GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) — They knelt in prayer, ignored the judge and wouldn't listen to Arabic translations as they confronted nearly 3,000 counts of murder. The self-proclaimed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks and four co-defendants defiantly disrupted an arraignment that dragged into Saturday night in the opening act of the long-stalled effort to prosecute them in a military court.
It wasn't until more than seven hours into the hearing that prosecutors at the U.S. military base in Cuba began reading the charges against the men, including 2,976 counts of murder and terrorism in the 2001 attacks that sent hijacked jetliners into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the admitted 9/11 architect, and the four men accused of aiding the 9/11 conspiracy put off their pleas until a later date. Lawyers were still discussing trial dates Saturday night; another hearing was set for June 12.
Earlier, Mohammed cast off his earphones providing Arabic translations of the proceeding and refused to answer Army Col. James Pohl's questions or acknowledge he understood them. All five men refused to participate in the hearing; two passed around a copy of The Economist magazine and leafed through the articles.

Cheryl Bormann, a civilian attorney for bin Attash, appeared in a conservative Islamic outfit that left only her face uncovered and she asked the court to order other women present to wear "appropriate" clothing so that defendants do not have to avert their eyes "for fear of committing a sin under their faith."

Think it is total BS that a US citizen should give ANY consideration to these devils. What about the sin of killing 3000 people?
And who don't see anything wrong with forcing Catholic doctors and nurses to kill babies.
All it will take is a tiny misstep in FISA wiretaps or similar evidence mistakes and they walk.
The comparison that pops to mind is the first O. J. trial. I hope this judge has a bigger set of stones than Lance Ito.
Whatever happened to a quick contempt of court ruling? If they refuse to participate in their trial, they have waived their right to self-defense.
Our providing a stage for their circus only enhances their influence where we need it the least.

And Cheryl Bormann is concerned about them sinning by looking at the prosecuting attorneys in military uniforms. Incredible that she wants them to cover their head for these murderers.

A fundamental problem with our society today, is that we’ve allowed, in the short space of about 50 years, a relative handful of people to destroy our cherished institutions, basic morality, and foundational ability to render judgments.
A list of examples would take all night, and still be imcomplete.
That said, it looks like this will be a long trial and a frustrating one with these attorneys not only representing these terrorists but their religion.

At Carnival, when people get ****ed they enjoy it.
I can understand the defense attorneys defending their clients - that’s their ethical duty. But what’s going on here is the difference between defending an accused Nazi and defending Nazism.
Call me stupid, but it seems to me that if the scum defendants are provided earphone translators, but refuse to use them, they continue to be represented by their lawyers who understand English; thus they are properly represented by a person who understands the charges and the testimonies.
Proceed with the trial, and if necessary take out the trash that is interfering, as they are fully represented by English speaking lawyers. If they decide to quietly stay, or watch proceedings on a remote TV, fine!
(Somehow, I feel that the name Erik Holder will surface in the news within a few days.)
I’d put ‘em in isolation booths with translation feeds. If nothing else, it might help with the smell.
