Senate may try to repeal Defense of Marriage Act

A day after President Barack Obama endorsed gay marriage, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid suggested Thursday that Democrats may move to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, the Clinton-era law that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

Such a move would energize the liberal base and provide a contrast to House Republicans, who passed their own measure this week aimed at bolstering DOMA.

But it could also alienate conservative Democrats in the middle of an election year.

In any case, it would have no chance of getting through a divided Congress.

"If it gets on the floor, we’ll be happy to take a look at it," Reid said Thursday. "It’s an important piece of legislation."

Reid, a Mormon who believes that marriage should be defined as between a man and a woman, said in the wake of the president's remarks that the government should not prohibit same-sex couples from marrying.

On Thursday, he also said he expects the Democratic Party's platform to include a stance supporting gay marriage.

"The president is in favor of it, I’m sure it will be" in the platform, he said.

All the nation's unemployed, those struggling to pay their mortgages & to keep their heads above water appreciate your tireless focus on what really matters, Harry.

You vapid lump of dung.

The Democrats keep trying to resort to wedge issues to no avail. Let them keep ignoring the economy and allow the Tea Party to continue the wave started two years ago.

It’d never pass the House.

All the same, they’re welcome to tick off lots of voters and hand the GOP a sterling silver issue on a golden platter.

Makes me wish the GOP actually had a real candidate this year, instead of the socialist empty-suit we managed to finagle his way into the nomination.

I think that's what;s happening.

One of our nys legislators sided with the Dems on gay marriage and he's not going to run...said that vote did him in...and the party will not support him. Alesi...

I think a lot of Dems want out.

It's like, golly, we know the base of the GOP is pissed off and thinking of sitting on the sidelines, well how can we get them to vote against us?

Lets bring up guns, gays, and God!

Thanks dems.

Wow! This will really help Americans gain full employment, put food on their table, buy a car, get a home, pay for their medical bills, pay for their medications, pay for their electric bill, pay the gas bill, pay for that plane ticket to see a loved one.

actually it would put certain democrat senators on the hot seat if they go for the anti-marriage /pro-homo attack.

Remember the MSM is having orgasms over this. even fnc is exposing how many of their on air and behind the scenes staff are pro-homosexual. (or should that be pro-hedonism)

This may be more of a landslide than anyone would ever predict. The GOP would be stupid to filibuster this. Just vote against it, then after the Dems vote for it, take it to the House and shoot it down. What a great way to get some more Dems in the Senate!
