I have family there, and they are left leaners. I love them dearly, but I’m thankful they are still in the minority in North Carolina.

If so, that’s a shame. But I would blame the mainly slime media for misinforming the people for many years now.
To get the Conservative side of the issues, one has actively to seek it, and not just stare at the TV news broadcasts and believe every word.
I had a wake-up call when I was in my early 20’s. I personally witnessed a riot (hey, it’s been over 40 years, and I forget what it was about), and when I looked in the newspaper and on TV for news of it, it was as if it never happened. That was my first taste of the self-censorship of the leftist media with regard to their hiding the unpopularity of their views.
