Former presidential candidate Rick Santorum warned that Mitt Romney might not present a "clear contrast" to President Obama in the general election. Judging by Monday's action on the campaign trail, Mr. Santorum had a point.
On a day when the White House urged Congress to increase student-loan subsidies, Mr. Romney had an opportunity to draw a sharp distinction between the expanding Obama entitlement state and a plan to revive the private economy.
But instead of laying out plans to create jobs and reduce government spending, the former Massachusetts governor arrived at the same policy conclusion as Barack Obama. "Given the bleak job prospects that young Americans coming out of college face today," said Mr. Romney, "I encourage Congress to temporarily extend the current low rate on subsidized undergraduate Stafford loans. I also hope the president and Congress can pass the extension responsibly that offsets its cost in a way that doesn't harm the job prospects of young Americans."
House members who have been opposing the extension know it is anything but responsible. The Obama-Romney subsidy will keep rates as low as 3.4% for many student borrowers, not that far above the 3.1% rate that the Treasury pays to borrow for the long term. If interest rates spike, taxpayers could be losing on every single new loan, never mind the cost of defaults. And as for offsets, the White House and Senate Democrats favor a new tax on small businesses. If Mr. Romney can't provide a contrast to that idea, Republicans will know they're in for a very long campaign.

So would, apparently, a lot of FReepers.
Romney has consistently throughout his political career in Mass. been a moderate Republican, and in his personal life he has lived a pretty conservative life. Neither of us know how he would govern as president, but I know that he would be 100% better than that uber-alinskyite community agitating vermin occupying the WH right now.
Santorum was right on the money when as one of his issues discussing the need for a College degree
Right now the public and particularly conservatives are being badgered to take in Romney when during his campaign and after he has not made real effort to appear on most conservative talk shows or approach tea party groups. Hes got some talkies carrying water for him only to move 10 feet forward and find another 5 gallon pail to pick up on some lib position hes dropped off. From No So Fast Mr.Romney
Actually, we do - he's govern pretty much as he did in Massachusetts. Which is not "100% better" than how Obama has governed. In fact, it's close to the same as Obama has governed.
Oh, that's rich. Are you going to make the ludicrous claim that Romney represents Tea Party values?
No but we should take the power away from the hyperventilating marxist rapers of the Constitution FIRST, shouldn't we? Will our cause have more impact and leverage w/ the moderate Republican Romney as president or the 2nd term transformational community agitator with scores to keep and enemies list to settle??
Just the opposite - I’m saying you have a lot of FReepers on here who would rather lose with someone like Romney than take a chance on trying to win with an actual conservative.
Calm down, DB, check out my recent posting history. I’m on your side.
Given how a RINO Romney administration can simply rely on a coalition of Dems and RINOs in Congress, the notion that conservatives will have any leverage on Romney is uextremely unlikely.
Besides, he knows that conservatives are going along with installing him as the nominee since he’s “inevitable,” so he knows that “conservatives” will just go along with anything he does as President, too.
Frankly, a Romney administration might end up being WORSE than a 2nd Obama term - at least the GOP in Congress and the Senate will make something of a pretense of fighting Obama. They won’t if it’s THEIR guy proposing the spending and the regulation.
Oh yeah? So Romney is also an illegitimate office-holder w/ the same audacity to actually fake his own BC?? He has also kept an enemies list of fellow Americans to settle scores w/?? He has thrown American against American, black against white, rich against poor, male against female, illegals against Americans, on and on and on and on??? Has he pal’ed around w/ domestic and foreign terrorists and murderers and enemies of the USA??? Please, don’t stop me, I can go on and on and on and on.
I am so sick and tired of this sham equivalency of the dog-eat-dog scum world of the agitator-in-chief and Romney. I don’t really understand from where it feeds from, but it will only hurt this country.
Mitt, “ME TOO” Romney, it’s getting difficult to even comment, it’s becoming just another “oh well” situation. Did Romney himself ever comment on “etch a Sketch”? Now another of his aides, I’m assuming part of his campaign staff, has commented that the auto bailout was Romney’s idea and that it was co-opted by obama, would that include ignoring bankruptcy laws, shafting the bondholders, bailing out the union and giving them ownership?
There’s no “sham equivalency” going on. On things that actually matter - like policies and political positions - they are the same.
Abortion - same
Gay agenda - same
Judges - same
Guns - same
Taxes - same
Health Care - same
Immigration - same
The fact that Romney a gen-u-wine birth certificate doesn’t make him a lick better than Obama on anything that really counts.
This extension of reduced student loan interest rates was going to pass no matter what. Romney took the whole touchy feely portion of the education issue off the table. Now he can slam Obama on the graduate jobless rate, exploding tuition and the 85% failure to launch rate.
Well well well, finally a whiff of honesty here! So your motives are clear now. You would rather have obambam rule w/ his 2nd term iron fist mentality in this constitutional republic of the USA?? WOW!!!!!
Immigration not the same. Healthcare not the same. But still what most matters IS the legitimacy of the Chief Executive Officer of the USA in my book. ALWAYS.
Well, if this early incident is any indication, no. It looks like Romney would be inclined to form a coalition of RINOs and Democrats that would isolate conservatives and allow Romney to revert to his liberal/socialist tendencies and also would allow the GOP-E off the leash of fiscal conservatism that the Tea Party represents.
Apparently, you’re too much of a retard to understand complex ideas. Oh well. I wasted my time with you.
A RINO by nature and inclination is anti-confrontational, but a radical alinskyite feeds on confrontation and power and vengeance and satisfaction of sticking it to his fantasized “enemies” and w/ one as egotistical and narcissistic as The Won bitter marxist??? Who knows where that will lead the country when he has absolutely no more constraints. But a RINO will do whatever to not confront the wrath of anyone, that includes US, the conservatives. I am never saying our work is done. we get obambam out and we go home. NO, rather, the hardest part of our work is just about beginning. We must stay awake and alert and fight whenever and wherever the RINOs go astray. But obambam rather enjoys our fury, don’t you see that. It’s the psyche of the beast that is out of control. He is mugabe-in-the-making madness for this country to contemplate. obambam MUST GO and if the RINO is our last option to get that job done we must hold our nose and get the scumbag constitution pisser ( excuse my language, I truly don’t like to use such words, but there is no other word for what obambam is doing) out of the WH.
Oh oh, what fine language for a Freeper!!! Quite Occupeerish of you!
Somehow not knowing how Romney would govern, while he drags around a record full of EXACTLY how he would govern is a *plus* in your world.
Thinkers like you remind me of those who boarded the trains. On a wing and a prayer they loaded with utter naivete, which of course led to getting fried.
Your remarks call for a “Bless your heart” moment.
Alltogether now. BLESS YOUR HEART!
I agree. Romney is Romney and he doesn’t even pretend to know for sure who he is himself. His record is solid socialist, but with all the excuses in the world for being so, he says, since he was after all in Massachusettes.
The religious liberty thing we see today was seeded up by Romney in MA already. After all, it wasn’t like it was Mormon’s who give the large damn aboug abortion, or else as a fine Bishop of his cult Romney could never have cut the mustard and force fed abortion coverage for the Catholic run institutions there.
You are right, Yash, that with Romney as president the GOPE who put him there will be quite inclined to back his socialist habits in Congress and the Senate, whereas if Obama put the same crap forward, they would fight it tooth and nail.
So, how are we so much better off with a Republikin Socialist in the White House. We run a good risk of being worse off than BLOCKING Obama from doing the identical things.
On the other hand, REBELLION IS TOO DAMN HARD AND IT”S SCARY, and the conservative cowards are falling like flies because of it.
How silly they are beginning to look trying to defend Romney, who is already at Mach IV speeding into Marxism himself, as different from Obama.
