Authorities find $1 million in cash stashed in storage unit rented by Navy Vets' Thompson
Tampa Bay - St. Petersburg Times ^ | May 3, 2012 | Kris Hundley

Federal agents seeking clues about Bobby Thompson's true identity got a warrant to search a storage locker in Oregon on Wednesday and found two suitcases packed with about $1 million in cash.

U.S. marshals who tracked down the fugitive believe it is money Thompson collected as part of a sham charity operation he ran for years in Tampa. His charity, U.S. Navy Veterans Association, reported collecting millions of dollars from across the nation in the name of needy veterans.

Also stashed in the Portland storage unit were boxes full of birth certificates, credit reports and other personal information needed to steal the identities of dozens of unsuspecting people.......

......When agents arrested Thompson on Monday night in Portland as he was returning home from a bar, he was carrying three wallets, all with different identification papers. It was under one of those stolen identities, Alan Lacy, that he had rented a storage unit in the 100 block of Belmont NE in Portland. It was there that agents discovered the cash and stolen personal information Wednesday evening.

Elliott said Thompson had stayed on the move. While in the Northeast, he started another charity, the Plymouth Rock Society of Christian Pilgrims. But he managed to stay one step ahead of the law by changing identities.

The storage unit with the cash and piles of personal information had been arranged using the name of a former firefighter in New Mexico.......

I’ve always wondered how one would go about setting up a real veteran’s charity. I’m guessing there’s some involved paperwork and IRS red tape.

... I’ve been told that elected officials have automatic security clearances, and their background information doesn’t matter anymore ...

What a fabulous name. Flawless.

It could be improved only by adding “and apple pie eaters”.

It’s not hard at all and the paperwork is the same as any other non-profit thus one should be very careful donating to veterans charities to be sure they are legitimate.

The Vietnam Veterans of America is a complete scam and very little of the proceeds make it to veterans.

The Wounded Warrior Project is one of the best and is the charity I support.

VVA is a lefty group and always has been. I was a veteran’s representative at the state unemployment office for about 17 years and helped thousands find work, from down the street to Saudi Arabia, from ditchdigger to CEO.

That's only true of the president, since he is the final authority. Or at least that was the way it worked when I was in military intelligence. I remember President Carter revealing some details on our spy satellites that were code word, but of course he didn't get into any trouble. Who knows what President Clinton and the current occupant have ginned up.

Wounded Warriors & Homes for our Troops are my favorites.
The money they found should go to help our vets.

I used to support them until they pissed me off. I’ve been offering free guided deer hunts to wounded veterans for many years. 5 years ago I was asked by a WW rep out of Abilene if I would take a 4 man group for a deer hunt on my place and I agreed. About a week before the hunt I was contacted by another rep who told me that the men who were coming to hunt and who I thought were wounded servicemen were actually two reps from WW and a couple of buddies, one of them had never been in the service. I canceled their hunt and rounded up four young vets from Midland and Odessa and we had a hell of a good weekend hunt. I’m not saying their all like that but that bunch from Abilene sure soured my bread. Just to brag a little but I now have 6 flags incased with certificates of authenticity that have been presented to me by past vets who have hunted my place. I’m deeply honored and extremely proud of them and those who serve under them.

Its probably that you not know, It would just get your B/P jacked up to the danger point. I wouldn’t trust either one of them to take out the garbage.

I just don’t know why people will play the lottery and yet avoid jury duty. Just imagine being called up for THIS trial?

Oh, we have a winner!
