Paul Ryan Suddenly Decides That He Hates Ayn Rand
New York Magazine ^ | 4/27/2012 | Dan Amira

Yesterday, Ryan claimed that Ayn Rand's philosophy "reduces human interactions down to mere contracts and it is antithetical to my worldview." But in 2005, Ryan said, "The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person, it would be Ayn Rand," and in 2003, he claimed that he gave out copies of Atlas Shrugged as Christmas presents. And those two examples are really only the tip of the Rand-love iceberg. Is this how you impress Mitt Romney? By proving that you can flip-flop as egregiously as

“Free trade” is a large part, of America’s decline.

You couldn't have been a Rand adherent for very long with your oft-stated disdain for freedom.

I can identify with Ryan. I enjoyed Rand and her views appealed to me when I was younger. Over the years, less and less. She’s good on capitalism and free markets, but loses it completely for me at any level above that; her metaphysics are extremely week.

I clearly miss read this quote, I’m still not sure I fully understand it, my apologies to Mr. Hoffer and I will see if I can acquire some of his writings and educate myself, I simply had not ever heard of him and mistook him for the communist Erik Holder to whom I would and could never apologise.

We never did get part two of that movie, did we....

Considering that Part 1 only came out a year ago, how soon do you expect Part 2 to be produced, filmed and released?

But to answer your question, the tentative release date is fall of this year.......

Randy’s spot on about socialism, but you can tell she was probably a B in real life. Very hostile to religion.

My question for the Ayn Rand types is why the hell should I (as a taxpayer in the Ayn Rand world model) pay taxes to enforce some dumbass contract between two people who I have nothing to do with?

Rand’s seems to have had more influence on bad literature in this country than on government economic policies.

The original plan was for April 15 release dates on three consecutive years, which was reasonable considering that it should have been filmed as a continuous production. (A few Harry Potter movies and the Lord of the Rings came a year apart and they were much bigger spectacles.)

Of course, that was before the movie failed to meet expectations. Glad to hear that they're still doing part 2 -- I was afraid it had been abandoned.

“Free trade” isn’t to blame as much as the US having a government that makes it nearly impossible for us to practice it here.

Having oppressive regulations and the highest taxes on Earth makes the US a terrible place for investment.

big yawn.

If Ryan were a liberal they would say he has a “nuanced” view of Rand.

Unless you are a hardcore believer in her atheist objectivist view...then you are going to wind up rejecting alot of her worldview.

Apart from that...she was brilliant at nailing class envy to the wall, and was very prophetic despite her atheism.

I still remember her commercial for the New York Daily News. They had a campaign where they had writers (from Rand to Jimmy Breslin) endorse the paper. Literally the only words you could make out in the entire ad were "Ayn Rand" and "Daily News." But given the fervency of her acolytes (somewhat like the Paulies), that was probably enough.

Source, please. Not believable.

How many days did the ad run and when was it? Was it a full page? Were you a subscriber? Ayn Rand would never let anyone associate her name with Jimmy Breslin or any of the other of those NY lefties.

If we would have let them fail in the fall of 2008 this fiscal nightmare would be over and billionaires would be millionaires and the old guard would have been properly replaced by the new entrepreneur, the young guns creating something the people want.

As a novelist, Ayn Rand makes a decent political philosopher. She makes a couple of good points, but then drives those points into the ground with melodrama.

Getting through Atlas Shrugged was a struggle.

I agree with Officer Barbrady's assessment of Atlas Shrugged:

"Yes, at first I was happy to be learning how to read. It seemed exciting and magical, but then I read this: Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I read every last word of this garbage, and because of this piece of ----, I am never reading again."

I don’t see how Ryan could say he is a acolyte of Ayn Rand and vote for TARP and endorse the auto company [union] bailouts.

I see Ryan called a "self-described acolyte of Ayn Rand" on a liberal site, but really, almost nobody describes themselves or someone they agree with as an acolyte. It's usually almost always a pejorative used to make somebody sound like a cultist.

People get politically interested or inspired by a lot of hero-figures. It's usually a phase though. Time passes. Politicians get caught up in events. Old issues fade. New conflicts heat up.

Its release date is October 2012, just in time for the elections. In the teaser trailer below there’s a short clip from a Rand interview that comes from a 1959 episode of the Phil Donohue show.

I agree with your assessment and experience. I've also learned that her adherents don't like to ask tough questions. Several have looked at these 2 challenges, but nobody has answered them. and its expansion: In the end it's very difficult to defend an elitist just because she's not a creature of the Left. In fact, in many ways she is the defender of the GOP-E, but her adherents just cannot admit it.

In August, 1973, after I’d interviewed Heinlein for the New York Daily News, George Nobbe, the Sunday editor who’d commissioned my Heinlein interview, asked me who I wanted to interview next. I chose Rand, and proceeded to get in touch with her through her office. She had been burned by the press so often that she was hesitant to do a newspaper interview, but made an exception because at the time — hard as it sounds to believe — Ayn Rand was doing television commercials advertising the Daily News!

Okay. I’ll accept Schulman’s report without challenge. The fact is, the Daily News was very conservative in those days so I’m puzzled as to why Breslin would have been on board. Thanks for your patience.
