Jim mentioned this earlier, but it's worth highlighting Dick Lugar's shrill parting statement. Though he says "I hope my opponent wins in November," it doesn't sound like he means it:
If Mr. Mourdock is elected, I want him to be a good Senator. But that will require him to revise his stated goal of bringing more partisanship to Washington. He and I share many positions, but his embrace of an unrelenting partisan mindset is irreconcilable with my philosophy of governance and my experience of what brings results for Hoosiers in the Senate. In effect, what he has promised in this campaign is reflexive votes for a rejectionist orthodoxy and rigid opposition to the actions and proposals of the other party...[Snip]
This is not conducive to problem solving and governance. And he will find that unless he modifies his approach, he will achieve little as a legislator.

As the liberal journalist Evan McMorris-Santoro quips, he's playing the role of Democratic surrogate.
Apparently Lugar's much-vaunted civility is a courtesy he extends only to his left; turning to his right, he becomes a churl. Good riddance; I'm sure he'll do very well at the high-paying K Street job that likely awaits him.

I read that Sen. Cornyn called to congratuate Mr. Mourdock and that he would get support; I suppose Cornyn means from the RNC. That would be a change. But I am sure Cornyn plans to control Mr. Mourdock by telling him he will not be on any committees unless he goes along with the DC GOP.
It gave me great pleasure to mark my ballot for Mourdock yesterday. I just wish there had been an allowance to write in Sarah Palin’s name for President.
He can still endorse the democrat as a spoiler attack on the tea party. A form of country club tea sipping rebellion.

These guys who have served for years and years and years (Kennedy, Byrd et al) made it a career and our governance has eroded and suffered.
Some people say use the elections as “term limits” and vote the scoudrals out....the hard part is after they serve just one term, they essentially are running for subsequent terms. And, they then have the money to back them more than a challenger usually has.
Also, they have name recognition and unfortunately some people just vote on the candidate they know just because they have heard of them before.
This perfectly describes most Republicans on the hill. Especially McQueeg.
Like in that movie "The Distinguished Gentlemen", where Eddie Murphy's character gets elected because he changed his name to the name of the deceased Congressman who served the district for years.....so he campaigned on the slogan "Vote for Jeff Johnson, the name you know."
You are a moderate, I am for bulldozing the agencies and salting the ground afterwords. Now that sounds pretty moderate to me.

I disagree with you about Cornyn. IMHO he is a straight up conservative who has been somewhat held back up to now by the retiring senior senator from Texas.

Term limits is one way. Taking the perks away is another.
Neither will get past the very people that the perks/unlimited terms go to.
Since we can’t get it passed ourselves, WE have to be the ones to limit their terms.

Peggy has her moments when she can string words together in ways that actually work (and of course she has gotten paid her whole life for doing this) - but much more often she is not a whole lot different than Mo Dowd minus the ocean going freighter’s worth of emotional baggage that Mo carries around.
Each year, the citizenry shoud march every DC pol up in front of a mirror. When its reflection begins to fade, it’s time for it to go.
Perhaps Lugar was once a “reflective” person. I doubt that he is, any longer.

Yes they did. It was certainly considered in the constitutional debates. Soon to be President Jefferson was an advocate of term limits. The founders did not intend for the job to become a career, but they did foresee it and warned against letting it happen. In the end, they left it for voters to decide.
Amending the constitution is certainly withing our perview, just unlikely.
On the other hand if you were a guy and a girl answered that way......

I had little to no opinion of the man until I merely glanced at his statement. There seemed to be so many petty words and phrases that it overwhelmed me to the point of being repulsed by Lugar. Good riddance.
