Talk about an ambush.
While Elizabeth Warren, the blue-eyed Cherokee warrior princess, spent all last week struggling to straighten out her thin, and thinning, Native American ancestry, Marisa DeFranco came out of nowhere to ensure that the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate could turn out to be something of a second French and Indian War.
DeFranco is the tough-talking liberal immigration lawyer from Middleton who -- to the surprise of many and the dismay of some -- collected enough voter signatures to get on the September Democratic primary ballot and challenge Warren for the right to take on GOP Sen. Scott Brown in the November election.
Who would have thunk it?
By rights, DeFranco should have gone the way of all the Democrats who boldly announced their candidacies for the Senate, only to wimp out -- or be forced out -- once Warren, the well-financed, elitist Harvard professor, got into the race. Instead, DeFranco is still standing, having become, (pardon me) the last of the Mohicans.
