Santorum wants promises from Romney before backing
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | May 1, 2012 | Philip Elliott

WASHINGTON — Rick Santorum wants to ensure the GOP's policy platform represents conservatives' interests. Newt Gingrich wants help retiring his campaign debt and repairing his reputation.

Both Republicans are expected to endorse their former rival Mitt Romney — and signal to their backers to fall in line behind the party's presumptive nominee — but each wants assurances that Romney will deliver for them. Neither is rushing toward the task.

Meanwhile, it doesn't appear that Rep. Ron Paul of Texas is going to go that way. Paul is still in the race and hasn't yet recognized Romney as the party's nominee. The tea party favorite and former Libertarian presidential nominee seems unlikely to endorse given deep differences with Romney on economic and foreign policy issues.

Romney plans to meet Santorum on Friday and Gingrich plans to endorse him this week, an end-of-primary dance that happens every four years once the party settles on a nominee.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, quit the race April 10 but has stopped short of publicly embracing Romney as the GOP's standard bearer after a bitter primary season that featured Santorum calling Romney "the worst Republican in the country" to run against Obama.

~SNIP~

....people close to Santorum said, he wants assurances from Romney that the party's platform would represent conservatives' interests, and that Romney would govern as a conservative.

Unlike Gingrich, Santorum also doesn't need Romney's help to retire campaign debt.

Rick is helping to set up the “force Mitt to act like a conservative president or be primaried out on his ass in 2016” campaign.

It's all we got cuz if it ain't Mitt it's Obama and we gotta try to convince anti-Romney conservatives that Mitt will behave and if not, perish politically.

Cuz God help us all if the now simple socialist but at heart hard line COMMUNIST wins because we have prideful and petulant conservative rubberheads refusing to support the GOP nominee.

Of all the complaints about Mitt, few have been that he committed any kind of business fraud. I mean I hate to praise by faint damnation, but look at the kinds of financial shenanigans that virtually everyone in the Obama clowder is neck deep in. Policy flip flops, yes and that is extremely worrisome. We know what Barack Obama policy will be and it’s a promise of hell.

Clearly, we should vote for Obama?

WE? What was your position on this homosexual activist Romney hired?

Clearly you should vote your conscience. I vote principles; in my opinion, man love (cult of personality) and useful idiotness that is either unprincipled or principle compromising is the domain reserved for the 0boz0bots and the Romneybots.

Excuse me but just what “repairing” does Newt Gingrich need to his reputation?? I didn’t read any further than that.

I tend to agree with you and would suggest Newt Gingrich would be head and shoulders above, a conservative alternative to, RINO Romney. Anyway, you would have to ask the author of the article, Philip Elliott, that question as I have no clue.

So, I guess it’s Virgil. That way Obama gets only 1/2 my vote.

Great. Just bash one of the conservatives. Real great. Another one is leaving the race tomorrow on my birthday no less. Seriously stop bashing the candidates who stepped up to the plate and bash the idiot Romney who is the worst candidate in history. Yep even worse than McCain who at least served his country.

I have been voting principles for 50 years and our country goes over the falls faster each day. I wonder how much luck you have had voting for what you thought were principled representatives. I would think you batting average is not so great. After uncovering that Obama is in office based on some forgeries, I find nearly 100% of my principled reps say he was born in HI because the forgery says so and besides it is not much of an issue. As a side note, I cannot bring Newt or Rick back or Michelle either although I supported all 3. So, Virgil is an option, but we all know he will not replace either Rino Romney or Ozero.

Newt Gingrich, the fiscal conservative who private jetted his way into over 4 million in debt during what has to have been one of the most unprofessional presidential campaigns/wife's children's book tour in modern times.

Cuz God help us all if the now simple socialist but at heart hard line COMMUNIST wins because we have prideful and petulant conservative rubberheads refusing to support the GOP nominee.

You say prideful, I say principled.

So let's see this winning platform......I should vote for Romney because he supports abortion just like 0.

I should vote for Romney because he supports fag "marriage" just like 0.

I should vote for Romney because he is a tax and spend liberal just like 0.

I should vote for Romeny because he created the blueprint for 0's socialized medicine.

Man, you're right....just look at what a stark contrast Romneybama is. Man, I just swell up with pride.

Romney supporters are what Stalin called "useful idiots." If you put a bicycle in the garage, that doesn't magically make it a car. If you elect a NE liberal because there is an "R" after his name, that doesn't magically make him conservative.

I swear, so many wishy-washy RINOs are like abused spouses. They swear in their mind that "next time I'll leave," and then they get smacked around again and so they fall over backwards to defend their abuser. Lemme guess, Romney only does liberal things because he loves us. It's our fault, we push him to it. He works hard, and we just get in his way. He did promise to not do it again.

-To all you romneybots out there, don't worry, I'll respect you in the morning too.

Promises that he’ll be VP (which I think was pre-arranged, but Romney, who never keeps his deals, is now looking elsewhere).

I read that he’s looking at Rob Portman from Ohio (another RINO).

The sickening thing, of course, is that several large states haven’t even had their primaries yet, but Romney is already the winner. Disgusting.

Phase 4 - Impeach Romney at the first offense thus placing a conservative in the oval office.

Sorry, any plan that involves voting for Romney is a non-starter. Besides, Phase 4 is a ludicrous impossibility.

My feeling is that the best we can hope for now is solid Republican majorities in the House and Senate and weak Obama re-elected with a plurality of the vote due to a conservative third party contender.

A strong conservative third party contender has three good effects:

1.) It will cause Romney to lose.

2.) It serve as a punch in the face to the GOP-e.

3.) It will bring out otherwise apathetic conservatives to help down-ticket Republicans to win.

That's a pretty serious accusation. Care to provide any...you know...actual evidence?
