FALMOUTH, Mass. -- Roughly 1,000 people filled Falmouth's Town Hall green Monday evening to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in unison.
The outpouring was spurred by outrage over a decision last Monday by Melissa Freitag, Vice Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, not to say the pledge at the weekly meeting.
As acting chairman, Freitag started last Monday night's meeting with a poem, then went on to say she'd "rather not" say the pledge. She then quickly moved on to the night's business.
Fellow selectmen later told NewsCenter 5 that they were caught off guard by Freitag's exclusion of the pledge, since she was on the board 2 1/2 years ago when the board voted that the board would start each meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.
At the time, Freitag was the sole vote against saying it. Many who gathered on the Falmouth green called Freitag's actions "unpatriotic."
Others argued that as an elected official who took an oath, she should have left her personal opinion at home. "She's under oath and the Board of Selectmen made it a policy that they say the Pledge of Allegiance. She ignored policy and ignored her oath," said Ted Theis, a Vietnam veteran.
Dick Bolduc, a Korean War veteran, said "substituting the pledge with a poem? Give me a break! People spilled good blood for that flag."
Monday night, Freitag did join the rest of the selectmen on the Town Hall green to recite the pledge. She did not, however, say the words "under God."
She again omitted those words once back inside Town Hall, when she stood for the pledge at the selectmen's meeting.

The real victims are the chumps who believe it. Say, do you know the history of the pledge? Interesting story; you should check it out.
“I can only assume its that she has a (D) next to her name....”
Are you insinuating that the “D” stands for Dumb?
This one seems much too bitter to be a serious commie. I’m guessing Uncle Sam’s military is perceived to have taken one of its family members or to have caused some personal strife, etc.
And for whatever it’s worth...

All other countries in the world seem to need a flag to rally ‘round, why not fly ours highest and be proud of it and our God?
After all, the muslim/leftist freaks are fond of telling us that their god is the same as the Christian God.
Thanks massmike.
