Richmond International Raceway. The bad news, my friend Doug F. called me and said, “Hello for a soaking wet Richmond.” The good news, it looks like the cell is departing which should give the track plenty of time to dry. The bad news, there is a 50 percent chance for more rain at 9 p.m. But as we all know, it’s easier to predict the winner of this race than the weather. Mark Martin is on the pole when the green drops at 7:44 p.m. ET.
LIVE LEADERBOARD : Capital City 400 presented by Virginia is for Lovers
I hope we can get this one in.
The Track dryers are on the track...who’s watch’n the Crazy Columbian?
7:00 p.m. ET — Driver introductions are under way and we are 45 minutes from green flag.
HaPPy is a 9er fan, Matt a cheesehead, Bif a Seahawk
He’s under lock and key in the Red Trailer.
Howdy!!!! in for now!
Here’s to a no rain delays race!
7:31 p.m. ET — The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band performs the national anthem. A couple trumpets, a french horn, a trombone and a tuba have never sounded so good.
7:30 p.m. ET — Reverend Joe Ellison, the senior pastor from Essex Village Community Church delivers the Invocation.
And for the liberals who may be watching, it showed the softer side of the military. 8-)
Thank you!!! :)
P1 in practice - let’s see what he can do with it tonight.
7:33 p.m. ET — Good news, folks — where they qualified is where they will start. No cars will be going to the rear this evening.
Here’s to that !
Military bands are the best!
I thought someone changed an engine...Boyer?
All, take a look at the very top of the track. Today they just to a little bit of the off to try and make racing better because the attendance is down so much.
Some drivers laughed and said basically it was a stupid move and won't have any bearing on the race.
50 bucks if Juan Poblar takes the Ford pace car out.
They just took a little bit of the surface off the track.
Mark Martin with the 1st lap. whew.. hope he keeps the smoke in the engine tonight
no problemo, I translate internetese real good.
