Posted on 05/08/2012 12:38:54 PM PDT by tcrlaf
If Indiana Senator Dick Lugar loses his Republican primary race to Tea Party challenger Richard Mourdock tonight, as polls indicate is likely, his defeat will signal the end of moderate Republican internationalism in the US Senate and the GOP more broadly.
Lugar, a two time chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee best known for his work on arms control and nonproliferation treaties, used to be one of the GOPs leading figures on foreign policy. Now hes an outlier.
The Senate Republican caucus was once filled with the likes of Dick Lugarsensible realists such as Lincoln Chafee, Chuck Hagel, George Voinovich and Olympia Snowe. Now theyre all gone or going, casualties of a Republican party where diplomacy, multilateralism and bipartisanship are dirty words. (A Mourdock ad called Lugar Obamas favorite Republican.)

I heard he died wearing a tu-tu and a Minnie Mouse mask and that it took 20 minutes to get him down off the chandelier before help could be summoned.
I agree with you. Democrats speak such an odd language.
sensible realists = traitors
RINOs, or as I prefer, SKUNCs — statists knowingly undermining national charters — have been the beneficiaries of the radical left. The more radical the Leftists became the more they seemed a voice of reason. But as the damage from a century of incremental statism becomes more apparent even to a American sheeple, there is simply no way any SKUNC can continue to act like compromise is acceptable and expect to get reelected.
Now watch out for the new forms of GOP-E. They won’t look like Lugar. They’ll only look a little less like Boehner (whose act has worn thin already.) SKUNCs are all internationalists, so watch out for them letting nasty treaties get passed.
Polls closed at 6PM EDT for most of the state; open till 7PM EDT for parts of NW, SW Indiana.

Amen, brother. Yeah, what are they going to do without their favorite chumps, guys they could con with that phony "collegial" crap? Boo frickin' hoo, Bozo! See you in Fist City!
We are a nation with three parties, TEA party, Democratic party (we call them RINOs), and communist party (I call them Bolshecrats).
We have the pinkos whinning! Way to go Tea Party.
When you are a Republian and have the Nation looking at you like a Profile in Courage, you are a real wacko. I wish they would make a list of all their favorite comrades in the GOP.
Mourdock, Richard GOP 91,554 61%
Lugar, Richard (i) GOP 59,035 39%

Any chance Barky and his thugs can call out a bunch of Dims to crossover-vote for Lugar at the last minute?
I think they have Gary and Hammond to work with, and the university pukes in South Bend and Bloomington.
Bob Beckel shed a lot of tears for loss of Lugar in senate on THE FIVE show today...tells you everything!
I'm surprised you didn't correct that erratum. We both know that the library wasn't the "chamber" Rocky was in when he had his fatal heart attack. IIRC, he was going back and forth between two "chambers" when it happened.
Yikes, I better postpone my dinner by another hour!
Hmmm, good one. Why don't you park it over here, and leave the keys in it?
When I die, I want to go out with a smile on my face, like Nelson Rockefeller...not crying, screaming and gasping for breath like Megan Marshack.
Moderate (RINO) Republicans won’t be dead until we finally drive a stake through each of their hearts! Til then they’ll be sucking the life’s blood from the neck’s of the American people with their buddies in the Democrat Party....two vampires on one straw!
LOL I had to look her up. She apparently is still alive and living in New York.
I don't know this race but it would not be good to see a moderate (i.e. RINO) Republican replaced by a real Democrat. Not trying to throw cold water on the party, but I do want to get answers to that question.
Add Eric Canter right along w/him (David Dreyer, CA and many, many others in the House.)
What the author is really lamenting is the passing of the time when his side could be intractable, fervently tribal, and ideologically radical and still manage to con the other side into compromise with the "reward" of an occasional kind word in the media and a certain dagger in the back should a labeled Democrat begin to look electable. What the author means by "moderate" is "sucker".
Was Blue Dog Democrat. 0bama ate me.
Next up - Orrin Hatch.
Down the Hatch !!!
With 88% of the vote in Mourdock leads Lugar 61-39 - which it has been all night - a Rino ass-kickin’.
The polls here in Indiana have had Lugar down 5 to 10 points. How does that happen - the polls weren’t even close ..... ???
I have a feeling we’d all throw up if we knew what perks they REALLY get. It seems they’ll do anything to stay in office. Even when they’re damned close to the grave.
I recall three different stories (location, accompanying persons, activity) were broadcast on the radio within a half hour, before the 'official' version became official.
I had a date that night, and I still remember her looking at me and saying, " Well, that story sure changed, didn't it?"
If you read the entire article, it’s clear the writer is a crack-ingesting oxygen thief.
Elect him the the U.S. Senate.
How about "political pollster" as an anagram for "lyin' MF"? (You have to drop the "g" or it doesn't work. -- ;) )
Someone commented a couple of days ago that the Indianapolis Star, which is usually conservative (so much so that they get scoffed at and abused a lot by JournoListers from "swave, debone-air, cosmopolitan" states like Ohio), was in the tank for Dick Lugar. Guess so, since even their polls lied like a dog on a rug.
Yeah -- they "grow". Like mushrooms, and for the same reason.
That's odd, as Obama also called Lugar his favorite Republican too.
Well, SKUNC is yours free to use. It was the winner in a contest to come up with a suitable replacement for RINO.
The reason for the contest in short: When an elected official in a constitutional republic becomes convinced that he thinks for his constituency, and then he gets to stay in office in large measure due to “rewards” from deep pocket special interests and/or media, and it’s proven time and again that his feeling is correct that he is no longer accountable to the voters, he becomes a Platonic republican (elitist, by dint of getting to rule) rather than a constitutional republican and public servant. So he laughs at our ignorance in calling him a republican in name only.
EV: I think I may have forgotten to alert you to this. It is possible such an acronym provides you something with which to contrast the problem with the whole Republican Party as it has been manipulated. Maybe use it carefully, with a mix of your earnestness and some good humor.
Your idea is not impossible, but unfortunately it is not probable either. As one man without a band of associates, you don’t stand a chance, and you know it. Well, at least not without Divine intervention. The institutions that would allow you to draw such people as would be needed by an truly independent American have all been incrementally infiltrated. It started before the “Progressive” movement and now has advanced to the point where they are no longer hiding their advances. And I know you know that. I may be casting a doubtful note on your efforts, but there are many many more who are still in denial. They call you and I psychotic (imagining things) for telling them even a small bit about the truth of the matter. Heck, even I only have a small glimpse into the problem and would react to much new information that I did not like emotionally (at least at first) because of cognitive dissonance.
You have been trying for a number of years in a political manner. I have been trying by writing out some of my observations and analysis. And we still don’t grok each other much. Why?
At least for me, the nature of my conservativism is very basic: “leave me be!” That will not happen in this world NOW (allowing that it has happened here at least to a great extent in the past) that the American system has been so thoroughly trashed. Critical Theory worked. Tell me one big name institution you believe is above the fray and I will tell you how they’ve knuckled under via those who deceived earlier generations and allowed their ilk (human termites) to gain control of that institution.
