A Raleigh County shooting is under investigation after a homeowner allegedly takes the law into their own hands.

At 6 a.m. Monday morning Raleigh County Sheriff's Captain Mitch Barley said a male in his early 20's attempted to break into a home on Haley Hill Drive in Fairdale.

Captain Barley said when the homeowner opened the door the intruder attempted to hit the person with a club and then the homeowner shot the intruder in the chest.

The alleged intruder is currently receiving treatment at Raleigh General Hospital.

Barley said he believes he will recover.

No names have been released at this time.

The case is currently under investigation and no charges have been filed.

Why the "investigation"? I don't see a problem here.

"A Raleigh County shooting is under investigation after a homeowner allegedly takes the law into their own hands."

What an idiotic sentence. As if he was supposed to call the cops and wait for their help as he was being clubbed ?

Shooting some piece of excrement who attack you is hardly taking the law in your own hands, it is exercising your right.

A section of the FL Stand Your Ground Law also protects victims from civil suits. I hope WV has something similar.

My only problem with the event is this:

“The alleged intruder is currently receiving treatment at Raleigh General Hospital.

Barley said he believes he will recover.”

Homeowner apparently did not buy or use a large enough gun.

I don’t understand why the cab driver thought that one was bad.

"Allegedly takes the law into their own hands"?

What kind of BS comment is that supposed to be?

The scene was from the movie “Collateral”. The hired gun, Vincent (Tom Cruise), hires the cabby Max (Jamie Foxx) for $700 cash to drive him around L.A. and make 5 stops to “close some real estate” deals. The cabby quickly realizes after the first stop he has the devil incarnate in his cab and can't get rid of him. Initially whenever Vincent has to leave the cab to “close a deal” he has to tie the cabby's’ hands to the steering wheel with some zip ties to ensure he won't run off. He feels helpless and progressively more nervous as he realizes he will probably be the last victim.

Its a great crime drama directed by Michael Mann and Tom Cruises’ gun handling sequences are excellent.

The devil incarnate would have been an improvement over what Max had in his cab; you often have a chance to bargain with the devil according to the tales. What Max found was that he was driving the Grim Reaper or the Angel of Death himself around - who you can’t bargain or deal with.

1) The idiot "writer" makes it sound as if defending oneself from imminent and immediate danger makes a person a vigilante or something.

2) I like how "a homeowner" (singular) has "their hands". He's every bit as good at grammar as he is reporting facts without bias.

Modern writers (or speakers) have been so conditioned against using the pronoun “he” as a generalization that they can’t use it even when it’s obviously appropriate to the specific case.

And the law backs up the homeowner, so good for “them.”

I wasn't aware of that, but I'd certainly noticed the result. I wasn't sure if everyone had suddenly developed mass mental illness or what. Nobody bothered to run that one past me. The last thing I remember being taught was that "he" was the universal singular pronoun, to be used when one doesn't know the subject's gender or when HE'S hypothetical. They either knew better than to try to reeducate me to the new PC way, or my PC filter screened it out and gave me daydreams of fishing or something until they were done embarrassing themselves.

I think most readers notice when “he or she” is constantly used, or when a subject of unknown sex is sometimes “he” and sometimes “she.” However, only those paying attention to number as well as gender observe the ubiquitous “their.”

Usually it is the ubiquitous “there” or “they’re” used incorrectly.

to, too, two usage always makes me stumble over their meaning as well.
