Tampa, Florida -- Police want your help finding four men who teamed up to beat a young U.S. Army soldier in a South Tampa street.

It was an awful welcome to Tampa Bay for a young soldier. Police say the victim of a violent beating caught on camera is 24 years old and has lived in Tampa for less than a month.

This is where “stand your ground” laws don’t mean sxit because they require one to defend against a threat and an action. If someone asks to borrow a dollar even at 3AM, that is not a threat until he sucker punches you, and then it’s too late. If you pull out a firearm in advance they will charge. Open carry might be a better option, but that might get you shot as an ambush.

When your car breaks down at 3A in a city you’re pretty much screwed. We’ve allowed this country to be turned into a third world nation with our immigration policies. Pat Buchanan is right on this.

That is pretty much how I see it. I drove a bus for my church in the 890’s and 90’s and I saw some of the older kids as wild animals - They’d kill you for a dollar. I apply Ecclesiastes to them. Some are “natural man” only, and very dangerous to both themself and society. Barring a miracle from God, nothing - and I mean NOTHING - good will come from or of them.

Once again, in a situation like this, I would much prefer an appropriate knife, as the closing distance was too narrow for effective, unprepared gun use.

The soldier had bad luck (a car breakdown in a bad neighborhood), at a bad time of day (3am). But there are all sorts of good things in a car that would make great weapons. If nothing else, take the tire iron with you.

He knows no one there, so he has no reason to approach somebody, or for somebody to approach him. Unless he had been drinking, that alone should have been a tip off.

Then he allowed the stranger to close to within punching or kicking distance. If they try, then back step. This sends a strong signal of “back off”, so if they approach you again, they are definitely hostile.

By this time, situationally aware, I would have had my knife in hand, Hwa Rang Do style, with the blade concealed behind my forearm. He throws a punch, I back step then open a large artery in his arm.

A tire iron is even easier, but you know he is stupid if he tries to punch somebody with one in their hand.

He was a soldier who was situationally unaware that he was in a combat zone, and the group ahead of him were probable hostiles.

In such a situation, the best thing to do is to increase distance (slow down and let them get further ahead, or cross the street). If they change course to intercept, then they have confirmed hostile intent, and you should be prepared to draw rather than allow them to come into contact distance, plus "check your six" for additional hostiles.

Minor note: “back to the wall first”, since it limits the hostiles from 360 degrees to first 270 degrees then to 180 degrees. Once you know your back is clear you can go dynamic again. Shouldn’t take long.

Then, if you are armed, if it is a group, a deep doorway is good to further narrow their approach, and limit any large long weapons, like baseball bats.
