Whether you're a Trekkie or not, you have to admit that there's some sense of wonder toexploring the stars and trying to find life on distant planets. Of course, the U.S.S. Enterprise is a fictional ship, but have you ever put in the thought as to what it would take to actually build it, and when we could get it done if we really put in the effort? The man behind the well-researched site buildtheenterprise.org has, and he's determined that a fully functional Enterprise is only 20 years away if we put in the effort.

That’s a theory. I’ll wait for the reality.

Passively waiting is not what creates the reality.

Within our solar system, on one moon, is enough methane to power this planet forever (three thousand or more years). The key is to be able to mine our solar system. Yes reality bites and bites hard and the technology does not currently exist. At one point, in our nation, the attitude was ... you want the possible ... here it is. You want the impossible ... give us twenty-four hours. The impossible has been delivered over and over and over again by Americans. Am dismayed that attitude has diminished by Americans, during the years, since Apollo.

It could be built.

But it would probably just end up in someone's driveway on cinder blocks.

“We could build it, but it would just sit there. The “whoosh” doors would work, the “life support systems”, lights and comfy chairs on the bridge would all be there.

Communicators, etc.”

That gravity thingy might be a little problem though?

You took the words right out of my mouth. I can’t believe some of the defeatist comments I’ve read. What happened to the “We are Armericans, we can do anything” attitude? We mad it to the moon using the computing power of a wrist watch in the 60’s. Our technology has exploded since then. The attitude I see on this thread is very disapointing.

How about Americans put on Steppin’ Wolf and light up the skies with Magic Carpet Ride. IF our species survives there will be the need to explore and create. Otherwise chalk up the human experience to failure. I remember when failure was not an option. Americans believed they could and they did. Where did that attitude go? We do not the impossible because it is easy, we do the impossible because it is hard.

Gonna need some kind of gravity generator, because the Enterprise definitely had gravity.

For my tax dollars, I’d rather take that trillion every 20 years and invest it - and save up the $852,000,000,000,000,000 for a DEATH STAR.
