This Week, It's the Aaron's 499 at Talladega!
![]() Click for Nascar race & news threads at FR Race Menu for the weekend series Talladega Superspeedway Track History On an unassuming stretch of land suited for soybean farming located next to a couple of abandoned airport runways, crews constructed the biggest superspeedway in NASCAR, Talladega Superspeedway. Since Alabama International Motor Speedway (as it was called until 1989) opened its gates in September 1969, the track has surpassed every initial expectation. Talladega, Ala., emerged as the top choice among several possible sites in the Southeast, with the main criteria for selection being availability of land, access to the interstate system and a population base of at least 20 million people within 300 miles. Anniston insurance executive Bill Ward, a race driver and fan himself, helped NASCAR and International Speedway Corporation founder William H.G. (Bill) France find the land in Alabama, following a casual conversation with France in Daytona in the mid-1960s. Ward found what he thought was the perfect site in north Talladega County near an airport that the U.S. Government had sold to the City of Talladega after World War II. He set up a meeting with then-Talladega mayor James Hardwick and other city officials, and in a restaurant in Anniston in 1966, France got the group to consider the idea of putting a major track on the site. After a trip to the Firecracker 400 in Daytona to observe first-hand the potential economic impact, the group was sold. ![]() FRFL'ers - Deadline to select your drivers is May 5 2:00am PDT |

Would you please add me to your NASCAR ping list.
I won't be upset if Jr. finally wins one but I'll still be pulling for Tony. Love NASCAR.
Where is the race this weekend?
you got it, Welcome aboard!
I been sitting Smoke the last few weeks, he was on a mighty fine roll, Junior is overdue to say the least.. and yaknow JJ and Flipper and Flash Gordon are itching to get it done!
and Denny and Matt and HaPPy Harvick done pretty good too so far.
Cheboygan, Wisconsin. if you leave now , you’ll catch last call at the track bar.
Oops, Cheboygan is in Michigan.
Darn Norm... looks like you beat me to the track bar.
beating you is not a bad trick coming from an old country miler in high school.. me that is.
did you know you can pay over 10K for a lawn mowing tractor?
and all the accessories.. hole diggers, blades, wifi..
looks like we skirted the moisture here, temps are set to rise, weeds to grow. now if we can skirt the rain in Dega this week-end.
I hate the restrictor plate race predictions!
I am just about ready to flush Eureka and move to Carmel by the Sea. The only thing growing here right now are snails and slugs.
Carmel is nice and lush.. great beaches, dog friendly.. wish we could afford it..
We got drizzled on a bit last night,, headed for the 80s in a day or two.. poool weather
I hear ya.. I updated my picks witha keen eye, I need to stop the point slide now.. a 375 would be nice about now and most welcome.. ;-)
A 375! I have a 375 H&H Magnum.
Since I used to live in Carmel and once was one of their finest to wear the badge and blue......I know where all the good coffee and donut shops are - and the best watering holes too.
Our dogs strollered along with us last year on a day trip, great place to visit, I bag lots of pastries when I can, we always hit the hogs breath, dogs like the food there and me too.
Spyglass, not Pebble is the toughest golf course I have ever played. Those homes surrounding and on Spyglass are awesome.
TMI!!!
Looking Good!!
Clint Eastwood owns the Hogs Breath Inn and the little sculpture shop next door, owned by Malcolm Marand, was featured in Eastwood’s movie “Play Misty for Me”. (My ex-wife was an extra in that movie but that’s another story) Eastwood ran for mayor of Carmel because the city council wouldn’t give him an exception to the sign dimensions authorized by city code. Eastwood won, changed the code & got his larger sign for the Hog’s Breath. True story: I was making an arrest after a traffic stop in front of the H.B. (the guy had an outstanding warrant) and while hand-cuffing the guy I hear a voice behind me say “you need a hand with that?” - I turned around and it was Clint - met a lot of celebrities and hollywood types in Carmel and have too many stories that I shouldn’t tell.
Watched the last 40 laps of the ARCA race last night. Larry McReynolds son won after several hellacious wrecks.
I had a similar experience when the same Cops stopped me for a DUI... 3 times... in the same night. It was after a Christmas Party in 1956.
Someone tell ST that Flash is on the Pole for tomorrow...
That 1st qualifying lap pulled a fast one didn’t it?
Doesn’t mean much at Dega, but fun anyway.
I missed most of the qualifying.
I had it on in the workshop.
Gordon did a low tight lap on #1, everybody else went high and wide.
It worked, he said it was based on the cooling system.
Hard hit by #14...
and I was moving 19 tons of # 9 Compost most of the afternoon...
I dumped a load of rubbish this morning and moved some dirt around. I also caught parts of the race, they had a few red flag delays, air-vac’d a driver.. we’ll see what sunday brings..
and I haven’t checked my points yet.. uhhh.. 6.
You must have cheated!!! I got 1 stinky point, by my C driver no less. unnnnng as my former FRiend used to say.
every driver of mine was in the top 20. a bad omen perhaps..
I could really use a big points day.. I feeel like flipper .. screwpled..
So that is where it all went.
Next: Cup Series race from Talladega
Kyle Busch will try to notch his second consecutive Cup win, as he takes on the field and the game of pack racing at ‘Dega at 1:20 p.m. ET.
It's the Kyle Busch show!...:oP
Early morning rain has delayed the start of the race at Talladega. Green flag has been moved to 2:05 p.m. ET. Follow all the action with Live Leaderboard.

11:55 a.m. ET — Jet dryers are on the track, and because of that, this is hereby declared a Juan Montoya joke-free zone.
8:03 a.m. ET — The track is getting pounded by a thunderstorm for the moment, but clouds are expected to decrease by the start of the race. It’s going to be a hot one, with temperatures forecast for the high 80s.
7:31 a.m. ET — Jeff Gordon was once called Wonder Boy, and now he’s Old Man River. Jeff Gordon’s top qualfiying effort for the Aaron’s 499 marked the 20th straight season he’d won a Cup pole position. That ties NASCAR Hall of Fame member David Pearson for the longest such streak in history.
It’s the 71st pole of Gordon’s career, third on the all-time list.
Alongside Gordon on the front row will be AJ Allmendinger, followed by Marcos Ambrose, Aric Almirola and Kasey Kahne in the top five. Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip and Matt Kenseth are sixth through 10th.
J.J. Yeley failed to qualify for the event.
awesome racin last nite and for me....WAY TO GO Danika
I don’t know. they sure are giving JJ a lot of camera time.
I was going to work in my shop but with the delay I’ll have to stick around and make sure my PVR records all of it.
I recorded the ARCA race and the Nationwide. The track is definitely living up to its reputation, it will be a good race unless it turns into a race of attrition.

I’ve got to order Dale Jr’s “Cinco de Mayo” diecast that he drove yesterday. The #5 Hellman’s Mayonnaise Chevy Impala. Awesome. What a way to celebrate “Cinco de Mayo”. I sure wish he could have won that race.
LOVE it :)
