ACLU Files Lawsuit To Overturn Pa. Voter ID Law

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania announced that it is filing a lawsuit today in an effort to overturn the state’s new voter ID law.

The lawsuit will name the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Governor Tom Corbett and Secretary of Commonwealth Carol Aichele. The goal will be to stop the law before it goes into effect in November.

“It’s one of the most draconian of such laws passed within the United States,” says NAACP Philadelphia Branch President Jerry Mondesire, whose organization has joined the ACLU lawsuit.

He says time of the essence, because if the law is not overturned, thousands of Pennsylvania voters could be disenfranchised.

Liberals know that Voter ID will stand constitutional muster. This is just a means of preventing those laws from having an impact on the 2012 election.

We cant have anyone bear the burden of carrying a picture ID to vote, but we can make them bear that burden to get on an airplane.

This is the ACLU and the NAACP helping Democrats to stuff the ballot box. As if the Democrats on the election boards cant do that on their own.

I worked the polls in PA where we were told to ask for I.D. as a dress rehearsal for November.

A couple people said it was a stupid law as they listed the individuals who would not have I.D.

Most of the complaints we got - and some of the people were really, really angry - were about the number of phone calls people were getting from candidates...not about having to show I.D.

The fundamental connection between proving who you are, and performing an activity that by its nature requires you to be who you say you are, is simply discarded as burdensome and/or irrelevant by the enemy.

I can’t believe voter ID is even being debated; when people list the things you DO need an ID for, voting should be beyond debate.

How do all of these people without ID do any of those things? They never rent a car, motel room, etc.?

I'm pretty sure dead people never do those things.

True; what about the felons and illegal invaders that don’t want to be turned away?

Here in NJ these illegals have turned whole motels into boarding houses; they don’t just rent motel rooms, they’re in long-term agreements!

Good point; again, I can’t believe any politician can stand up and oppose voter ID laws - they are instantly suspect to me.

The State should offer to provide Photo IDs at the polling places at the time of voting.
Just bring a piece of mail from a Bank, Utility Co. or Government Agency with your name and address and or some other form of ID and presto. You'll get a Photo Id and you can vote.
And they can't complain that it's too much trouble to travel to get the ID, since they traveled to go vote.

I worked the polls in PA where we were told to ask for I.D. as a dress rehearsal for November.

I'm a poll watcher in the general election and Voter ID is something we've been screaming for, for years but until the pubbies got control of Harrisburg there was no chance.

When I voted {for Newt} last week the ladies at the poll said that they had 100% approval for the law and most people said it's about time.

There are no disadvantaged folks in the precinct that I vote and even the poor old people that don't drive, managed to get the FREE picture ID cards.

I can't see this aclu gambit working in PA, because the law allows a provisional ballot for those that "forget" their ID card, with up to 6 days to then provide it.

They need to be accused, loudly, and to their faces, in every possible media outlet,

of wanting to commit voter fraud, of disenfranchising legitimate votes with fraudulent votes.

Really?

I hadn't heard of a death penalty for attempted voter fraud.

Seriesly, doesn't anybody know what draconian means?

If you need ID for purchasing alcohol, tobacco, cashing a check, going through security at the airport, using a credit card over a certain amount, then there is no hardship about having to have an ID to vote. The only thing it discriminates against is illegal voting.

This needs to be stated directly at them:

“Sir, considering all the activities that require a photo ID and your lack of protest in those situations,

there is no other conclusion concerning your opposition to voter ID than that you desire fraudulent voting.

You’re a democrat, right? Thought so.”

I just want them to produce one person who hasn't.....
1. Rented a car.
2. Cashed a check.
3. Bought alcohol
4. Rented a room.
5. Applied for assistance.
6. Applied for credit
7. Boarded a plane.

Plz add to the list.

Even my disabled little brother has a photo ID for benefits and services.

You need an ID to register for college. What can be more fundamental than seeking an education yet you must provide proof of Id. Is the commie ACLU going to file a lawsuit for that.

Re: calling this measure ‘draconian’

Wondering if they understood the meaning of the word was my first thought, too. Makes you wonder how these people’s ancestors survived actual hardship and discomfort, you know? They sure bred a bunch of ninnies.

If I were the elected body of Pennsylvania, my response would be to initiate the same background check and paperwork for voting as buying a gun.

After all, the ACLU supports the NICS check for exercising your Constitutional Right to own a firearm, how can they not support it for your Constitutional Right to vote?

When I went to vote on Tuesday they asked to see my photo ID. Instead of showing them my driver’s license I pulled out my carry permit. No one else had done that but they accepted it. From now on whenever I am asked for ID I will use it.

Seems you need to add “applied for disability benefits or services” to your list.

Indeed. These fraudsters haven’t EVER produced someone that couldn’t vote because of lack of ID, much less someone who hasn’t done at least one of the things on your list.

They’ll try to show that decreased voter turnout among democrats is “proof” of disenfranchisement, when indeed it is simply proof of former election fraud.

Ballsy of you. But it is a valid, state issued ID with your photo on it. And further, it is testimony that you are an upstanding citizen with no crimes in your past.

My question for Republican state people is “Why don’t you pass a law that looks like the one the Supreme Court approved??” !!! Then every judge in America could be called to answer if it has already been approved why are you taking another bit out of the apple?

The one group that did have an issue here in Pa. were the Amish voters. They do not carry ID and probably have never performed items on that list. I’m not sure what provisions will be made...but you can bet it’s being worked..

He says time of the essence, because if the law is not overturned, thousands of Pennsylvania voters could be disenfranchised.

This assertion is utter nonsense! The person who said this should be fined and jailed if he cannot support his claim that "voters" will be "disenfranchised" by the requirement that they have voter ID.

Without voter ID anyone can vote again and again, at any age. How can this even be an issue unless put forth by someone with a seriously disordered mind.

HOW can there be a political solution to our problems, when the powers that be seek VOTE FRAUD at every turn? On Nov 6th, how can we be sure that Obama WASN'T re-elected? He will be counting the votes in a foreign country. The secretaries of state, most of them, have gotten elected with Soros money.

For these and other reasons, I no longer believe there is a political solution to our problems. I believe we are looking at a full-scale civil war, whether Obama or Romney is elected in November.

I worked the polls in PA where we were told to ask for I.D. as a dress rehearsal for November

The pending law was well publicized in my county, including the dress rehearsal, nevertheless the workers at my polling place were rather demanding "I need to see a photo ID".

While I fully support the law at its effective date, my calm reply was, "With all due respect, ma'am, you will see it in November when the law takes effect--not today".

That caused a bit of a ruckus for "refusing" to show that which is not yet required!

They can obtain an identifcation card from the DOT without a photograph (which will be valid for the purpose of this law) if they sign an affadavit of religious objection.

A good vestige of the legacy of William Penn's "holy experiment".
