Americans are fatter than ever, but its not their fault. Thats according to the latest effort to solve an obesity crisis in the only way liberals know how - with more government.
A study released this week from researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Duke University and RTI International found obesity rates to be on course to rise from 34 to 42 percent of the U.S. population by 2030. The number of severely obese - defined as about 100 pounds overweight - will double to 11 percent.
Today, 68 percent of Americans are overweight and half of those are obese. According to the CDC, the average man is 59 tall and weighs 195 pounds. Thats an inch taller but 30 pounds heavier than the average in 1960. The average woman has also grown an inch in 50 years to 54, but she spins the scales 25 pounds heavier at 165 pounds.
A new report from the highly influential Institute of Medicine this week blames society and business for this obesity epidemic. The organization, which was created by the National Academy of Sciences, wants the federal government to insert itself in the private market to force food and beverage companies to provide healthy options at competitive prices everywhere that food is offered. Fast-food and chain restaurants would have to change the childrens menu to comply with federal dietary guidelines without charging more for these options. Sugary sodas would be taxed.
The basic idea is that people cant stop themselves from eating hot dogs at a baseball game or ordering a double-cheese pizza from the couch. Government-centric busybodies want to turn fat people into a class of victims so that Big Brother can come and take control of not just their lives, but everyones food choices.

Eliminating Wheat is a good idea. But also, anything with sugar or high fructose corn syrup.
Is personal responsibility now obsolete?
Are the overweight people tied down and force-fed?
Those fad diets are based on junk science.
The government forced the food pyramid onto the US and look what it got us. Low-fat diets were the nail in the coffin. Look into the shopping cart of obese people... lots of “low-fat” crackers, cookies, etc.
No one needs 6 to 11 servings of grains per day in addition to 7 servings of vegetables and fruits. That is far too many carbs; the American lifestyle does not allow our bodies to metabolize that much carbohydrate in a day.
In Feb.of 2011 I started eating a diet that contained half as many recommended carbs per day and increased my protein intake by about 2 oz. I have lost 60 pounds, and I am still eating a balanced diet that includes wheat.
People have a natural tendency to want to feel good. Eating is a feel good thing.
It’s Un-American to have constant pressure, anxiety, upon us every waking moment of ones life by government fiat.
People eat to excess to feel good, feel better about themselves, feel good to combat the pressure, the anxiety they feel constantly either physically, or mentally that is caused subtly, or not by government.
American citizens don’t even realize they are gaining weight as time goes by, and don’t realize they are doing so as they are under pressures NOT of their own making, but pressures they don’t want put upon them by government nanny staters.
Home, on the job, commuting, every activity is governed, and overgoverned, and folks are anxious. When folks are under pressure, anxious they look for release. They eat. They get fat.

Oddly enough, there are some interesting scientific discoveries out there. Several possible “fat reductions in a pill” chemicals, along with “cleansers” of a sort to eliminate much of the toxic chemicals stored in fat, and perhaps oddest of all, a chemical that improves muscle tone.
While these are all “on the drawing board”, it presents a big opportunity to have some fun at the expense of the gullible nanny-types.
I call it “The Republican Pill”.
You can eat and drink as much as you want of *any* kind of food you want, while remaining slender and improving your muscle tone. With NO side effects.
The idea is to annoy the heck out of these annoying people.
People will no longer need to diet, eat insufficient amounts of bad tasting health food, or exercise, and yet they will be fit and trim and strong.
So go ahead, have that thick beef steak, slathered in butter, mushrooms and onions, with a big pile of salty french fries on the side, and top it off with a triple fudge sundae, with ice cream made from real cream.
And then take a pill. Just one, “Republican Pill”, and feel and look great.
Even the hypothetical existence of such a pill would drive them nuts. Nothing quite like pleasure without pain to make such people seethe.

Answer: Excessive consumption of sugar, bread, and high fructose corn syrup containing products. Along with lack of exercise.
There's lots of evidence that HFCS is worse than sugar. Americans use a lot more HFCS than other nations, including Canada. The reason: corn production is subsidized, and there are trade barriers on sugar. Sugar is a lot cheaper here in Canada, because we don't have special trade barriers to protect the sugar industry (yes, we have a sugar industry). Therefore, food processors use more of it here, than they do in the U.S. For instance, soft drinks in the U.S. are sweetened with HFCS, while the same brands use sugar in Canada.
IOW, government interference in the market has created conditions leading to more obesity. The liberal answer? More government interference. Irony? (No, just more wrinkles.)
Simple solution: Charge people by the pound. Insurance rates based upon body mass index. Same for airlines, buses and taxis. No food stamps for those 10% over. etc.
Low-carb is different than 'eliminating', which is the word you used.

Excessive calorie consuption leads to obesity, which is linked to type II diabetes. The body converts excessive calorie intake, whether they be from carbohydrate, lipids, or protein, into fat. But you're right that excessive carbohydrate consumption combined with a sedentary lifestyle is a main contributer to obesity for most people. I thought you meant people need to eliminate simple carbohydrate, which is what some of those fad diets recommend.
Why would people be fatter now, than in 1960? Hmmmm.
How about jobs and free time spent on computers, games and in front of the TV, the effect of an aging population (Baby Boomers)on the data, and the easy access to prepared food.
I don’t think it’s a mystery. Nor, a terrible thing either.
I wish those who just quote the number of servings would also post what the serving size is. I find for many foods the official serving size is much smaller than most people actually consume. I believe that many of these official charts use a serving size that causes a PB+J sandwich to have two servings of bread.

That’s 30 lbs heavier than I was at 18 but I don’t think I’m fat.

I don’t cut out all carbs. However, cutting out wheat has had a couple of ancillary benefits as well: my usual spring allergies are quite subdued this year (hardly any sneezing), and my hips don’t usually ache anymore when I jog on the treadmill at the gym.
The reason wheat is so obnoxious is because of it’s high glycemic index, meaning that consuming it causes your blood sugar to skyrocket. That promotes secretion of insulin to get rid of that extra sugar by storing it as fat. I suspect my allergy improvement and better jogging performance is due to the removal of the wheat gluten from my diet.
Believe me, I’m not simply promoting this stuff. I’m actually carrying it out on myself, and it seems to be working.

I went to grade school in the early 60s and definitely remember fat kids. Not as many percentage wise as today.
My guess is that you were consuming more carbohydrate than your body needed. What it doesn’t need is stored as fat.
The biggest, fattest slobs I’ve seen recently are SEIU union pigs, ATF oinkers and welfare mommas.

That's good that your diet is working for you. Whole wheat is a good source for fiber, but there are plenty of other sources if whole wheat doesn't work out for you.

Labeling foods "good" or "bad" based on the glycemic index tends to be an oversimplification since the actual glycemic response from one individual to another varies widely for any given food. Insulin will regulate the blood glucose based on what the body needs. The release of insulin doesn't necessarily equate to the storage of fat. Insulin allows the cells to use glucose for fuel and also allows glucose to be stored as glycogen.

I dunno, I stopped eating bread because it is so full of crap. I don’t eat much wheat, mostly rice and corn, except for some wheat tortillas... anyway, I didn’t notice any difference in my weight. Nothing changes my weight.
I’ve lost 35 since January, just eliminating carbs as advised in Wheat Belly.
Try eliminating the rice, tortillas, and processed corn products from your regular diet and see what happens. You also need to carefully check canned soups and other foods to make sure they don’t have wheat flour or wheat gluten in them. They put that sh*t into a lot of things.

Interestingly, the special trade barriers set up to “protect” US sugar producers has pretty much led to the death of the industry in this country. It props the price up far higher than the cane can be grown here for, as price controls always do. Thus, Imperial and the other sugar companies have had to go overseas.

I don’t know about that. People weren’t even aware of the need for exercise in advancing years. In the 60s, my neighbor’s dad started “jogging”, and everyone thought he was a nut, a flake, eccentric.
Yes, there were always fat people. I’m not at all sure that I believe the problem is as bad as the statistics portray - they have played fast and loose with the criteria they go by, just like everything else in this turd world government.
Its not about an awareness of the need to exercise. People just used to be a lot more active.
MSG makes me feel sick as a dog. I had a bad experience with beans and rice last night. Woke up this morning feeling like HELL. Yes, I ate too much of it, but I shouldn’t have felt so terrible waking up. It was beans and rice for God’s sake, not ice cream and hot fudge sauce. Researching a little more, I think it must have been the ranch style beans I used. I don’t usually use them, and I’ve always vaguely disliked them, without knowing why.
Thanks - but it’s getting so hard to find things that are healthy to eat - I don’t know what to switch to. I’ll try though. I’ve sensed for some time that grains and starch are making me sick.
Funny, when I go to the gym, karate practice, or take a bike ride, one of which I do every day, and when I cart my kids to baseball, lacrosse, scouts, karate, etc, etc - I don’t notice very many obese people.
It’s almost like there is some kind of linkage between regular physical activity and fitness.
Ever read the "Little House on the Prairie" books? They ate a very high carb diet. Sometimes all they ate was bread and potatoes with a little salt pork. They were slim, and at times very thin, because food was usually in short supply.
And of course every thing you did back then worked off calories. Want a glass of water? You don't just turn on the tap. You go to the well, lower the bucket down, pull the bucket back up, carry it to the house and then you can have a glass of water.
You want a piece of toast? First you have to chop the wood for the fire and carry it into the house.
A high carb diet is fine as long as you are doing a lot physical work.
Even a few years ago office workers still got a fair amount of exercise just doing your job.
About the only thing of which you can eat all you want and not gain weight is if you eat only very lean meat. Of course you will also starve to death because it does not have all you need to keep going. If you are always moving eat what you like, it will not put weight on you. If you are not then you need to watch your intake.

I never expected that response when I wrote my theory, but I hope you realize how true your statement is.
The Left assaulted the Tobacco Industry from the sixties forward, and now we have obesity, and the Left is assaulting the fast food/restaurant/snack food industry. SHEESH!!! The appropriate target to assault is the Left Wing Industry.
I smoked for fifty years, quit in 2009, and promptly found myself 70lbs. overweight. Still working to unload the fat.
I quit smoking only because of the costs directly responsible to the Leftist’s assault on my smoking, and where those taxes were going.
I actually enjoyed smoking around the ranch as I worked on the many, many projects. One of the pleasures being isolated, and able to not offend anybody with my smoke, but they had to keep messing with it until it was too expensive, and the taxes were going to Leftist programs I of course disagree I want my money to go to, so I quit.
