Darryl Jones doesn’t have plans to celebrate Mother’s Day. At a time when households are honoring the maternal bonds of the family unit, Jones, the boys basketball coach of city-power Satellite Academy in the Bronx, which has won three of the past five city championships in the PSAL’s Alternative League, has a more pressing matter to deal with.

Jones’ daughter is missing, and hasn’t been seen by her family or heard from since April 27. Stevie Bates, a 19-year-old former cheerleader at the Bronx High School of Science, with an infectious smile and shoulder-length blond dreadlocks, was traveling cross-country with a group of friends she met through the Occupy Wall Street movement when she disappeared.

Oh dear. Pretty 19-yr old girl goes missing while traveling with "friends" she met recently under those circumstances... and missing for over two weeks? The prognosis is not good.

Prayers up for her safe return.

An open, vulnerable, friendly girl who fell in with bad companions. Hope this ends well for her and her family.

But that can’t be! OWS is such a peaceable, gathering of the people! /sarc! I bet she’s not too happy about her new found OWS friends now. I hope she is found, safe & sound!

Not good at all. If she was in touch with her family during her road trip and got on a bus in Pittsburgh for the last leg of her journey back to NYC, then not to be heard from again, it sounds bad, very bad. It’s hard as a parent to even think about, so I will join in praying for Stevie’s safe return.

"...a 19-year-old former cheerleader....with an infectious smile and shoulder-length blond dreadlocks....traveling cross-country with a group of friends she met through the Occupy Wall Street movement when she disappeared."

Sort of answers the whole mystery right there, doesn't it? Poor girl. I hope for her sake that she hasn't already been sold into prostitution slavery.

Daddy had to know that she was attending the Occupy protests. Is he so utterly indoctrinated with leftism that he didn't instinctively understand that maybe that wasn't such a safe place for his little girl to be hanging out unsupervised?

I have traveled by Greyhound couple times in the last few years. All I can say, is there were some very strange people who seemed to be hanging around the bus stations in Las Vegas, NV and SLC, UT.

The Port Authority terminal in NYC where Stevie was headed will never be confused with the Met. I have no problem being there at rush hour or in broad daylight; otherwise, I think not. And from there she was to take a train to Brooklyn?

For a native NYer, Ms. Bates seems incredibly naive. I hope that hasn’t been her undoing. But if she hasn’t made a Mother’s Day call to her mother, with whom she seems to have had a good relationship, I feel very pessimistic. If it were my daughter, I’d be curled up in the fetal position in the corner of the room, literally unable to stand or speak.

They should expand their search a bit - not Pittsburgh or New York. There is a rest stop on that schedule at a place called Sliding Rock, PA. And Philadelphia. Those would be the likely places for her to disappear.

No, actually...I talked to Vivian Bates, the mother. She says she was not supportive of her daughter going to Occupy. (But Stevie Bates is technically an adult, so...not much a parent can do in that case). The mother is very upset & needs help getting info about whether or not her daughter is OK. My own efforts in trying to spread the word are showing me that a select few in OWS are not being very helpful - at all.

Well, I suppose I came from a different kind of family. When I was 19, my parents still held quite a bit of influence over my general (and sometimes specific) direction in life.

In my day, one was considered to be grown at the age of 21.

Sure, I got up to a bit of scurrilous business here and there at 19, but nothing so serious that my life might be at risk. Not intentionally, anyway. Point is, there's no way that I would have lit out across the country with a bunch of radical losers at that age. My parents would have put all kinds of pressure on me to abandon a harebrained idea like that.

I really and truly hope that this girl turns up ok somewhere.
