A United Nations investigator probing discrimination against Native Americans has called on the US government to return some of the land stolen from Indian tribes as a step toward combatting continuing and systemic racial discrimination. James Anaya, the UN special rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, said no member of the US Congress would meet him as he investigated the part played by the government in the considerable difficulties faced by Indian tribes.

In almost every thread that has anything to do with American Indians, there is always one or two people that bring up that before the White Man came the tribes were waring and killing each other anyway. There is a big difference, though, in that and what the Whites did.

The white people called them blood thirsty, godless savages among other things and decided to tame them with guns and bibles, put them in concentration camps "for their own protection" while they took their lands and opened them up to white settlers. Now here is the difference: If indeed the Indians were godless blood thirsty savages and killing their neighbors for land and dominance, that was a way of life that they always knew WHEREAS the White man was civilized , had God and supposedly a moral civilization. The conclusion to me is the White sin was a thousand times worse than what the Indians have always done in time immemorial.

Well how do the various “ tribes” give back land they stole from other tribes?

When Lewis and Clark found the Sioux living on the middle reaches of the Missouri River, it was because the Ojibway were sitting on the ancestral Sioux lands north of the Great Lakes, having driven the Sioux out to starve. They would have, too, except for their discovery of the horse and the High Plains buffalo herds.

Without reading the replies, I'm probably late to the party. If not, let's make a list of lands stolen going all the way back to when homo sapiens took territory from the Neanderthals and include those who deserve reparations for conquest. Not being a history expert, I'll start in no certain order and hopefully got most right. Feel free to correct me or add to the list:

1. England owes Scotland and Ireland;
2. Romans owe the known world of the time;
3. Egyptians owe the Israelites (Jews);
4. England owes just about everyone during its reign;
5. Germany owes much of Europe, USA, parts of Africa, and Russia;
6. Japan owes much of Asia and the USA;
7. Persia owes Greece;
8. Mongols owe central Asia and eastern Europe;
9. France owes Britain and much of Europe;
10. Spain owes the Aztecs and parts of Europe;
11. Apaches owe the Navajos.
12. Navajo owe the Sioux;
13. Sioux owe the Cherokee and take it east...
14. Mexico owes indian natives;
15. Russia owes countries of the Soviet Bloc;
16. China owes parts of Asia;
17. Ottoman Empire owes central Asia and eastern Europe;
18. Eastern Europe owes each other;
19. Vikings owe Newfoundland and parts of Scandinavia;
20. Many African nations owe each other;
21. Many European nations owe African nations;
22. Italians owe the Allied countries;
23. Middle East nations owe each other;

Really? How far back do we have to go? When homo sapiens left their caves to fight with other homo sapiens? At what point to we declare that conquest is over and the lines of nations are now drawn and live with it (except for the rare few)?

Much of what you describe are actions carried out by the Federal Gooberment and a range of self-serving politicians. The reservation system? Thank Uncle Fed for that. Trail of Tears? Thank that genocidal fascist Andrew Jackson. Even now, the Feds treat American Indians like children.

If you think the Comanche suffered overmuch at the hands of the Scots-Irish, perhaps you should read what the Scots-Irish had done to the Irish. As the saying went, when the Scots-Irish first landed in Ireland, "They fell on their knees and prayed to God. Then they fell on the natives, and preyed on them."

You argue that the Red men did as they had always done. So did the white man -- ask anyone who teaches European and Asian history. Ask any Zulu, ask any Turk or Arab. Siege of Acre, anyone? -- that was pretty stringent. Or are we just talking massacres? Five or six in Ireland alone, in a 600-year span ending 250 years ago. Which is about when the "puttings down" in Scotland, by the English, ended. And don't forget the hundreds of thousands of Cypriot pagans put to death by the Arabs in the 9th century, or the millions of Hindus killed by the caliphs and sharifs. Your average Arab imam or sharif wouldn't even get out of bed on a day when he didn't feel up to killing 20,000 Hindus.

Depends on the tirbes in question, no? Some tribes were focused on agriculture and inhabited a fixed area. Some tribes were very nomadic. Some peaceful and some would make scare the crap out of a Conquistador. There is a big difference between, for example, the Zuni and the Comanche. One can no more lump together all American Indians any more than one can lump together all Europeans.
