North Carolina Man Arrested For Trying To Report Suspected Crime
pixiq.com ^ | 17 May , 2012 | Carlos Miller

John Nix pulled out his cell phone after spotting what he thought was a gang of thugs mugging a man in the parking lot of a North Carolina shopping mall last week.

The former city council candidate ended up in jail after the men who were in street clothes turned out to be cops arresting a suspected shoplifter.

They thought he was taking their picture.

According to the Kinston Free Press:

Nix said one man quickly walked up to him, showed a police badge, and asked: “Can I help you?”

He told the officer he could not help him, but wanted to find out what was happening.

The officer told him to “back up.”

“I didn’t even have time to respond,” Nix recalled. “He had me flipped around and in handcuffs, and was going through my pockets.”

He said the officer accused him of trying to use his phone to take pictures of the takedown of the individual, who was a suspected shoplifter.

Nix, who is facing one count of resisting a police officer, said he wasn’t even trying to take pictures, but dial 911.

Not that it should matter.

Looking at the article, this happened in Jacksonville, NC. Since I live in Jacksonville. I looked in my local paper for an article. Nope, nothing about it. I tried to call the paper’s newsroom and found no way to contact anyone. I guess that is why it is called the “fish wrapper.” I’ll call on Monday to see if they have anything. And if not, I’ll ask why not.

THEY claim WE wealth/tax producers have no expectation of privacy in public, how much less do they as tax/wealth destroyers?

If cops are following the law then they should have nothing to fear from a camera.

Ooh, I like it! That statist weaselly mantra actually DOES apply to them.

“They were probably shaking down a druggy and didnt want any pictures.”

OMG!!! That could NEVER happen...no, NEVER!

In the town, a small one, in which I lived we had a police chief, before I moved here, a guy I went to school with, who would pull over in Mexicans he saw and question them. If they didn't speak English well or gave other signs of being illegal he would take all their money and then let them go. Most of them never complained, but finally one of the groups he stopped were NOT illegals and they reported him to the state. I believe he is still serving time.

Not all, probably not most, cops are honest.

PS, I know you were being sarcastic GOP!

As a defense attorney I’m used to using their own tactics against them.
It really pisses them off.
Hehe

It should always be legal to video/audio record public officials in public.

Or on my own property, or on property under my care. Remember, we are dealing with weasels here. Not all of them, but enough to be a problem.

They will only stop them if the town loses a lot of money from violating the rights of citizens. False arrest should be a dang big expensive “mistake” for a jacked up cop to make.

The first question one of them asked was “How many do you have?”
