How Mitt Romney Will Choose His Running Mate. [1st phase, secret investigation.]

**SNIP**

Far less attention will get paid to the vital, somewhat shadowy, process of protecting Romney from choosing someone who cannot withstand the white-hot scrutiny of a presidential campaign. A longtime Republican insider who’s been a central figure in vetting numerous VP candidates has just written an eye-opening description in the Wall Street Journal of the process Romney is likely to follow.

“They will be asked for their agreement to join him on the GOP ticket if chosen, and in the meantime, to submit to a most intrusive and far-reaching vetting by lawyers and advisors working for the campaign,” writes A.B. Culvahouse, a lawyer in the Washington office of Los Angeles-based O’Melveny & Myers. “No other candidate, not even the presidential nominee himself, is subjected to the same scrutiny.”

“For the ‘vettees,’ the process can appear ad hoc, opaque and at times capricious [and] without precedent in their political experience,” he added.

Already, trusted Romney aides have probably embarked on the first phase: a secret investigation, using “public databases, media archives, political blogs and other sources,” to determine whether a potential pick is qualified for the short list.

Those who make the initial cut must turn over “tax returns, medical histories, financial statements, court records, and anything else labeled ‘private and confidential,’ while also answering the most probing questions about themselves, their spouses, their children and their extended family — questions I would not dream of posing in any other context,” said Culvahouse, who served as White House counsel under President Reagan.

Strange...the requirement of holding a "mormon temple recommend" isn't noted in this article. Glen Beck will be disappointed.

Many of Romney's partners and fellow board members will not make the short list.

I probably won't vote Romney, anyway, but I SURE won' vote for him if he chooses an ineligible running mate like Rubio or Jindal.

Not going to happen.

Besides, Obama has his re-election in the bag. Or should I say, in SPAIN.

And this differs from any other GOP nominee, how?

We've all long known that anyone the Democrats nominate get a complete pass (if they have the right ethnic cachet) or softball questions (if they don't).

Anyone nominated by the GOP will get a rectal exam with a microscope.

Is this supposed to be news?

Don't put all the blame on Spain. There are a whole lot of Americans who are going to try to put Obama in our White House. Quite a few Obama voters are in cemeteries in our own country.

Maybe Romney doesn't think he can find a gay adoptive parent that also holds a mormon temple recommend.

I hope Romney doesn’t choose a Mormon who shares his political views; I can’t stand Harry Reid.

With his connections to the gays in MA, I wouldn't bet on it. They owe him.

Yeah, but Romney made that same promise to someone in almost every state before the local primary. I know that he promised a woman in WA that she was on the short list. He didn’t even have a short list at the time.

Paul Ryan let the cat out of the bag on Hannity the other day that he is one of the ones being vetted.

Anyone nominated by the GOP will get a rectal exam with a microscope.

I guess you missed the part where the investigation is being done by Romney and his "trusted aides".

From the article: “They will be asked for their agreement to join him on the GOP ticket if chosen, and in the meantime, to submit to a most intrusive and far-reaching vetting by lawyers and advisors working for the campaign,” writes A.B. Culvahouse, a lawyer in the Washington office of Los Angeles-based O’Melveny & Myers. “No other candidate, not even the presidential nominee himself, is subjected to the same scrutiny.”

AND...I'll bet the "vettees" will be just a leetle bit reluctant to give all that secret and confidential information to Mitt's "lawyers and advisors"...

Mitt has shown NO reluctance to use the dirtiest tactics against other Republicans, and IF he is elected will have a tidy little pot of of gold to use against any future candidates in the next election...or to hand off to his chosen successor.

I doubt very much I would waste a vote on anyone dumb enough to accept these terms set by Mitt. This ought to give us a read on who is easily hornswoggled and write them off in the future.
