Missing: $400 purse holding $800 cash, plus food stamp cards
Human Events ^ | 5-7-12 | John Hayward

A traveling friend sent me an item clipped from a Georgia newspaper that reads, in its entirety:

A woman said she noticed her purse missing from her car just before 5 P.M. Sunday. The car was parked at her residence on Hornet Drive. The woman said the car had been locked, and the purse was in the back seat.

The purse was valued at $400, her wallet was valued at $200, and she said there was $800 cash in the purse, according to the police report. Also missing were the woman’s food stamp cards.

The sad part is that the food stamp cards were probably worth more than the purse, wallet, and cash.

It bears repeating, as both a critique and a warning of things to come, that the great project of the American Left involves teaching the middle class to think of itself as “poor.” That way, they’ll vote themselves into servitude. The impoverished mind has no use for talk of economic liberty. It values “hope,” which is passive and servile, over “opportunity.”

It has often been observed that the American definition of poverty is remarkably elastic. The most pervasive threat to the health of our poor is obesity. For many, the dollar value of welfare benefits far exceeds the income from an entry-level job – which has far-reaching harmful effects on the general economy, as it distorts the supply, and therefore value, of labor.

The value of welfare has actually exceeded more than just entry-level paychecks. The Heritage Foundation recently published a report showing “the average individual who relies on Washington could receive benefits valued at $32,748, more than the nation’s average disposable income of $32,446.”

The end of America as we know it. Woe to the conservative that cuts these benefits to the “poor”. Their party would be massacred in the mid-terms and they would be treated like Scott Walker.

Which is why I think we are doomed no matter what. We can’t cut spending and we can’t keep spending like we are now. Either way, we are screwed.

Yep. Prepare accordingly.

>>The Owner of Pawn Stars is a conservative and Mark Levin fan,

You know, I think the original poster was referring to Hardcore Pawn, and I was as well. His comment would make no sense if it was indeed directed at Pawn Stars.

But my comment was about staging, not political affiliation so I don’t know why you brought that up to me. Pawn Stars, I think, is not staged, but Hardcore Pawn, is.

I think what they’re thinking of is “Hard-Core Pawn”, from my town of Detroit.

it was becoming increasingly obvious that many, if not all, of the encounters were staged. Reality TV, it ain't.

I know, sometimes it's so apparent, when they have very bad actors. Plus the hatred between Seth and Ashley is way over the top. A brother and sister couldn't possibly hate each other so much and work in the same store day in and day out. They have abused that theme to no end.

But it's entertaining when they manage to run one that I haven't seen yet.

I also like "Swamp People", with Troy, Liz and the rest of the gang.

Unless she has nearly 10 kids, the food stamp card doesn’t carry $1,200 /month in credt. And the minute its called in as lost / stolen, its cancelled.

In Virginia it is called a cardinal card and it pays $200/person so a family of 4 gets $800 month.

The other thing is, I was looking through some videos on youtube, and one brought up a very good point. How do these uptight customers get setup with microphone packs? And you can see them clearly on one video.

The same thing can be said of Pawn Stars, but that show looks to me more like re-creation than actual staging and faking. Like when you see the guy come in with the 3 trigger shotgun or whatever, that is the second time. After they interview him, sign him up, get him wired up, etc.

Similar with The First 48. I mean, are there camera crews in the office all day, every day, just waiting for the tip to come in - sometimes weeks or months later? I don’t think so.

I never watched Swamp People, but all those towing company shows - I think they are faked too.

Yes, I am a reality TV freak - about the only kind of TV I watch! The only one I really believe in though, is The Ultimate Fighter, and even there I think they have writers telling the guys who is going to play the prankster, the favorite, the bad boy.

I know the customers are wired for sound and encouraged to play to the cameras, but just once I'd like to see that punk Seth throw somebody out himself - not his two humongous security men, but him. He really talks tough as long as he has his security guys standing between him and the customer.

A four hundred dollar purse, a two hundred dollar wallet, eight hundred dollars in cash - and food stamps?

What’s wrong with this picture?

There is a big underground prescription drug trade and this has been a largely unreported story. Patients on Medicare disablity or Medicaid can claim to have chronic back pain, and their treatment, other than a small co-pay, is covered by Medicaid. Oxycodone, for example, a common potent narcotic, sells for about 75 cents per mg. A common prescription can be 15 mg 4x/day, with a one month supply of #120. So that comes out to 1,350 per month. Go to 30 mg and it doubles. You might have 2 people doing this per household and you could be talking about 30-40k extra cash income per year. This type of fraud would typically go under the radar. These people don’t usually get caught unless they go to multiple pharmacies and multiple providers.

Yep, while over in Biloxi many of us got next to nothing. The only thing I received as a “Katrina victim” was a few months discount on an apartment in a small town south of Dallas and some free ice & water right after the storm. PERIOD. No gas money, no food stamps, no Wal-Mart gift cards, no free hotel rooms for 5 years, no spending money, etc.
