CHEYENNECall it the Fake Quake of 2012.
The U.S. Geological Survey announced Monday morning that their automated sensors picked up a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck shortly after 10 a.m. about 24 miles northwest of Green River.
But that came as a surprise to the locals. Residents in Farson, the nearest town to the supposed epicenter, said they hadn't felt a thing. The Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office said exactly zero people had called local authorities to report the earth shaking.
As it turned out, the supposed earthquake was really an amplified echo of an unusually large mine blast located at the other end of the state, about 18 miles south of Gillette, said Julie Dutton, a Golden, Colo.-based USGS geophysicist. That blast registered 3.0 on the Richter scale, Dutton said a force equals to 32 tons of TNT.
The vibrations were picked up 400 miles away by automated seismographs at the University of Utah. As per usual policy, it was automatically registered on the USGS website, but the log entry was removed about an hour later after a seismographer double-checked the data.

Tinfoil hat time!.....lol
Here is a link to the 4.9 from today that is still being reported by the EMSC however the USGS has removed it from their quake list.
Now the issue is yesterday’s as per the article was blamed on a rogue mine blast that could not be attributed to any known operation. Wonder what they will call it now?....lol
They'll call it The Butterfly Effect, of course.
Yes darn miners with 39+ tons of tnt under reporting their blasts....lol One starts and they all jump in....lol
Well that settles that one. The USGS reposted it as a legit quake.

Guess they could not find a miner...lol
Sure seems like an extra ordinary number of weird occurances lately, the booming sounds and now this at 0' of depth. If I were a local USGS guy, I'd seen a team out to have a look around.
Heads up on a Super New Moon if you didn't know about it. The last one was in March of last year and I don't have to tell you what happened in March of last year. :)
'Supermoon' Alert: Biggest Full Moon of 2012 Occurs This Week
At perigee, the moon will exert about 42 percent more tidal force than it will during its next apogee two weeks later,
This might not be a bad time for those living in California to review their emergency preparations.
The North and South ends of the Juan de Fuca plate have been busy last couple days. One each end, one hour apart this morning.
Yeah I have seen that and it’s sister the Cocos has been weak as well.
