Ultra-Orthodox Shun Their Own for Reporting Child Sexual Abuse
The New York Times ^ | May 10th, 2011 | Sharon Otterman

Posted on 05/10/2012 1:38:08 PM PDT by KantianBurke

The first shock came when Mordechai Jungreis learned that his mentally disabled teenage son was being molested in a Jewish ritual bathhouse in Brooklyn. The second came after Mr. Jungreis complained, and the man accused of the abuse was arrested.

Their communities, headed by dynastic leaders called rebbes, strive to preserve their centuries-old customs by resisting the contaminating influences of the outside world. While some ultra-Orthodox rabbis now argue that a child molester should be reported to the police, others strictly adhere to an ancient prohibition against mesirah, the turning in of a Jew to non-Jewish authorities, and consider publicly airing allegations against fellow Jews to be chillul Hashem, a desecration of God’s name.

There is no excuse for covering for child molesters. None. Those that cover up the crime or enable it belong behind bars.

I would have no objection to them handling the matter within their community, provided that they administered the punishment prescribed by the Torah for such a crime.

an ancient prohibition against mesirah, the turning in of a Jew to non-Jewish authorities

I can think of one specific and very famous incident when that rule was ignored.

The problem with that path, as pointed out in the article is sickening detail, is that it isn’t being done.

This is a common practice in groups who feel they are hurt by association with the predominate culture. It comes in all colors (if you know what I mean). Snitches get stitches.

Has the NYet Times ever done a piece about Planned Parenthood covering up child sexual abuse and destroying the DNA evidence in the name of profit?

The criminal act needs to be handled by the proper governmental authorities. Leaving it to the religious traditions opens the door to stoning and beheading by Islamists as an acceptable replacement for due process.

Does your comment mean you have no problem with believers in Sharia being left to deal with their own?

And the relevance of that issue to this one is? Oh wait I get it, we can’t discuss criminal activity unless your issue is too. Great idea! (sarcasm off)

No, not in the least!

I don't advocate my point of view as workable policy. It's just my point of view.

I think this was rhetorical.

Also, Judaism attempts to be a biblical religion. It may get things wrong (and more importantly the law can’t do squat to save a sinful soul), but it’s also not founded on a phony baloney text like the Koran.

And it would be moot anyhow. To stone the adulterer as prescribed in the Old Testament is not possible under secular law, so there’s no excuse not to invoke the more meaningful sanctions of secular law. If they don’t like the secular law then they ought to go to Israel (which as it turns out also does not wink at sexual abuse).

I agree. Those who cover up these crimes should face the same punishment as the culprit. Exile to the sun or antarctica or death.

Report it all. The MSM is only concerned with church molestations.

Planned Parenthood proclaims themselves to be pro-woman when really they are pro-rapist because they do not report all cases of suspected abuse. They instruct the girls to lie about the age of their sexual partner and the circumstance of their pregnancy. They’ve been repeatedly caught on tape giving such instruction.

Just wondering when the media will headline a case of NON-church molestation in an organization.

And yet the MSM wants boys to be exposed to overnight stays with gay scout masters. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

This subject was raised 10 years ago at the height of the Catholic scandal, to demonstrate 1) it happens in other denominations, and 2) that it has no connection to the celibacy of Catholic priests. The fact that it is in the news now is probably to stifle Orthodox Judaism from voicing disgust at Obama’s latest gay nonsense (they’re not into that).
