Doctors call on President Obama to stop eating junk food in public By Elise Viebeck - 05/09/12 08:11 AM ET

A physicians' healthcare advocacy group is preparing to file a petition calling on President Obama to stop eating hamburgers, hot dogs and other unhealthy foods before cameras.

"As role model to millions of Americans, the president has a responsibility to watch what he eats in public," said Susan Levin, nutrition education director with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).

Obama's occasional stops at Washington, D.C.-area burger joints always receive press attention.

He famously treated staff to lunch at Good Stuff Eatery on Capitol Hill in August 2011. A year before that, he and then-Russian president Dmitry Medvedev grabbed food at Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Va.

And in March, during a visit to Ohio with British Prime Minister David Cameron, he ate hot dogs while watching college basketball.

Levin said in a statement that processed meats like hot dogs "kill more Americans every year than tobacco does, and they cost taxpayers billions of dollars in healthcare."

She cited increasing rates of obesity in the United States. A study out this week projects that 42 percent of Americans will be obese by 2030.

"The White House would never set up a photo op showing the president buying cigarettes, so why is it okay to show him eating a hot dog?" she added.

Obama, an ex-smoker, kicked the habit in 2010, the first lady has said.

Despite Obama's taste for unhealthy foods, some media outlets have reported that the president appears to have lost weight since beginning his term.

PCRM's petition asks the White House to issue an executive order barring the president, the first family, the vice president and all members of the Obama cabinet from eating foods in public "that can cause cancer and obesity."

A release noted that eating processed meats was shown in a recent study to increase the risk of premature death.

The group will file the petition on Thursday.

Hamburgers and hot dogs are traditional American foods, not “junk food”!!!!

The food police need to RADICALLY re-think their positions on nearly everything.

There is no way Obama has quit smoking!! People who have quit don’t remain that thin - unless there is another underlying issue. Former smokers don’t necessarily gain lots of weight (although some do), but they do fill out as their taste buds return to normal. Nicotine is an appetite supressant and the appetite returns to normal after quitting as well.

I don’t trust those lying Obamas!

It is rather curious that the title was not:

“...eating processed meats was shown in a recent study to increase the risk of premature death.”

....which just might help solve the problem of Medicare and Social Security going broke. Smoking, too, ought to be encouraged after ObamaCare kicks in.

I have never understood why people call hamburgers junk food.

A hamburger is nearly a complete meal.

Created perception.

It is similar with the greenies denying that oil is a product of nature, whereas vegetable oil is okay and canola oil is even better and peanut oil is better better -- unless you have peanut allergies, of course.

Hamburgers must be bad because too many kids (and adults) like them.

It is the progressives, nanny staters, wanting to run OTHER peoples' lives.

lol

I have often wondered why I was the only person that caught that lie.

If someone keels over from an early death ... they SAVE the system money! but for some reason the government likes to pretend that people living longer somehow COSTS us more money!

um... everyone is going to die eventually... the end of life costs will only go UP over time... and if they live longer they will surely have more opportunities to get sick and hurt over the years. Thus living longer would = greater cost to the system.

We are being lied to from every side.

I like my burgers, too, especially through the garden! My kids like cheeseburgers through the garden, and add ketchup, pickle and mustard, making it almost a complete meal. I do fries in Canola or Olive oil, not as tasty as lard, but the kids like them.

I also like hot dogs, and most lunchmeats. However, I'm not pushing an agenda, and will eat what I like, which is a variety of most foods.

it would look just like a picture of a perfect meal

Perfect requires chocolate, the heavenly vegetable. Make mine a chocolate shake.

Actually if Barry were to turn around and tell ‘em to go pound salt, I would develop just the teeniest modicum of respect for him.

But he won’t.

Isn’t this sweet?

So the meddler-in-chief gets some of his own medicine. His administration is presiding over the ridiculous micro-management of what should be parents’ prerogatives, and now the doctors group is telling him what he can eat.

Poetic justice.

I still think the doctors should STFU.

“Nicotine is an appetite supressant and the appetite returns to normal after quitting as well.”

Hmm, does that mean Nicorette gum or its generic equivalents are an effective weight loss tool?

These arrogant doctors should confine themselves to finding a cure for cancer and defeating Obama next November.

If Obamacare isn't repealed, they'll all become faceless, drone employees on the State payroll. At which time they'll all be reduced to eating canned Bo.....instead of caviar and the dreaded hamburger they're enjoying now.

"Physician, heal thyself." (Luke 4:23)

I don’t think PCRM is a legitimate outfit.

Kinda like if we got some FRiends together
and called ourselves ‘Doctors Expecting Apples
To Heal’ and sent out hourly press releases
to radio and TV fax machines extolling the virtues
of eating apples and the dangers of eating anything
else.

This is a paragraph about their leader -
‘But Barnard was trained as a psychiatrist, not a nutritionist.
His nutritional advice boils down to one
basic message: don’t eat meat, or anything that
comes from animals. PCRM has complained to the
Federal Trade Commission about advertisements that
depict milk as part of a healthy diet. It petitioned
the government to slap meat and poultry with a
“biohazard label,” adding in its newsletter that
eggs should carry these dire warnings as well’.
