Was this a prank or a terrorist attack or just plain incompetence? Who would use hydrogen to fill balloons for decoration at a public event?

I don’t know, I’d want to say this was intentional, since why would someone fill ballons with a flamable gas when inert Helium will do the same effect.

However I just don’t know.

Great. Anyone read comments at the link? I normally don’t read YouTube comments, because I have found the people who post comments on YouTube have serious intellectual deficiencies, but even that was pretty low.

Helium is expensive.

Seems to be a gap in the video - what was the ignition source?

Shouldn’t the normal Armenian response be to blame the Turks?

"...Shouldn’t the normal logical Armenian response be to blame the Turks?"

If you read some of the responses at that link you would know what I mean.

The US has the world’s largest helium reserve, outside of Amarillo, but it’s being depleted rapidly:

I’m sure it’s quite expensive outside the US, and the prices have gone up significantly over the last several years.

There is always somebody looking to shave a buck off his overhead. But I always wondered why instead of using expensive helium in weather balloons we didn’t use cheap and plentiful hydrogen.

Weather ballons are launched by NWS offices, which aren’t exactly industrial facilities where people are experts in handling flammable materials - it’s probably more of a hassle to safely store the hydrogen than it is worth.

I’ve always thought we should declare ourself OHEC (Organization of Helium Exporting Country) and then use Helium embargos to drive up the price and bend foreign countries dependent on helium to our will.

First Armenia, tomorrow the world! They shall see the consequences of our wrath.
