Michele Bachmann renounces Swiss citizenship

Michele Bachmann no longer wants to be a Swiss miss.

The Minnesota congresswoman asked the Swiss government Thursday to withdraw her citizenship, saying she wanted to make it clear that she was a proud U.S. citizen.

“Today I sent a letter to the Swiss Consulate requesting withdrawal of my dual Swiss citizenship, which was conferred upon me by operation of Swiss law when I married my husband in 1978,” said Bachmann in a statement.

“I took this action because I want to make it perfectly clear: I was born in America and I am a proud American citizen. I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, stepdaughter of an Army veteran and sister of a Navy veteran, I am proud of my allegiance to the greatest nation the world has ever known,” she added.

POLITICO, along with Swiss TV, reported Tuesday she was granted Swiss citizenship on March 19.

I understand why her family did what they did but am amazed that she did not see the “optics” ahead of time. While she might be a very good conservative, she is a lousy candidate. maybe that is a good thing.

Someday, Swiss citizenship could become priceless. I would have never renounced it.

IIRC, Rahm Emanuel had dual citizenship, too.

I don’t recall any outrage about it.

The United States is now the Titanic.

A second passport is your lifeboat.

They missed it because she’s white and they’re all a bunch of racists. /s

I saw a few Santorum and even Romney birthers though.

The problem is the only one I have a shot for is Ireland and they are more boned than we are.

And we are beating up on her why? This would appear to have no bearing on whether she has conservative principals or not. It's not a moral issue. I'm just not seeing why we all care.

...Who needs Democrats when we are so willing to eat one of our own...

Who needs Democrats when our Republican "leaders" back down every time the libs or media say boo.

“The problem is the only one I have a shot for is Ireland and they are more boned than we are.”

You need to contact the Irish embassy in Washington DC and ask for instructions. You can also Google them about the requirements of becoming a citizen (about obtaining a second passport...your lifeboat).

Thin skinnyness is not what I should think FRerpublic is all about, some of these comments do name call: So What! She puts herself out there and says something most, if not all, people don’t care about, and if anyone is out of touch it’s the one being called-out; her and her non-issue. She acts more like Obama with those weird war on this, and war on that, does she really think she is being more patriotic than other dual(ies)? Is she going to say next that: if I had a daughter like the Statue of Liberty, she would look just like me? Wouldn’t put it past most politician, and she is a full blown one. She allows herself to be nibbled on for her lack of forethought.

The lamestream media are going crazy on this one. Saying there should be an investigation of Michele and that she should have her clearances pulled. Talking about allegiances and foreign influences. I say, go ahead. Make our day. Investigate ALL dual citizens in our government.

Amen. But some people just don’t care as long as they are “conservative”.

Just the other day I simply pointed out she wasn’t too bright when she and/or her staff were too stupid to know the difference between Elivs’ birth and death (came right out of her mouth) and I was accused of being an “idiot that probably believed the SNL version of Palin” here on FR.

Even some FReepers seem to be sycophants.

Michelle’s mistake was backing down...nobody ever sticks to their guns anymore...they get a little heat and they wilt.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with her wanting Swiss citizenship.

I like to think that conservatives are largely intelligent and confident enough to admit when their own favorites have said or done something plainly dumb.

After all, we are not utopian socialists; we do not commonly hold others to an impossible standard of perfection nor circle our wagons in defense of indefensible positions expressed by those we would otherwise consider friends. That we sometimes do so would seem to speak more loudly of our correct understanding of human nature than of our personal frailties, of which our understanding admits.

I read that paragraph three times and I’m still not sure it’s written in English.
