Evangelicals: Mitt Romney hit right note
Politico ^ | 5/12/2012 | Ginger Gibson

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Evangelical leaders praised Mitt Romney’s speech today at Liberty University, saying that the Mormon candidate was right to acknowledge his religious differences with other Christian voters.

“It was an acknowledgment that the issues that social conservatives and evangelicals care about are important issues to Gov. Romney and as he sees them [as] part of a successful economic platform for the country,” said Family Research Council President Tony Perkins.

Perkins added that there wasn’t anything the presumptive GOP presidential nominee — who many evangelical voters regarded with skepticism during the primary while backing Rick Santorum — should have done differently. And he pointed to the huge opportunity created for Romney by President Barack Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage this week (Romney opposes gay marriage).

“I think he touched on the key issues that are important to social conservatives. He mentioned Rick Santorum and Rick’s emphasis and the need to have the family and the ties to economic success.” (See also: 10 essential facts about Liberty U.)

Regarding Romney’s acknowledgement that Mormonism differs from other Christian faiths in certain ways, Perkins said the candidate was correct to tackle the issue.

“That was what he needed to do, was to acknowledge that there are theological differences between him and evangelicals,” Perkins said.

God “deputized” all Christians to point out false teaching and guide others away from doctrines that went against his word.

Sadly in modern Oprah Christianity this in not politically correct anymore. All paths are correct. Buddhism is Christianity and so is Islam by the standard you set.

You are more than anti-Romney, you are anti-Mormon. I believe in the First Amendment to the Constitution and the free exercise of religion. Your lack of tolerance is disappointing, especially on a conservative website that believes in freedom and individual liberty.

I just don't understand how Mormon beliefs hurt you or affect you in any way. You can choose to believe whatever you want.

How do authorities measure “distance” in beliefs? At what “distance” do they draw the line of acceptability? Where is the canonical list of Christian core beliefs and the list of distances that each sect of today lies from them? How would they rate, for example, “Assemblies of Yahweh”, or “Kimbanguism”?

Thank you MK. Unfortunately, I just got a FRmail from one hater. I responed to him that instead of wasting his time hating and being arrogant, he needed the Saving Grace of Jesus Christ and should spend his time seeking the Lord out than sending me hate mail on the back channel messages. I’ll pray for his soul as I do all lost. They tell me not to bother, but again, they have no control over whom I pray for. So, I always include them. Prayers up!

Again, I repeat. I know many good Mormon people. They are loving, kind, gentle, sweet, giving, helpful, etc. I served in the Army with one of the finest men I ever knew in the world who was a Mormon. He had me over to dinner with his family. His wife was the perfect host and wife. HOWEVER, their beliefs are wrong according to the Holy Bible. We know that it preaches ONLY through Jesus Christ will we see the Father. ONLY through Him. They deny Him. In fact, I have read where they say the Cross is a waste of time and a folly!! Wrong. Look at their temples. NO CROSSES on those temples. Look closely and you see an emblem that is almost satanic. ONLY by that Cross do we have a saving grace of the power of the atoning blood of the Savior. Denying Him gets you a first class ticket down. Not up. I don’t hate them. I pray for them that they truly see the Light. I have listened to many ex-Mormons tell their stories of how lost they discovered they were in that religion. Belief in Jesus Christ is not a religion. It is a personal walk with the one and only Redeeming Savior of the universe. The Creator God of the universe. Only by Him. Simple as that. Not by a book found by a man lost in the woods at age 14.

From your response I don’t think you are the person I would go to for getting up to speed as to any different societal differences between the people of the Mayflower Compact and the people of the colonies that formed our Constitution. It is haughtily presumptuous for anyone to declare my vote. I have since WWII service earned the right for my private vote.

I too over many years have associated with people of the Mormon faith and as intended to indicate I found them very sociable. I also doubt that I need a Joseph Smith or a Mohammad to be an intermediate between me and my God. Many years ago I was led to Jesus Christ as the light to eternity i.e. God. I also as a personal thing/belief believe that I am comfortable with a feeling Jesus was of God as there is a Holy Spirit of God. With all this said I take Jesus at his words of ‘Render onto Ceaser the things of Ceaser and unto God those things that are of God’. I take it that even Jesus allowed for human societal needs and differences.

Mitt Romney, Bishop and Mormon leader will be carrying the biblical marriage argument for all that make up opposition to the left, traditional America, the bible based “religious right” and all that make up social conservatism and resistance to the homosexual agenda of redefining marriage from the biblical definition of “One Man One Woman”.

Yet he is a member of, a leader in, his family is royalty and original founders of, their own religion that did redefine marriage and discarded the “One Man One Woman” traditional definition of marriage, it was a foundation for the religion that he prominently represents and speaks for, and while bending to the force and power of the US government, they still revert back to that redefinition after death.

Is this yet another area where Mitt Romney representing the American conservative electorate is bizarre beyond words?

Missed his speech so checked out C-SPAN afterwards.

Listened to 3 callers - one R; one D and one I.

All three praised the speech....the D said he hadn't voted for a R since Reagan but now intended to vote for Romney.

Time to put differences aside and support him....and pray for his election and that God will give him the strength to turn the country from the disastrous path it is on today.

You fail to answer the question, so I will ask it more clearly.

How can you deny that a man who publicly accepts Christ is a Christian?

You are not an acceptable authority. No organization is an acceptable authority. Christ himself is the only acceptable authority, and you would do well to not attempt to usurp His authority. See to your own house, and do not try to remove the mote from your neighbor’s eye.

You keep ignoring the post, and putting up straw dogs.

Christian churches all agree, I think the Christian world must collectively know something about Christianity.

I would say that YOU “are not an acceptable authority”, what arrogance you display.

I am not saying anything other than that I cannot judge who is a Christian." Can you?

Christianity is monotheistic. Mormonism is polytheistic.

QED. The only skill needed to judge between 'em is the ability to count past one.

The National Council of Churches disagrees with you.

It most certainly DOES!!!

We Churches of the United States have a message of hope for a fearful time.

Just as the churches responded to the harshness of early 20th Century industrialization with a prophetic “Social Creed” in 1908, so in our era of globalization we offer a vision of a society that shares more and consumes less, seeks compassion over suspicion and equality over domination, and finds security in joined hands rather than massed arms.

Inspired by Isaiah’s vision of a “peaceable kingdom,” we honor the dignity of every person and the intrinsic value of every creature, and pray and work for the day when none “labor in vain or bear children for calamity” (Isaiah 65:23). We do so as disciples of the One who came “that all may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10), and stand in solidarity with Christians and with all who strive for justice around the globe.

In faith, responding to our Creator, we celebrate the full humanity of each woman, man, and child, all created in the divine image as individuals of infinite worth, by working for:

In the love incarnate in Jesus, despite the world’s sufferings and evils, we honor the deep connections within our human family and seek to awaken a new spirit of community, by working for:

In hope sustained by the Holy Spirit, we pledge to be peacemakers in the world and stewards of God’s good creation, by working for:

We—individual Christians and churches—commit ourselves to a culture of peace and freedom that embraces non-violence, nurtures character, treasures the environment, and builds community, rooted in a spirituality of inner growth with outward action. We make this commitment together—as members of Christ’s body, led by the one Spirit—trusting in the God who makes all things new.

There is a great deal that I don’t know about Mormons.

Then you'd best strap yourself in tightly; as it is going to be a WILD ride!

We ANTIs (as we are lovingly called) - the Flying Inmen - will be posting LOTS of stuff from Official MORMON Sources.

MORMONs will moan, cry, wail and complain that it is Out-Of-Context, Not-Scripture, No-Longer-Pertainent or some such.

We will give them PLENTY of rope chances to state THEIR case: use all the MORMON sources they like, to show where we are...

1. Wrong
2. Have lied
3. Come to improper conclusions.

(You may have seen some of this already in this thread.)

“Nonetheless, Romney has been pouring money into the Republican satellite “conservative” organizations since before the last presidential election. Including Perkins’ organizations.”

Can you prove this charge? That is not a light charge to make against such established, credible national organizations.

You should want credit for holding such information, if you do, what with you runnin for potus and all. You could get some real media coverage, maybe even a taste of credibility.

By the way, anything you can see has to be only a tiny tip of a huge iceberg. For example, the $10 million anonymous donation that was given to Karl Rove’s 501c4 late last year.

God only knows who has benefited from the largesse of Romney’s very wealthy supporters like Mark DeMoss and others.

He may or may not allow for those differences. However, He does not allow any other way but Him. It is either Him or down. That simple. People just refuse to believe that. They think when we die, we are just dead and dust. I can only say to them that they had better be right. Immediately upon death, they are going to know for sure if they were correct or not. We are told time and time again in the Scriptures the only way is through Him. And, what the results of that rejection would be.

All one needs to do is read the beginning verses of Matthew and then read Romans Chapter 1 to see the signs of the times. If you read those, you will immediately see that exactly what was predicted in those scriptures are happening right this very minutes on this planet. That shows me that He is alive and that He is soon to return. Those lost, such as Mormons and any others that have rejected His free offer of grace, will be rejected at the Great White Throne of Judgment. I offer these opinions of the scriptures in an attempt to get people to think. Then it is the Holy Spirit's job to convict them. We humans cannot do that. What Mormons and those other non-believers believe are only going to transmit their souls to hell. The scriptures say that, not me. Good day to you and God bless.

I also doubt that I need a Joseph Smith or a Mohammad to be an intermediate between me and my God.

Many (most?) in MORMONism would NEVER make a claim like THAT!!!

"He (Joseph Smith) is the man through whom God has spoken... yet I would not like to call him a savior, though in a certain capacity he was a god to us, and is to the nations of the earth, and will continue to be."
 - Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 8:321

"You call us fools; but the day will be, gentlemen and ladies, whether you belong to this Church or not, when you will prize brother Joseph Smith as the Prophet of the Living God, and look upon him as a god..."
- Herber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses 5:88

"If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by him [Joseph Smith]; if we enter our glory, it will be through the authority he has received. We cannot get around him [Joseph Smith]"
- (as quoted in 1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide, p. 142)

There is "no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God"
- Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p.190

"I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him. We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God; and there are many of them beside him. I tell you, if we get past those who have mingled with us, and know us best, and have a right to know us best, probably we can pass all other sentinels as far as it is necessary, or as far as we may desire. But I tell you, the pinch will be with those that have mingled with us, stood next to us, weighed our spirits, tried us, and proven us: there will be a pinch, in my view, to get past them. The others, perhaps, will say, If brother Joseph is satisfied with you, you may pass. If it is all right with him, it is all right with me. Then if Joseph shall say to a man, or if brother Brigham say to a man, I forgive you your sins, "Whosoever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them;" if you who have suffered and felt the weight of transgression—if you have generosity enough to forgive the sinner, I will forgive him: you cannot have more generosity than I have. I have given you power to forgive sins, and when the Lord gives a gift, he does not take it back again."
 - Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p.154-155

"It is because the Lord called Joseph Smith that salvation is again available to mortal men.... If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation,"
 - Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 396, 670

They succeeded in killing Joseph, but he had finished his work.
He was a servant of God, and gave us the Book of Mormon.
He said the Bible was right in the main, but, through the translators and others, many precious portions were suppressed, and several other portions were wrongly translated; and now his testimony is in force, for he has sealed it with his blood.
As I have frequently told them, no man in this dispensation will enter the courts of heaven, without the approbation of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jun.
Who has made this so?
Have I?
Have this people?
Have the world?
No; but the Lord Jehovah has decreed it.
If I ever pass into the heavenly courts, it will be by the consent of the Prophet Joseph.
If you ever pass through the gates into the Holy City, you will do so upon his certificate that you are worthy to pass.
Can you pass without his inspection?
No; neither can any person in this dispensation, which is the dispensation of the fulness of times.
In this generation, and in all the generations that are to come, everyone will have to undergo the scrutiny of this Prophet.
They say that they killed Joseph, and they will yet come with their hats under their arms and bend to him; but what good will it do them, unless they repent?
They can come in a certain way and find favor, but will they?
 Brigham Young,

--JOURNAL OF DISCOURSES, vol. 8, p. 224

From your response I don’t think you are the person I would go to for getting up to speed as to any different societal differences between the people of the Mayflower Compact and the people of the colonies that formed our Constitution.

Oh?

I merely showed where reference to a GOD was supported by historical facts.

From your response I had assumed (I know...) that you were going to come on to the revisionist 'fact' that this is NOT a 'christian' nation.

I may have misjudged your intentions.

Here is the proof that Romney has been pouring money into the Republican satellite conservative organizations since before the last presidential election.

All of these links are from the last election cycle, 2008.

... it was a foundation for the religion that he prominently represents and speaks for...

Indeed, that marriage idea was a BIG concern for the ones who split off from the fearful bunch that fled to SLC. (Didja ever wonder why THEY weren't SLAUGHTERED!!! by them nasty Missourians?)

Not only WAS a 'foundation' for Utah MORMONism, but it is STILL on the books: their 'holy' scripture!

It would scare the HELL out of me if I were an SLC mormon; after reading what Prophet #2 had to say about it!

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;

and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,

and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.

How can you deny that a man who publicly accepts Christ is a Christian?

Good Question!!

Matthew 24:24

"For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.

Yes; MORMONs worship the christ of the bible all right!

It is obvious to me, that you have very little knowledge of how MORMONism describes 'christ'.

I'm sure by tomorrow (gotta be nice to MOM today) others will be on/in this thread, with quite graphic descriptions that I can only allude to right now.
