Facebook Billionaire Gives Up Citizenship to Escape Bad American Tax Policy
Townhall.com ^ | May 12, 2012 | Daniel J. Mitchell

It is very sad that America’s tax system is so onerous that some rich people feel they have no choice but to give up U.S. citizenship in order to protect their family finances.

I’ve written about this issue before, particularly in the context of Obama’s class-warfare policies leading to an increase in the number of Americans “voting with their feet” for places with less punitive tax regimes.

We now have a very high-profile tax expatriate. One of the founders of Facebook is escaping for Singapore. Here are some relevant passages in a Bloomberg article.

yea, because staying in the US and being forced, under threat of violence, to hand over $2 billion would change the US

seriously, wake up.

the only thing these people listen to is money and power. this guy has money, but his money outpaced his power to hold onto it. therefore, he left.

i’m just amazed they ‘recognized’ his renouncing of citizenship. my guess is that they didn’t realize he had significant money until after granting his request.

if the US actually wants to attract the kind of people that made this country great... the first step would be to stop punishing them when they do succeed. until then, internet types have no reason to stay in the US... and many reasons to leave.

We’ve been trying to correct our sordid political system for decades. Has it worked, really? No, the corrupt politicians (which is about 95% of them) screw the voters, tax the hell out of them and then act like they are doing us a favor.

I think Saverin is smart to take his money elsewhere. He would stand to lose appox. 600 million in taxes when Facebook goes public. If our corrupt government got it instead, it would just go down the rathole!

stay and fight? with what? are we picking up guns now?

no.

instead, he’s supposed to stay... and hand over his cash to the progressives so they can buy even more votes? yea, that’s a plan.

paying $2 billion just to stay around and try to convince the drooling masses to not vote for their own destruction is fairly pointless. of course, by saving that $2 billion... he can invest it from overseas into media agencies in the US to undermine the progressives

that would be smarter.

of course, being smarter has nothing to do with your feelings on the subject.

That’s easy to say when you aren’t going to pay millions in income tax, per year.

Let the government pull the plug on your savings accounts, and you have no money to fight with.

Someone so prominent jumping ship is probably one of the best ways to protest this Administration.

What does it say when the new rich (or maybe new extremely rich) are abandoning the USA, rather than hippies that don’t agree with anything good or wholesome?

I hear Ya! A war may turn out to be the only answer for what is being done to our country.

So a person would be better off renouncing his citizenship to the still great country on Earth. And go where: Europe,Asia,The Middle East?
Yeah, sure those places are better....you can own guns and have unlimited freedom of speech and other things we can do.
Oh Wait....those places are out....Speak harshly of gays in some countries and you end up before a peoples tribunal.
Owning guns is out unless you are part of some elite class.
Go where? Tell me where you can go where its better than here? It is better to stand and fight where you are while you still can rather than bug out.
You people sound like the faggy liberals who threaten to leave after Bush was elected. A bunch of whiney crybabies. Waaa...Obama is big and evil...we better run ...waaaa.
People who leave this country are cowards.....afraid to defend what is God given to us....And we are better off without them.
And if you and your ilk would rather bug out rather than stand tough, then bye bye...good luck in what ever land you decide is best. and when that land falls, then hop to another country, then another until there is now place to run with you tails between your legs.
I am done with you.....

LOL

so, what exactly are you doing to ‘defend’ the country against progressives? did you confront them at their occupy rallies? have you arrested them as they stuffed the ballot boxes? have you ‘stood guard’ over the precincts to insure only the ‘right’ people vote?

i doubt it.

so exactly what have you done to stop this?

are you paying billions in taxes? no.

if you were in that position, would you just gladly hand it over and whine about how they are taking your money and handing it to the occu-tards? how does that help?

his leaving the US helps point out the problem FAR more then anything you’ve done to stop the progressives, i’d guarantee it

actually, his leaving the US only impacts the welfare junkies. is that the reason you’re so upset?

Singapore is the city of money. I confess, I don’t know tax rates there, but you can bet it’s better than here, since Singapore has a laser like focus on commerce.

And with billions of bucks on tap, it is pretty easy to have guns, against the law or not.

Freedom of speech may be a problem to some extent, but again, with billions, you can make your points be heard by proxy. And a lot cheaper than paying some more welfare cash into the government coffers.

I can guarantee you that no "feeling" was involved in this decision. I'm sure an entire team of consultants made this decision based on straightforward math.

I work 80 plus hrs, buddy. I have never been on welfare nor unemployment. And I have been working since I got out of the High School in the 80s.
What irks me is people who quit the greatest country on earth.
Sure we have this creature and his minions in the Whitehouse and things look grim.
What have I done? I have been informing people about what is really going on here and not to rely on what the MSM feeds them. I have even converted a few of them to see the light.
I dont advocate violence. I advocate educating people.
But I wont shirk my duty if it comes down to action. Nor would I run[even if I had the means} to another country because I lack the guts to make a stand.
I wouldnt pull a hair if some stupid prick bolts the country. But I aint going to cry and make pouty faces because things aint peachy.
Other than whine here, let me ask you what YOU have done? Or are you sitting with one hand on the computer keyboard and your other hand down your pants?

20% for personal taxes on income earned in Singapore but 0% for capital gains which this would be and virtually no capital gains taxes for foreigners investing in US.

“Left wing anti-American Commie freaks THREATEN to leave when they don’t like the results of an election.”

Where has it said in all these posts that he is a left winger?

He is getting out while he can. The rest of you are going down with the Titanic. Who wins? Not you.

Good for him.

“True Americans would stay and fight than turn tail and run.”

And where are these “True Americans”?

I haven’t seen them for over three years and much, much more.

They have all been too busy whining waiting for someone else to fix the problem.

The rotten cowards are you folks who aren’t lifting a finger to protect the U.S. but brag who many guns and bullets you own. Trust me. You are all too chicken to use them. What a waste of money.

You don’t know that. In fact, you don’t know if he voted at all.

This guy is no different than the Mexican Cowards leaving Mexico...... He is the same.

He is not the same and you're no different then the rest of the brain dead dems who only read newspaper headlines then base your predetermined, bigoted decisions on what you read.

First of all, you know nothing about his politics and given his young age and background, I would suspect that he, as well as his family are staunch conservatives.

Saverin's family moved to Miami in 1993 when he was only 11 years old after his father became wealthy in Brazil and discovered that his children had been placed on "kidnapping" lists by gangs specializing in kidnapping for ransom.

Saverin attended Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, and went on to Harvard University, where he was a member of the Phoenix S.K. Club as well as president of the Harvard Investment Association.

While an undergraduate at Harvard, Saverin took advantage of Brazil's lax insider trading regulations and made $300,000 via strategic investments in the oil industry.[15][14][16] In 2006, Saverin graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in economics.

Considering the fact that Saverin is no longer a member of the Facebook organization, and hasn't been for a number of years and rather now is just a shareholder, was going to be nailed with Capital Gaines Taxes once Facebook went public, he made the right economic move in order to save his own personal wealth from the fingers of the greedy tax-grabbing government that YOU SUDDENLY SUPPORT.........

The only difference between you and Mr. Saverin is the amount of monies you stand to lose in Capital Gains. With that being the case, it's easy for you to pull your own class warfare card........
