Obama and the bin Laden Bragging Rights

Michael Mukasey:

Obama and the bin Laden Bragging Rights

It's hard to imagine Lincoln or Eisenhower claiming such credit for the heroic actions of others.

By MICHAEL B. MUKASEY

The first anniversary of the SEAL Team 6 operation that killed Osama bin Laden brings the news that President Obama plans during the coming campaign to exploit the bragging rights to the achievement. That plan invites scrutiny that is unlikely to benefit him.

Consider the events surrounding the operation. A recently disclosed memorandum from then-CIA Director Leon Panetta shows that the president's celebrated derring-do in authorizing the operation included a responsibility-escape clause: "The timing, operational decision making and control are in Admiral McRaven's hands. The approval is provided on the risk profile presented to the President. Any additional risks are to be brought back to the President for his consideration. The direction is to go in and get bin Laden and if he is not there, to get out."

Which is to say, if the mission went wrong, the fault would be Adm. McRaven's, not the president's. Moreover, the president does not seem to have addressed at all the possibility of seizing material with intelligence value—which may explain his disclosure immediately following the event not only that bin Laden was killed, but also that a valuable trove of intelligence had been seized, including even the location of al Qaeda safe-houses. That disclosure infuriated the intelligence community because it squandered the opportunity to exploit the intelligence that was the subject of the boast.

This morning, Sen. John McCain said on Fox News (I’m paraphrasing), “I have had the privilege of working with heroes. Heroes don’t brag.”

Does someone have the side-by-side posting of President Bush’s statement on Saddam’s capture and zero’s statement on bin Laden’s capture?

Frankly, the word on the street in Pakistan is that the reason we never saw Osama’s body is that Osama was never there.

Of course, the word on the street in Pakistan is always subject to considerable skepticism. But, observers point out the following:

* There was never an unusual traffic coming in and out of the compound that would have indicated someone important holding up there.

* There were no guards posted at points around the compound that would have aroused suspicion.

* In a country notorious for loose lips sinking ships, no one ever hinted at any unusual activity or presence at the compound — though even lower-level officials would have had to have some knowledge.

* Osama was said to have been a very sick man, likely in need of continual dialysis — yet there was never any indication of him coming out for hospital visits, or doctors going in on a regular basis.

* Though Pakistan is full of Osama supporters, there was no massive public outcry against the US “invasion” — and the Pakistanis love to take to the streets.

All circumstantial to be sure. But, faced with choosing between believing the Pakistanis and Barack Obama, it is a toss-up at best.

I still think Obama made a deal with somebody in AQ. They gave him Bin Laden, and Obama gave them Libya.

"I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority . . . even as I continued our broader effort. . . . Then, after years of painstaking work by my intelligence community I was briefed . . . I met repeatedly with my national security team . . . And finally last week I determined that I had enough intelligence to take action. . . . Today, at my direction . . ."

I am struck by the repetitive use of "my" in this excerpt. These are the words of someone who sees himself as a ruler, not a president.

This ought to be the RNC and Romney mantra EVERY TIME the MSM goes that route:

“Osama Bin Ladin was the easiest foreign policy decision of Obama’s presidency.”

The table was set. All he had to do was pull up a chair and wait to be served.

End of Story.

If you think that the I, me, my, mine might be just a tad overused by Lord Obama, just wait 30 or 30 years and see how the “Killing Osama” story is told.

One of two ways:
1) Obama bravely parachuted into Pakistan and took out Bin Laden single handed. Like a modern black Rambo.
or
2) US Navy Seal team in an operation as audacious as the Doolittle Raid, took out the number one terrorist in the world.

Which story is told will be determined by whether Obama can complete his transformation of the United States into a Banana Republic.

“Saying the zer0bama regime took down Bin Laden...

You can’t give the credit to Kennedy or Johnson. The program could have been scrapped in Nixon’s first budget.

How's that working out? I say give credit where credit is due.

OBAMA USING ROMNEY AS A CLINTON SURROGATE
Is Obama using the swipes he seems to be taking at Romney to get back at Clinton ?
While it may appear that Obama is accusing Romney of being weak there is a former democratic president who “passed” on knocking off OBL and it was Clinton.
Clinton was informed that Osama was discovered to be in a desert area by the CIA but Clinton reportedly had nixed the attempt to “take him out” .

Whether Obama expected Romney to mention this in his response but instead mentioned Carter when this accusation was aired in a camapign ad. It may have been forgotten by the Romney people .

But Clinton’s pass on knocking off the 911 mastermind would not be forgotten by the very thin skinned Obama which may also hint at the growing dissatisfaction with the poor performance of Obama as President within Democratic ranks.
