(CNN) -- Vermont's governor has signed a bill making it the first U.S. state to ban fracking, the controversial practice to extract natural gas from the ground.

"This is a big deal," Gov. Peter Shumlin said Wednesday. "This bill will ensure that we do not inject chemicals into groundwater in a desperate pursuit for energy."

How are humans going to multiply without fracking?!

And Vermont has negligible shale gas, so it’s the equivalent of Oklahoma banning whaling.

“Groundwater is not affected by fracking.”

That's a big BRAVO SIERRA!!

When the the rock strata are fractured, there is no way to know with certainty that the aquifer layers will not be violated. Our knowledge and mapping of the subsurface structures is imperfect; with a lot of guesswork involved. Once petroleum seeps into an aquifer, it's gone; forever.

It's just as wrong to fall for industry's lies as it is to parrot the eviro-weenies’ lies!

VT should be bslapped with an energy surcharge for this.

What is so funny about this, is there is no oil or gas or shale gas in Vermont.

In a related development, the State of Texas has passed a law prohibiting anyone from painting any of its native icebergs pink.

OK, show us the proof where an aquifer was damaged by fracing? And it can't be in places like Pennsylvania where oil was found in 1859 at 69’? Crickets. Where do you think all of the oil that is generated in the subsurface by source rocks ends up when it is not entrapped in a conventional reservoir? I'll give you a hint. Since they are less dense than water, they are buoyant and come up to the surface. Here are a few pictures of the phenomenon.

Monumental stupidity is not attractive. Especially when it is compounded with an air of moral superiority and righteous fervor.

I'd prefer not to fall for anybody's lies. I'm busy preparing for a trip but if you like, I'll take you on on the groundwater contamination issue when I get back in early June. I have background in geology, especially groundwater issues, and I've done some careful study of how they relate to current fracking projects.

I don't say groundwater contamination is impossible but it's not anywhere near the problem Enviro Cassandras are trying to make it into. It scares the hell out the uninformed, though, and that's what the Enviros want to do.

Assuming Vermont has anything worth fracking to begin with.

As someone who love the beauty of Vermont, I have to say if someone came up with an engine powered by MARBLE, maybe they (Vermonters) should be worried.

I should say, non-native VERMONTERS, because most of the native Vermonters moved to New Hampshirwe. Most the the people who call themselves Vermonters are people who moved to Vermont from New York City and bought their LIBERAL BS with them.

True story, a few years ago (before I moved to FL), I was vacationing with my wife and kids. I had a Ford Excursion and I pulled into a gas station to buy gas. The owner was mad at my car (he saw my lincense plate from CT), so he thought I was one of these out of state people who buy land for LIBERAL CAUSES, until he saw my BUSH 2000 bumper sticker. He told me that he thought I was an non-native who wants Vermont to be 'PERFECT' for tourists.

Truthfully, if you visit some of the towns like Wilmington and Jacksonville you'll see CONSERVATIVE people. Unfortunatly it is the 'cities' like Burlington, Barre, Brattleboro and Bennington that causes peroblems for the true VERMONTERS.

Then this winter let us allow them TO FREEZE IN THE DARK !

The phenomenon you cite is valid, but you can't DRINK that water!! (At least not a without prohibitively expensive purification process.)

As for proof of aquifer pollution or other damage specifically from fracking: I can't cite any at this time, but that's sort of a lame argument in favor of a risky operation. Sort of like saying: “There's no PROOF that texting while driving leads to auto accidents.”

The odds of contaminating an aquifer are astronomically small. There are at least two strings of steel casing that are cemented in place to prevent this from occurring. There have been over 100,000 wells that have been fraced for about the past 50 years. It is not a modern phenomenon. Fracing is not risky, unless you get your talking points from CNN. Every trial lawyer in the country is looking for the contaminated aquifer that you claim exists. Don't you think you would have heard about the ambulance chasers and their class action lawsuit against Big Oil and Gas? That is their ticket to joining the Great 1%.

“All forms of natural gas and natural gas generated electricity should be cut off from Vermont.”

Absolutely. Let them read with candles, walk or ride horses, and burn cow manure for heating.

I have no use for these idiots.

They elected Bernie Sanders and Patrick Leahy. What more can be said?
