Mitt Romney’s prep school classmates recall pranks, but also troubling incidents
Washington Post ^ | 05-10-12 | Jason Horowitz

Mitt Romney returned from a three-week spring break in 1965 to resume his studies as a high school senior at the prestigious Cranbrook School. Back on the handsome campus, studded with Tudor brick buildings and manicured fields, he spotted something he thought did not belong at a school where the boys wore ties and carried briefcases. John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.

“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection. Mitt, the teenaged son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, kept complaining about Lauber’s look, Friedemann recalled.

A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.

His residence in Belmont, MA from the late 1960's - 1970's is particularly coincidental. The John Birch Society was (and still is I believe) based in Belmont, MA.

They moved to Grand Chute or Appleton WI (Joseph McCarthy's hometown) in 1989. There's probably not much of them left in Belmont.

FWIW, just found out Robert Welch was a Baptist who became a Unitarian. Probably not much left of Welch in today's UUA either.

What’s up with Matt Drudge posting all this homo crap about Romney? I know Drudge is supposedly homosexual, but he needs to get a grip.

Simply Amazing! In just several weeks, the Rancid Media has uncovered what Romney did one afternoon in high school. Yet, in 4 1/2 years, they have been unable to uncover one single Obama record of anything!

There seemed to have been a picture connected to that story, but the picture was shown to have been photo shopped, just like everything else in the lying fraud's life and profile. Filthy scumbag he is.

So the Obama campaign theme last week was women and this week it’s gays? Nice timing, Washington Post. I have no respect or love of Romney but this is propaganda timed to support Obama’s presidential campaign.

Hmmmmm, so they can actually investigate what romney did back in ‘65 but for some reason they can’t go back to ‘61 to find the mysterious birth certificate, interesting.

One other point that occurs to me — Mittens had to organize a posse to back him up. Even back then, he was too spineless to confront somebody face-to-face like a man.

A followup:
Phillip Maxwell, an attorney in Michigan, confirmed to CBS News that the incident with John Lauber is accurately described in The Washington Post piece. Maxwell was one of the Post's four on-the-record sources. A fifth asked not to be named. Maxwell says the only thing not accurate is that the Post reporter said the incident occurred in a dorm room, but it happened in a common room.

"Mitt was a prankster, there's no doubt about it. This thing with Lauber wasn't a prank. This was, well, as a lawyer, it was an assault. It was an assault and a battery. And I'm sure that John Lauber carried it with him for the rest of his life," Maxwell told CBS News.

A further account:
One former classmate and old friend of Romney’s -- who refused to be identified by name -- said there are "a lot of guys" who went to Cranbrook who have "really negative memories" of Romney’s behavior in the dorms, behavior this classmate describes as "like Lord of the Flies."

Everything we learn about Romney reveals the arrogance of privilege, it is shocking to learn that it could also be so violent, and demeaning.

"Certainly all of us who were involved in it have very distinct memories of it. I would think if you were the perpetrator your memories would be even sharper," Maxwell added.

Unless I'm reading this incorrectly, this guy Maxwell was involved in the incident but somehow thinks his hands are clean but Romney's aren't?
