Texas Poll: Dewhurst 40, Cruz 31
The Weekly Standard ^ | May 21, 2012 | Michael Warren

Posted on 05/21/2012 12:00:07 PM PDT by SwinneySwitch

The Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Texas is now within nine points, according to a new poll. A University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll shows Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst with 40 percent, while his challenger, former state solicitor general Ted Cruz, is at 31 percent. Former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert is in third at 17 percent.

With the the May 29 primary just a week away, Cruz appears to be gaining ground on Dewhurst. He's been aided in his effort to be the conservative alternative to Dewhurst by an endorsement from Sarah Palin, who recently recorded a robocall to Texas voters. "Ted Cruz has defended the Constitution, U.S. sovereignty, and over three million veterans, and he's endorsed by Tea Party Express," Palin says.

Dewhurst, meanwhile, has a new ad featuring Governor Rick Perry, who endorsed his lieutenant last month.

The Dewhurst campaign and its surrogates seem to have recognized the Cruz threat in recent weeks, with both Dewhurst and a pro-Dewhurst super PAC airing ads accusing Cruz of not being a true conservative.

But the momentum may be on Cruz's side, not just in the polls but also in the last-minute money game. The Cruz campaign announced late last week that it raised over $542,000 between April 1 and May 9 and has raised $6.1 million overall. Those are slightly higher numbers than Dewhurst's. While Dewhurst has the backing of the Texas Republican establishment, Cruz has garnered support from national and local Tea Party and conservative movement types.

If no candidate wins a majority of the vote on May 29, the race will go to a runoff on July 31. Many observers believe if Cruz can make it to the runoff, he would have the advantage over Dewhurst.

” I received another of DD’s lying ads in the mail today. He thinks he’s found a way to push conservatives’ emotional buttons (OMG TED CRUZ IS A COMMIE LOVER!), and he’s not about to let up, facts be d**ned.”

This is as low as you can get.

I think Dewhurst and Leppert split the RINO vote and Cruz takes the conservative vote. Dewhurst 35%, Cruz 33%, Leppert 22%. Cruz wins the run-off 52-47.

Craig James takes all 1,034 of the "I'm a self-important stage mom" votes...

You missed the main point of my post: In order to Dump Romney there must be an OPEN Convention.

Ron Paul, Santorum and Newt are our best hopes to achieve an OPEN Convention because they have the most Delegates to force the Romney Delegates to approve of an OPEN Convention.

Since RP is the only active Candidate left standing, he has the best chance of forcing the RNC to have an OPEN Convention in Tampa.

With an OPEN Convention, NONE of the Primary Candidates stand a chance of becoming the Nominee, except Romney.

That possibility must be countered by a stellar Dark Horse, that is someone that has not run in this years Primary Campaign.

Otherwise Romney will follow the same stupid path as McCain and lose to Obama “much to the surprise of the GOP-E.”

Ron Paul, Santorum and Newt were rejected by Primary voters, and would be re-soundly rejected by the voters in the National Election. Thus, their main value is to force an OPEN Convention.

The Convention Delegates then would have a chance to choose a Nominee who could easily defeat Obama.

I had earlier supported R-Sc Sen Jim DeMint, but he will not leave the Senate. Now I support R-Fla. Rep. Allen West. Rep. West is a retired US Army Colonel, straight-talking Conservative, AND is the only non-welcome member of the Congressional Black Caucus, (the Libs hate him).

There are many other Republican non-RINO Dark Horses who would make excellent Dark Horse Nominees.

The DUMP ROMNEY Campaign requires an OPEN or “Bartered” Convention in Tampa.

Make your voice and vote count towards an OPEN Convention in Tampa. Florida!

BTW, Nominee West WOULD be Florida’s favorite son.

Well, Cruz better get something on the air to counter Dewhurst’s attack ads. I swear they are running everywhere throughout the day.

Dewhurst is also very wealthy and is able to pour a lot of his own money into the campaign (millions do far).

I’m all Cruz’ed in via early vote. If your Leg. district is 115 then vote for Matt Rinaldi too — a terrific young gun Tea Party conservative with an A+ rating. Help stock the farm team.

My wife and I early voted for Cruz this weekend. Dewhurst’s TV ads have been relentless. The attack ads make Cruz look like Bill Clinton selling secrets to the Chinese. The other ad, in which Dewhurst says “cutting spending doesn’t take courage. Courage is what my dad (a WW2 veteran) had. We just need to do what’s right”; is a great ad. Dewhurst has name recognition and apparently a lot of money to spend on commercials.

No, it’s a choice between Dewhurst, the proven conservative and Cruz, the unproven guy who has latched onto the skirts of Sarah Palin.

Who is Leppert, some useless RINO? Probably Democrats backing him to sink Cruz.

Cruz is pending tons of money, in fact I’ve been in two different major media markets in Texas on business the last two weeks and I’ve heard more radio and TV attack ads out of Cruz than Dewhurst.

This is not a single lie in any of those ads. In fact, it is you that is being deceptive.
